Butterfly Quote "We are like butterflies who flutter for a day and think it is forever." was said by Carl Sagan, an astronomer and author.
Not sure if this will be relevant, but just in case, here's his wiki:

But I'm not certain how to upload it? Do I have to find someplace to host it first?
Nope! You can do it right here on the boards.
First, download the image to your computer. Then, when you make a post on UF, look at the bottom of the page. There should be a section that says 'Add an Attachment.' Click 'Browse,' find your image, and click OK. Then, click 'Add Attachment.'

So a PDA that speaks to the stars?
Smartphone ?
GPS receiver ?

Once we get all of the butterflies, I'm thinking some layering/photoshop tricks may be called for.
The shapes and sizes are quite different making it hard to do any layering. I am expecting a message written in butterflies instead.
PS: Good to see everyone again

Woo Hoo for Pat & Dave!!! I really hope they're involved in this. Probably just a shared email list, though.

Have put the pics together for now
I played with superimposing them locally, and as someone else mentioned, it doesnt look like they line up obviously.
Since there are 17+, my speculation: its the colour that is significant, not the design. And maybe there will be 24 and there's a reading of that as a clock?

I got a response, very much like the ones already received, except for confirmation that Pat and Dave are the mutual acquaintances. (bold is mine.)

subject difference engine
Dear Drizabella,
Thank you for your correspondence,
I believe we are both acquainted with the illusionists Patrick and David?
I am not of this age and so it takes some time for me to work your new fangled difference engines. -Though in my heart I believe that it is similar calculus that will save me.
You ask how you can help? I think you may need a portable difference engine that can speak to the stars to find me. .. Then we will talk in person.

Illusionists...eh?

I'm hoping for a MeiGeist continuation or something of the same idea.
I received my email yesturday...I replied so I'm just waiting for a reply back.
Maybe the butterflies are symbolic, like the Butterfly Effect (I don't mean the movie). Basically something far away can cause repercussions somewhere else, we see this in natural disasters. E.g. one area gets an underwater earthquake, another gets a tsunami.

Hello you wonderful bunch of peeps; good to see you all again. Looks like Tarim has another chance to misinterpret everything in sight
Tarim's niece, Jaka, has had similar emails to the rest of you from A Plasm (Alternate Landscape MAPS?) - including butterfly number 18. She asked Mr Plasm, when she would need this "difference engine" by and what it needed to do apart from talk to the stars.

Although time is not of essence in this instance. You can begin whenever you like, so long as you know where your portable difference engine is and it knows where you are.
You will need to look through it's windows into another world.
Mr. A Plasm
From the way he wields his apostrophes; we can deduce he was a greengrocer who lived around the mid 19th Century.
Jaka also asked Mr Plasm, "...if you're already dead, what is it
that you need saving from?" But he seemed disinclined to answer that at this stage.
Ah well, now to find someone Tarim can borrow a PDA with GPS from, to lend to his niece for half an hour...

Has anybody checked their butterfly images for interesting exif metadata? It's possible to embed GPS coordinates in the exif headers of a jpg. That could tie in to the whole "speak to the stars" motif.

Note that windows is plural. That implies a PocketPC as oppose to a Palm PDA.
