how many is an "app"? You probably don't want to count us until we've booked the flight, but two of us will also be needing a place to stay in Vancouver. Is it too soon to have a web page for listing arrival times and who is sharing a car from Seattle?

I think it would be good to start something mostly because we can find out who needs to share rides, rooms, etc. and also it might help to know arrival times to share rides and rentals.

BTW, Curtis now says he is going, at least as far as Seattle, he wants to play on some mountain in the US. Don't ask, I don't!

I checked into group rates using the # of people who are listed as attending, but we're app short of the requisite limit for said discount.

If you are talking about hotel rooms, there is no requisite number. They are feeding you a line. I have worked for Holiday Inn and given discounts for groups of 2 rooms. Anyways, if anyone works for any government agencies ask for the governmant rate and bring government ID otherwise ask for a business rate. The gov rate is normally about 40.00CAD for a room that would otherwise cost 150.00CAD.

Any questions about the border need to be brought up to the Canadian border officials, they have a website but I forget what it currently is. You can phone them and ask about what you can bring across or not. (ie no fruit!). Be sure to bring proper ID and secondary government issue ID (ie passport or birth certificate) and anyone under the age 18 has to have passport and parental letter of permission.

While in Canada use credit cards and debit cards the most to maximize the exchange rate that you get. Save all reciepts since you will be able to make a claim against GST to get your money back! (forms available at the border crossing). There is also a certain amount of goods that you can take back duty free after you spend 48 hours in the country so check with the US border officals about amounts and see if you can get the forms ahead of time so that you can fill them out in advance.

Hope all this helps, it is what I used to tell all the Americans that came to our hotels.

I hope that I will be able to come but I have to see if I can get someone to look after my little girl for the weekend.

Melanie

Is this thing still happening? Haven't heard much talk about it lately.

After weeks of intense negotiations, my wife broke down and gave me the green light to go. Or maybe she just wants me out of the house for a few days. I prefer the former.

Anyway I'd be flying into Seattle (thus saving ~$200) and would need to hitch a ride from someone up to Canadia. Don't worry, I won't be carrying *much* contraband.

I'll wait on booking until I hear Yea or Nay from the group.

I realized I have not yet chimed in here. Mostly, that is because I'm still in the "probably" category and will not know for sure for another month or two.

I will likely be driving up there (hey--it's not much different, mileage-wise, than a trip to Vegas from where I used to live), but have never been across the Canadian border and know very little about things up there. Except for the km/h mph difference, driving is pretty much the same, correct? Does anyone know if the cellphone networks are compatible? Do I need to figure out if my GSM phone is dual- or tri-band, then get a temporary SIM card while up there in order to use it? Where does one go to get a passport? I've only been to Mexico, where a California driver's license is sufficient to hop the border. Do we know which hotel yet? I couldn't find it mentioned in the thread.

On second thought, maybe an info and FAQ page might be handy...

Driving is the same, yes.

I had no problem with a network stateside, so I don't see any difference if it's the other way around.

You can either use a passport, or a birth certificate and photo ID.

Nope, we haven't worked out a hotel as of yet. We're waiting for a few more confirmations, so we'll have definite numbers.

As for bagsbee's problem, most of us seem to be flying into Seattle (thus avoiding the evil and costly Canadian airport system) and driving up from there. I'll be arriving in Seattle on the 15th, but I don't know when others are getting in.

I'll be arriving in Seattle on the 15th also. My plane gets in at 11:09 p.m., that would be Seattle time. As far as I know, Curtis is only going as far as Seattle, so I'm still open for sharing a room, suite, etc. and definitely a ride, we probably don't need for everyone to have their own cars.

edited for itinerary change. they changed my departure time.

Since I'll be arriving in Seattle so late, I will probably spend the nite there and leave for Vancouver the next morning.

Yes, The cell phone networks are compatable however, you may be paying international rates when calling the U.S.

I had some trouble with my cellular provider when I visited Niagara Falls. I was physically calling from the US but was connected to the closest cell tower, in Canada and got billed for an international call.

I'm a City boy and I don't drive (yes, I know it's pathetic), but I'd be more than happy to pay my fair share for a car rental. If the logistics of car pooling are too much, I might just fly in to Vancouver directly.

I'd either be arriving the evening of the 15th, or the morning of the 16th.

Also I'm an on-again-off-again smoker (currently on, may be off by then), so I can share a room with a smoker if need be.

Just so you know, the birth certificate (or if you were a naturalized citizen, your naturalization certificate) must be either an original or certified copy. Photocopies are not sufficient. It may be easier just to go ahead and get a passport. And, of course, you need these same documents to return to the US from Canada.

The idea is that you need proof of citizenship and proof of identity, both of which a passport provides. While your driver's license or other photo ID is proof of identity, it is not proof of citizenship, hence the need for an official birth certificate.

NB: these rules apply only to US citizens entering Canada from the US and returning to the US from Canada. (US citizens entering Canada from a third country must have a passport. Citizens of other countries have other requirements.)

Grrr....

Crying or Very sad Dang it! Crying or Very sad I just had to take my cat to the doctor and not for her yearly vacinations (which were two weeks ago). I just spent the cost of airfare to find out she has Asthma. Shocked I love my kitty, and I would move heaven and earth for my pets, but it seems like I was just starting to get ahead again financially. Rolling Eyes

On top of that, from the way my lawyer talks, it will take a crowbar and a case of C4 to get money out of the cab company that hit me, so I think this year I will not be going to Vancouver. Mad Evil or Very Mad

Looks like I will not be going to ARGFest-o-con Vancouver. Mad

Alright, so, it comes time for me to bring up the room mate issue. Now, I'm not 100% sure that I can work this trip yet, but goddess willing, everything will work out. So I'm not asking for a definent yes from anyone yet. I just need to know if anyone would be willing to be my roomie. So I come to you humbly, on bended knees Smile Heh, really though, if I could get anyone willing to talk about it. Please do respond. Thanks.
Megan

Since we're already doing our big vacation in May, I do not think we will be able to make it to Vancouver in July. Sad

Maybe we'll catch y'all at the next one!

I might be attending East West School of Massage in July, so I do not know for sure when it starts. I hope to hell I can still go! And I still gotta find an interpreter friend to go along!

Z, I might be able to be your roomie..

Due to a recent rescheduling, I'll be busy building the set for California Suite in July, with only four weekends available in the theatre. I originally had 6 weeks to build, and I could have taken off one for ARGfest. The shorter time frame now makes that impossible.

So I'll be unable to join y'all in Vancouver, much as I'd like to. Crying or Very sad

Hopefully I'll not have a similar conflict for ARGfest IV.
