I'd give you my KI number, but I can't log in to the dang thing, and I forgot to jot it down last time I was there.

Question: If I play the single player campaign will I lose my progress if I switch to multiplayer? I'm not very far, I've only completed the Desert Age.

No, you won't lose your progress. You can import your player to the live area.

Steve, if you want me to set up the neighborhood, I'll do it. Haven't got a set up live player yet, so I can't give you my KI number yet.

Don't much care about losing progress, I could probably get a majority of it back with my eyes closed, I've done it so many times.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I'll need the exact name of the neighborhood to set it up (if you want me to). Which server? Katran?

I'd hold off for now. AFAIK, the bug also happens when you just switch neighborhoods. Your progress in a certain area (namely having a link to GZ courtyard) seems to remain with your original, it doesn't migrate with you.

Mamma mia, che giorno triste Sad

From Urulive official forum, posted from vanillabean1086:

Found this on another board and then again from CyanBill on this forum....

Uru Live fans and friends,

Thank you so much for your continued support of the worlds that are Myst and Uru. It has truly been wonderful immersing ourselves along with you in the ongoing adventure, following your comments - good and bad - as you explored Uru Live.

I have some good news and some bad news.

First, the bad news...

Uru Live is being put to bed.

Even with all of the time, money, resources, code, people, sweat, and heart that were poured into Uru Live, we needed a certain number of subscribers to pay the bills. We didn't get there. Uru Live is innovative and unique; its online universe is one of the most beautiful and complex ever built, anywhere. The idea of ongoing content was dramatic and forward-looking, but it required a substantial continuing effort to sustain. We were just not able to sign up the number of subscribers (even for free) necessary to pay for that effort.

Now for the good news...

The soul of Uru Live will live larger.

The soul of Uru Live came in two parts: the community and the content. Both will live on. Nothing can kill the community - it has a life of its own. The Call and the Gathering of the community will continue. And the content - what can I say? We have it, large amounts of it, ready to expand the world of Uru. In the past weeks we've been hard at work packaging that content in a different, more inclusive form - expansion packs - the first of which will be available in a month or two. Even better, the first expansion pack, To D'ni, is free. And there's more good news on inclusivity. I'm pleased to officially announce that the Mac version of Uru is finally under way.

It would be easy to focus on the negative aspects of this announcement. But we've grieved our loss, and with clearer minds we see things in a different light. The fact is that the continuing Uru adventure is amazing. The story and places it reaches are spectacular. And in the long run, we want as many people as possible to experience and explore these new worlds. The closing of Uru Live actually gives us the opportunity to open these expanding worlds to a larger audience, including those people without broadband. Only a small portion of the people who played Uru ever made it to D'ni in Uru Live. Now everyone can get to D'ni - and beyond.

Again, perhaps the ending has not yet been written.

Shorah,

Rand and the Cyan Worlds Team

I don't have words... Sad

my day at the Great Zero

with nothing going on at work, i decided to stay home and play more URU Live. I had hoped that it would be a period of less activity on their servers, but it seems I was not the only person with the same idea.

Long story short: I made it to the Great Zero Observation antechamber, upgraded my KI and started the GZM game, looking for markers. I found 15 markers in the cavern, then returned to the antechamber, from which I can now enter the Great Zero Observation room.

Longer report:
It seemed like a miracle that the Ae'gura Ferry Terminal was letting me in. I was coming in as the 34th person in a place with a maximum of 35 visitors. Nimrods, it was sluggish! But I got my first chance to explore new regions, and that is where I found most of the markers for the GZM game.

The rest of the markers were in a neighborhood cavern. I returned to the ARGN 'hood and found it empty at the time, but many new names were on the visitor log listed on the wall: Zadok2, Cesious, alanec, june, Discus, to name a few. I saw carlitoxxi online on my Buddy List and said hello, but didn't get a reply.

I really do want to sit down with someone and learn to play that Heek game sometime this weekend. Will any of you be around?

The Great Zero is soooo coooool looking! I home the future plans for expansion packs include this part. I don't know if I will have the time (and the luck to get online) to fully explore the wonders of this area.

Oh, and the reason I went online in the first place was to see if they had corrected the problem with Teledahn (the mushroom age). I did what I thought needed to be done, and the device sprung to life immediately! I won't know until later whether or not this fixes my offline game.

I did notice that going online failed to remember some of my more recent progress. Maybe offline progress is not automatically uploaded? I just hope that progress returns when I next have the chance to play offline.

I can't say enough about how enjoyable the environment of this game is. The puzzles aren't half bad either, but it's the walking around in strange places that I like the best.

(Have I rambled enough? This is what happens when I don't have a blog to pour my heart into.)

One thing that (surprisingly) makes the lag in the city virtually disappear: disable the sound using the Sound tab at startup (not once you're in the game). I don't know why the sound processing should take up so much power, but it does, and it seems to be what causes the lag.

With the sound turned off you can roam around the city pretty easily.

Yeah, it's a great universe they've created. What a total shame it's all for nothing. Imagine how the folks on the development team feel. Sad

Leftbrained gave me permission to post his KI number here (05246615) for addition to your Buddy lists. He's added "Ormond" and carlitoxxi to his.

And it's not totally "all for nothing", since the content and the virtual environments will be turned into expansion packs. We'll still get to roam the cavern and explore new areas, but we'll each be doing it alone rather than interacting with each other. (See how well i'm rationalizing my grief?)

last expansion pack available

We bought "The Path of the Shell" this weekend, the final expansion pack for Uru. Actually, we bought the "Complete Chronicles" set, to have all of the "To D'ni" expansion on disk (which we had previously only downloaded) as well as the jigsaw puzzles trial game.

It feels so good to return to find new books in my Relto age! I'm afraid all this third-person exploration is going to spoil me for when Myst IV comes out this fall in its traditional first-person mode only. And let me just say that this expansion does have things you haven't seen before!

The only hard part is having to share the good computer with Leftbrained so I can play it.

mood: bliss

So... between 6 to 12 months late, but I have my copy of Uru loaded and ready to play later tonight. I remember all the good things said about it, and it was in the bargain bin, so I went ahead and made the purchase.

Does the UruLive part not exist anymore? Are there still people using KI numbers and such?

The official Uru Live servers went silent long ago. There are, however, servers created by dedicated fans, running what I can only assume is bootlegged or reverse-engineered software. Somewhere on a community message board are links and explanations for getting that up and running, with disclaimers. I have not tried it myself.

You will still have a KI in single-player mode, but naturally without the Buddy Chat capabilities. Enjoy the immersion!

Actually, there are some Ubi-sanctioned servers up and running. You need to download an app for it somewhere. I'll try to find where.

Interesting to hear that some of you here played URULive during the brief time that it was Live.

I received a copy of URU for Christmas in 2003, and spent countless hours solving puzzles, exploring, chatting, and playing around in URULive.

The worlds were strangely beautiful, the puzzles were sinister, and the experience was totally engrossing.

URULive had a lot of potential, but unfortunatly, it was plagued by technical problems, the lack of a coherent storyline, insufficient marketing and, in turn, an insufficient consumer base to build from.

I don't know why, but I recall feeling more than just a little a bit slighted when Cyan/UbiSoft pulled the plug on the servers back in Feb. 2004.

Looking back, I think Cyan deserves a lot of credit for having the vision and the courage to undertake such a unique project as URULive, it was quite an experience, and truly stood apart from the rest of the games on the market.

I can only hope that Cyan can apply some of the lessons learned from URULive towards something bigger, and better in the future. Smile
