This looks like it could be where HCRD comes in - they will likely have more info on this incident, all we need to do is find it....

A RL clue from over 100 years ago?? That might be interesting. I heard that CSI:New York will debut next fall. Maybe they'll take the case?

We're dealing with Time Travel here, silly. If there's anything that the Back to the Future Trilogy taught us, it's that anything's possible with time travel.
Incidentally, Broad St. & Wall St. is where the NY Stock Exchange is. That intersection is basically the heart of the Financial world.

The phrasing of that, especialy in the last paragraph, makes me think it's a code of some sort. Anyone get anything to pop out yet?

they shoot horses don't they If Jake is the hero who was almost shot, I don't know that it was better that the horse was hurt instead. Jake isn't physically brave, so if not him, someone else?

Indeed it is, the stock exchange in 1897 was located just down Broad Street from where it is now. (I read all of the book Gotham )

If you have a digital camera, it would be nice to see where all the fuss may have happened...

Maybe more to the special edition Remember the days of typewriters with ribbons? And how a letter would leave a mark on the paper if the ribbon ran out of ink?
Well, I noticed the letter g first, at the end of the line "diamond lapel pin for 20 years". Then more letters on the right lower edge of the article, maybe ucr or iter, and that pattern is repeated further up on the right column.
"when he approached too close to" g
"assailant left many partials" same letters that are at the right bottom edge.
Also "One witness was nearly shot" the letters gc at the extreme right edge.
At the left edge may be a Y in front of "lunch. Mrs. Holman was thrown"
Giving us.... Y gc g ucr?
I can't make anything out of it.
Maybe there are more letters like that?
I wonder, too, if the background pattern might be hiding something.
Can someone please manipulate the gif to remove the text?
Just don't tell me if the background pattern ends up being death on a pale horse.

says Driz. The more I think about it, the more certain I am that this is another of Reggie's puzzles. We were bewildered by this paper, which should indicate to us that we are missing something.
As to the letters without ink, the typewriter (if this was a newspaper article, then it was most likely typeset on a printing press) makes an impression on the paper even if the ribbon is out of ink or running out of ink. The physical pressure of the weight of the letter on the paper would leave a mark.
I am having trouble seeing these letter, is anyone else? And, if the background is death on any color of horse or related to any solstice, equinox, or lunar phase, please break the news gently.

Gladly, I'll blend in with the throngs of tourists it's a hoot to act like a tourist in your own city! I'll post some pics once I get home from work on Monday.
There is a little street right near Broad & Wall Sts. that is very narrow and may have been an alleyway in 1897 (then again, the entire street layout might have been different, I haven't really done my homework). Trouble is, security is ULTRA-tight in that immediate vicinity (like, military-looking types with Kalishnikovs and stuff) so I may not be able to get a good vantage point. I will endeavor.

To me it looks like someone used a tiling texture, then fiddled with it so it wasn't so obvious. The 'g' mark seems to repeat itself at mostly-regular intervals. There could be something in there, though - my eyes are terrible!
