UPDATE: Meg's blog (Feb. 11, 2004)

Quote:
I'm a mother. It's pretty hard to believe, but it's true. I am definitely not ready for this, but it wasn't my choice. It's true about not getting any sleep. I'm supposed to sleep when the baby does, what a joke. William does not sleep. He sits there and stares at everything. When nobody is paying attention to him, he cries. Perhaps "cries" is too delicate of a word. He roars. He screams. He howls. He strains so hard that he makes a sort of insectile buzzing noise. I think it's probably the worst thing I have ever heard in my life.

Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if I had a little company. Jake's never around, and when he is, he's acting too strange for me even to deal with right now. Not one person bothered to call me, or write, or send flowers, or even e-mail me since the baby came. The only interaction I've had with a grownup since the delivery was with the nurses at the hospital. It consisted of them asking me if I had had a bowel movement yet.

I will talk about the weather. I will talk about the price of tea. I will talk about just about anything but my dreams (still bad) or the nosedive things have taken at Chez Starkey in the past year (even worse). I just don't have one single solitary soul to talk to.

Do they have an e-mail penpal service??

This is pretty much copped directly from Doris Lessing's The Fifth Child, a book about a couple who has a freakishly large, odd-looking infant who matures way too fast and roars all the time. The idea of "roaring" instead of crying especially smacks of the Lessing novel. I don't want to accuse anyone of out-and-out plagiarism, but I mean come on.
