Becker's desktop at NRU

grumpyboy again came through and got us the name/pass for NRU. I'll let him describe that later. Here are documents in Becker's files under the heading "projects" that I wanted to make sure we saved. More to come from others, I suppose.

The Human Trial log has lotsa stuff in it...

as i've mentioned in a post in the puzzle thread, the cbecker username/password combo no longer works (it only worked for 1 hour after my first access). Luckily in addition to the files dmax posted already (thanks dmax!), I pulled everything off of there, including emails and notes (though i did not save the emails which were sent by us players - they're on these boards somewhere anyways). So here they are!!! Very Happy

whoa

Wow - the NRU really loves visiting some happy times!

And I never realized that 'hopping' could happen through both space and time - I suppose you could factor in the earth's rotation and orbit and all - it would become necessary...

None of the dates/locations match up with the police reports and article.gif

So has someone been hopping off-the-record? Shocked

News from the newsbot at the left of the screen. In no order, which might be a blunder...

23 dead in Indonesian earthquake

A series of powerful earthquakes measuring up to magnitude 6.9 struck Indonesia's remote Papua province today, killing up to 23 people, injuring as many as 600 and destroying hundreds of houses, authorities said.

The quakes hit hardest in the town of Nabire, damaging the local airport, a bridge, roads and buildings, said Margiono, a seismologist with the Meteorological and Geophysics Agency in the provincial capital, Jayapura.

Margiono said villagers in the area had reported a tsunami, or tidal wave, in the nearby Cendrawasih Bay, but this could not be confirmed.
-
Brampton, Ontario – Hailstorm causes injuries, destroys property.

Local emergency officials have responded to what residents are calling a "freak hailstorm" that has sent at least 10 people to the hospital with minor injuries. Hailstones the size of golf balls are being reported in scattered locations west of Toronto, with the majority seen in areas northwest of the city of Brampton. Hail has shattered car windows, toppled trees, and taken down power lines. Residents are advised to stay indoors and report any downed power lines to Hydro One immediately.

CDC Confirms Powder in Capitol Is Ricin

WASHINGTON (AP)--Unopened mail is being collected throughout the Capitol complex by investigators searching for letters that could be contaminated with the deadly poison ricin--a terrorism-era specter that Congress has learned to dread.

Genetic testing by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided further confirmation Wednesday that the white powder found in an office of Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist on Monday was indeed ricin.
-
Greenwich, England – Royal astronomer observes unusual sunspot activity: unconfirmed

An astronomer based at the Royal Observatory here reported what he called "frightening sun spot activity" yesterday, but his reports are so far unconfirmed by his colleagues or other observatories. Colin Penwith-Meckham is on his second year of his appointment at the Observatory, and his supervisors confide that he is still "a bit green." Penwith-Meckham, however, insists he saw what he saw. "I was on the scope for no more that 10 minutes, when I observed a large black spot creeping over the sun's surface. It looked like the sun was being consumed. I got up from my chair to call over a colleague to observe, but when he looked through the scope, the black spot was gone."
-
Hong Kong - Province in panic as new wave of SARS-like illness sweeps through small village.

Guangdong Province health officials have yet to confirm what one WHO representative is calling "another outbreak of SARS". Chinese military forces have completely surrounded a small coastal village, where it is reported that almost all the inhabitants have come down with the virus. Chinese officials have so far refused to let any relief or outside agencies into the area, and information is hard to come by. The WHO representative, who was not identified, reportedly told his superiors that this was the start of another outbreak and that the Chinese government was attempting to cover it up.
-
Majuro, Marshall Islands – Long dormant volcano erupts: lava boils sea around small atoll.

Local fisherman were the only witnesses to what they say is a dead sea volcano come back to life about 100 miles north of the islands. The atoll—presently un-named—rose from the sea rapidly, and the astonished fishermen were forced to flee the area. They told local officials that the sea was "boiling" around the atoll, and that fish and other sea life had risen to surface, apparently killed in the sudden temperature change. Scientists have been unable to get near the atoll to investigate, as the heat and ash makes the air unhealthy to breathe.
-
Malamapattu, India – Meteor falls into village well, water contaminated

Relief efforts are underway to help a rural village south of Chennai, whose only source of clean drinking water was destroyed by a meteor last week. The unusual case is being investigated by a team of scientists from IIT-Madras. "We don't understand yet what happened to the water," says Sanjay Saraswaram, a chemical engineering expert. "The meteor itself has also not been recovered." Residents reported the meteor fell to earth in the middle of the night, waking them from their beds with an earthshaking explosion. They found their village well completely destroyed from the impact, with smoke rising from the wreckage.
-
Medanos, Argentina – Wildfires rage in Pampas: cattle herds threatened.

Fire crews continue to battle out-of-control wildfires in this region, while cattle ranches scramble to find safe havens for displaced herds. An estimated 1,000,000 head must be relocated, say agricultural officials, but they claim there is little they can do to help. Property losses already exceed $20,000,00, but could go much higher the longer the fires burn. The fires started last week, when lightning ignited a field south of Buenos Aires. Drought conditions have made containment difficult, and the fires have spread to an area of over 1300 square kilometers.
-
Minsk, Belarus – Locust swarm decimates wheat crop

Wheat futures skyrocketed in Asian markets yesterday after Agricultural Minister Yvgeny Plotov confirmed that nearly 25 percent of the small republic's winter wheat crop had been consumed by fast moving locust swarms. Scientists report that swarms are becoming larger and more destructive, and seem to travel farther, making control and elimination difficult if not impossible.
-
Portland, Maine – Red tide threatens local fishing industries

Another outbreak of deadly algae bloom known as "red tide" has shut down shellfish beds all along the coast, from Kittery to Penobscot Bay. In addition to shellfish, this outbreak is affecting local fish populations, and may ground fishing fleets for weeks. National Marine Fisheries Service scientist, Edna May LeBreque, calls it "the worst outbreak in Maine in the past 10 years." Local relief agencies are making appeals to help fill coffers for what they expect to be a record demand for assistance from fisherman, unable to work.
-
Prince Albert, South Africa – Freak windstorm destroys fig crop

Unusually high and gusting winds blew through the small farming village of Karroo yesterday, uprooting trees and causing an estimated 11,000,000 rand in damage. Located just north of Prince Albert, the area is known for its large fig plantations. Local farmer, Ndinge Obabwe, reports that his entire crop was ruined by the unseasonal storm. "The wind blew all the green fruits right off the trees. It is a total loss for us."

I'm hoping that I got them all. For what reason, I dunno.

FYI, after the solve I emailed Jake and CT asking them to show up in chat to discuss the contents of Becker's intranet desktop (I also sent them selected files from the desktop). I suggested Sunday night 10pm mountain time. Neither of them have replied to me yet though.

Oops that last post was me. Two other stories in the newsbot (I'm guessing they will keep adding stories that seem suitably depressing / apocalpytic):
-
UN experts fear global spread of bird flu

The deadly avian flu that has killed 16 people in Asia is moving uncontrolled through the region and could spread elsewhere without aggressive steps to halt it, United Nations agencies warned yesterday.

The appeal for a concerted emergency response to stamp out the lethal H5N1 virus from Asian poultry stocks came jointly from the Food and Agriculture Organisation, the World Health Organisation and the World Animal Health Organisation.

Rail station suicide bomb blast kills 40

MOSCOW: About 40 people died and at least 100 were injured when an explosion tore apart a carriage in the Moscow subway during morning rush hour yesterday, with police saying it was probably a suicide bombing.

Keep the nits, they're yours as a memento.

When I dragged the news articles to my desktop, they automatically get arranged in alphabetical order, and I just posted them one after another - that wasn't necessarily the order in which they appeard in the newsbot.
