Foiling the WHOIS registry I'm about to aquire a few domains for ... some activities of no particular interest at all, and wonder where to get cheap domains with WHOIS information that doesn't point to me personally.
I also wonder how it usually works with domain registrations - do you usually get a webspace as well or do you have to have a server of your own? How is this usually solved?
Any help is appreciated.

Both godaddy.com and net-sol both offer 'anonymous domain registration' now. Godaddy is very cheap, and I heartily recommend them.
Also, with godaddy, (and most others, I think) you have a choice as to whether you'd like them to provide hosting or not. If not, they just put up a 'coming soon' page until you get your own hosting and change the DNS pointers.

Suppose I have a webspace at another provider - can I point the DNS to that space?

Yes, you can host anywhere you want and just have godaddy handle just the domain registration.

Even network solutions has starting to provide protected whois info:
http://www.networksolutions.com/en_US/name-it/
(click on Private Registration)
Many other providers have followed suit.
The service essentially consists of two things :
1-They hide your personal info and substitute for their own (email, physical adress, tel number, etc)
2-They forward any mail/emails as well as calls to the adress/number of your choice (meaning you still must give out the info during the registration process)

Speaking from the Player point of view, that may keep you anonymous, but players learn to watch to see which companies are being used. Doesn't necessarily mean a site is in game, but it certainly becomes one of the marks we look for.
*edit*
Spacely, a spell checker would really be appreciated.

PM's always have the option of ignoring email that violates the integrity of the game. I would think peeking around the curtain like that qualifies.
And, as a PM, if you don't have a way to mask your identity when replying to email... well, 'nuf said there.

I'm told Underscorehosting offers complete anonymity too.

But, sadly, due to an exclusive agreement, they aren't taking any new clients at the moment?
