Microsoft (USA) vs. Google (rest of the world)

Sorry, I'm about to get political here for a minute...

If the US govt wants to understand why it sometimes has an adversarial relationship with the rest of the world, they might do well to read this article, detailing the Microsoft vs. Google wars. It's not much of a stretch to see it as a corollary for the US/world situation.

Anyway, I could go into more detail, but read the article, and I think you'll get the jist of what I'm saying. I was interested in your thoughts.

Two words: Revenue model

Netscape's was flawed because Microsoft was able to get away with making their product a free good.

Google, otoh, gets most of their revenue from advertising and outsourcing their search services to portal sites like Yahoo. Microsoft might be able to make a dent in both, but it would take a flagrant violation of their consent decree to do so.

From Seth Stevenson's Slate Super Bowl ad review column:

Quote:
IBM's little blond Linux kid watches television, alone in his blindingly white holding cell. Clips of Muhammad Ali flash on the screen. And then suddenly the real Muhammad Ali is right there with him, dispensing advice. I've already analyzed these IBM ads, and I think, for what they're trying to accomplish, they do a great job. But here's an interesting irony: This is the 20th anniversary of the Macintosh 1984 ad—perhaps the most famous Super Bowl ad of all time, with the Big Brother guy, the automaton people, and the hammer-throwing lady. (There was speculation Apple might run an ad to mark the occasion, but no dice.) Back then, IBM was the hegemonic enemy ridiculed in the Mac spot. But this time the monolith is Microsoft (which owns Slate), and, lo and behold, it's IBM that hopes to "shake up the world," as Ali intones.
