Honestly, I don't think putting up a couple of pictures is making IGN bend over backwards. Even if it was a big deal to put up 4 pictures that have to do with the arg, just think about how many more hits IGN would be getting because of it. It probably went along the lines of bungie: "Hey IGN, wanna help us out by putting up these 4 messed up pictures? We guarantee that not only everyone interested in halo will look at them, they'll look at them over and over as well." IGN: "Hmm... sure, we have to deny we have any connection to you guys right?" Bungie: "yup." end of conversation.

As for the fact that they haven't changed them, it probably means that its actually in game. A site like IGN wouldn't do something shoddy, it would make them look bad, not to mention all the gamers pissed off at the red herring. I'm sure the first time they caught wind of the messed up pictures they would have taken them down and replaced them with normal ones.

I wasn't saying IGN was bending over backwards to post the images. I was saying they wouldn't bend over backwards to change the source code of their web page like people continue to ask to look at.

I know, and I barely use it because I try to stay in game, but it's hard to describe to describe stuff like this without at least giving it a passing mention. The reason that it comes up at such a frequency seems to be the fact that we have a lot of people on the forums who parrot things, and when someone posts about "that" after there's a good long pause, there always seems to be more discussion of it.

To be honest you can spend all day extrapolating possible data from that image. I mean you have what could possibly be a 2 between your IT circle and the W circle.

The thing about the IP address in the comic was it was designed to be an IP address and as such each of the first three numbers had the . after them.

But, overlay over what?

I am thinking if we can combine al of the colered rectangles in a single overlay and lay it over some other jpeg/document, such as the one mentioned with all those numbers identified), and see if the boxes highlight anything.

I am thinking since the boxes appear about the same size (denoting text boxes), their position may be relevant, lto highlight words in some sort of document.

Note sure which document, but the locked pictures may be the primary candidates to try this on first, since the image sizes match. Then maybe try the config/multiplayer datascreens, since there's text. The last items to try would be the starimage and slide ref 070107.

Sorry, I have none of the special tools to extract the boxes, so I hope someone would be able to try this.

I'm just trying to keep this thing moving, looking for the next step.

the only problem with overlaying the boxes over another image, is that the image would need to be the same size or greater than the screen shots.

I overlayed a transparency of the boxes onto all the other screen shots, and nothing leapt out. There are a couple coincidental alignments, but two of the boxes didn't line up with anything.

these rectangles are red blue and green, if someone knows how to make them semi transparent maybe they can be layered on top of each other to reveal what is hidden

thats a great idea. maybe there is something there like use 3-D glasses would make something pop out. idk. but i cant do that on my computer.

It's also VASTLY larger... so maybe there is a detail in the big version that is pointed at by the IGN highlighted version...

EDIT 1: I'll crop out the section highlighted in the smaller version from the bigger version (if that makes sense Razz) and post it here....

EDIT 2:

it look like theres some dark spot or something in the EDIT 1 version on the right side. compare the pics. c 4 urself

What I have to wonder, is if IGN's gallery system altered the images they were given. Assides fron adding the water mark, it may have also resized the images to meet a maximum size. The same images on the bungie site are much larger. Resizing (and probably water marking) would most likely destroy any steg'd message, it would also explain why the rectangles have fuzzy edges rather than clean ones.

The images from IGN are definitely of a lower quality than the clean ones from bungie. Unless there's something stegged into the IGN .jpg's (and I believe everyone who said they looked and found nothing), I don't think there's much we can get out of these pix. The JPEG compression artifacts make the colored rectangles too fuzzy to be able to use them for anything detailed enough to get any data out of them that I'd put any stock in. I'm not aware of any specific images we should be overlaying the colored rectangles, or holes where the colored rectangles were, onto, either.

No, they couldn't find actual content because of the way stegging works. Shadaraman said stegdetect tested all of the images except one positive for JPhide but lacked the tools to password crack.

I seriously doubt IGN would keep up images with these kinds of MASSIVE imperfections without some kind of good reason, especially after having been notified about the situation.
