Port 12345 is best known as the default of NetBus, a Trojan developed years ago, that allows a hacker to access data and gain control over some functions on a remote computer system.

More recently, it has been associated with Trend Micro's OfficeScan anti-virus product, which also uses, or listens on, port 12345.

Coming from a System Admin side of things, I wouldn't screw with it until there is something more concrete.

Yea, if you read in my earlier post, i already said i knkow this is traditionally defined as a trojan port... But honestly, having trend micro's officescan anti-virus on a server like this? That is most likely running a variant of *nix... Seems odd... I bet the ftp daemon is vuln...

This could lead to some serious problems; if any experienced hacker gets too far in, and he's not supposed to, and releases, i dunno, lots of pent up secret information, it could ruin the fun for all of us, and get on JJ Abrams bad side. Ruh-Roh.

Sorry, didn't really catch that. I agree that it is a bit odd but not entirely out of place. Some folks just do weird things with servers. I have seen odder.

12345? That's stupid, it's like what some idiot would use as the combination on their luggage!

In the meanwhile, did anyone note that certain bubbles when the cursor is on them only bring up certain animals? Pattern?

Ooooh. Hmm.. looking back, Abrams' denial at AICN of Ethan Haas was Right may have hinted Slusho.
One thing he said was "kick some major ASS".
Something a producer wouldn't normally say. could've been referencing the donkey.

Yes, i have too... But why do this with an arg server? What daemon would possible using this port, and for what service? Seems like either there is ALOT planned for this server, or its just a big honey pot... I'm split both ways atm

Okay...it's a commonly-used thing, I take it?

I'm just struck by the name of a creature that lives quite deep underwater associated with a site whose history involves stuff living quite deep underwater.

Yea, i giggled when i saw that as well... They're running so many different kinds of proxy/NFS/db's that i have no clue what all this mess is for...

But yes that's traditionally what the service is used for, is squid caching proxy service... I tried using it, but to no aval, so i think these ports are just honey pots or possible clues...

A quick correction, which may or may not be significant.

"Flavors" does not give you Fish/Fish. It gives you only Fish - it's the only link that has one animal instead of two. Mousing over it a second time apparently does nothing.

The only pattern I see is that, moving from left to right, each link to the right shares one animal with it's left-most neighbor.

And in all honesty, if I were hosting an ARG site on my own server I should be prepared for folks trying to hack in. And if the site isn't meant to have that happen I need to take the proper steps to prevent it. If I don't, well, I'm not doing my job very well.

But in my own opinion I still wouldn't touch it. Not until there's really something that screams "try this port".

Okay. Let's pay with this for a post or two.

What does the squid normally do. What *can* it do? What purpose does it seem to be serving here?

Well it can stand alot of pressure.
And look at 20,000 leagues under the sea. That was both alive AND huge.

Yea, and running Apache/1.3.33 Server at slusho.jp with a quadrillion ports open and a potential vulnerable FTPD is no way to start... I assumed hacking was just part of the game though?
