[SPEC] AdjutantReflex in Halo 2/ High Charity
Have we met?

I didn't want to create a new topic discussing this amidst all of the voicemail/server02 pandemonium. Now seems like an appropriately slow time, so here it goes:

While snooping around in Halo 2's "High Charity" level, I captured this:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Av67SOKq5Kk

Now, from the books, Covenant constructs are easily defeated and highly unstable. It doesn't seem likely that Cortana would have much trouble getting rid of any of them, because the Covenant are not very good at innovating technology.

What could have happened:

Cortana could have mistaken the construct as Covenant, when it was, in fact Forerunner. The Covenant emulate all of their technology from the Forerunners. It's only natural that they would emulate their AI/CI to run what are essentially Forerunner computers.

AdjutantReflex?

He has stated that he has tried many different options to prevent something catastrophic. I believe he's tried thousands of permutations of how to prevent something (like Hiro in "Heroes") and uses time travel to lay the bread crumbs. Backed up by his quote:

AdjutantReflex wrote:
An older life is here with us. He is not as helpful as I. His motives are oblique and his alliances opaque. He plays with time even as he hides in its folds.

What's he doing on HC?

Trying to:

A) Fight against Truth's launch sequence in order to buy time for the Master Chief.

B) Trying to fight back Cortana's attempts to delay the launch sequence and, therefor, keep the MC from going to Earth and doing something... drastic, OR keep the MC on High Charity to stop Cortana from being absorbed by the Gravemind.

That's my take, what's yours?

I had assumed the intelligence she noted was actually the Gravemind. It had recently crashlanded into High Charity and has no problems taking over logic systems (it appeared to absorb Penitent Tangent, and was messing with the doors there as well.)

If Cortana was talking about an AI I think it would actually be a Covenant one. If you look at the background when she says that, you'll see that Master Chief is surrounded by organic shapes in shades of purple and pink. That's clearly Covenant. Forerunner structures are black and gray, and very angular. Just because this particular AI is more complex doesn't mean anything. Most UNSC AI's are fairly simple constructs, Cortana is just special. This may be the Covenant's special AI, but not a Forerunner AI.

I originally thought it was Gravemind she was encountering but I have come to doubt that. She was with Master Chief when he met Gravemind so would be aware of his existence so I now believe it was something new and a hint at something destined for Halo 3.

Also if Gravemind had managed to infiltrate the Halo's systems he would of been able to do more the prevent the firing sequence from beginning.

I did notice in the E3 Halo 3 trailer that when we see Cortana there is a monitor there as well as Master Chief and the Arbiter. I wonder if thats Guilty Spark.

Unless we have a surprise in store for us, by the time HC rolls around, Adjutant Reflex is dead.

Those are Drones, and the city is High Charity, but the resistant construct comes from the Forerunner ship in the center when Cortana tries to delay the launch sequence.

Yeah, I think it's an R2-D2-like transmission, because when she falls to the table, Guilty Spark tilts with her exactly. Since GS was with the Arbiter and Miranda and Johnson, I'm sure he's with all of them on Earth.

First part: She was inside the MC, and thus never came into direct contact with the Gravemind's--errr--mind. I'd imagine he looks different when he hacks into electronics.

Second: It wasn't the Halo system he was infiltrating, it was High Charity's. Since the Forerunner directly encountered the Gravemind before (according to Server 02), it stands to reason the activation system would be insulated from him in some fashion--remember that even the Monitor can't actually do squat when it comes to activating the Halo, since it can't handle the Index.

Of course it's possible there was another undisclosed AI involved, we don't know for sure. But that's my thinking.

First part: Actually, she was inside High Charity's system and talking to the MC through a com channel.

Second part: It wasn't High Charity's system that she encounters the construct, but inside the Forerunner ship's launch systems.

Unless I'm mistaken she was in his armour when he encountered Gravemind. She didn't leave it until after Gravemind had teleported him to the ceremonial chamber where you fight the brutes. She asks you to take her to the pedestal.

That's a very interesting point. Due to some of the odd time travel in the books I'd suspected that Cortana may have been fighting a covenant copy of herself or a hybrid of a covenant ai and Cortana. I havn't read the books in awhile, but I do remember Cortana infiltrating a computer system and finding a formidable AI within it and then having to copy herself multiple times. This is where the covenant could have gotten her code.

With the light shed on this by your post though, I feel your logic is more correct. As for the intentions of this Forerunner construct I can't really say.

The copies she made were for the MC to use in the repair station mission in First Strike. The Covie AI was in the Flagship that they captured. The repair station was then blown up by the captured Covenant Flagship. So I'm sure none of their code was left.

1. She wasn't out of his suit yet. Remember that the Gravemind-encounter scene takes place right after he kills the Prophet.

2. Yes, the Gravemind would have wanted the Forerunner ship, since it was powering High Charity in the first place and if it left, HC would probably go dark. Gravemind basically always goes for the best ship around, it's how he got to High Charity.

Of course it's possible a Forerunner AI is involved, I'm just carrying my logic through.

I personally think that Bungie already had the story for Halo 3 when they were working on Halo 2. Or at least the groundwork for it.
