my two cents

Almost everything I would have said has been thrown in the ring, but here it is for good measure:

1. The biggest issue for me with online gaming is the difficulty with pacing. The varying levels of commitment to the game make it seem like you're always falling behind in relation to the rest - not the finest mindset for gaming.

2. As for ARGs, I think we should look to Nash's request for help as a real sign of hope for the genre. Forty five individuals offered their expertise (which is no cheap thing, from the work I've seen here), all in a single day - free of charge on a project that has not even been pitched to them. I don't know about other industries, but in New Media that is an overwhelming response!

3. Serendipitously, I have been shopping for an offline adventure game that's much more focussed on the narrative than action - and found the market decidedly lacking. I'm not sure if it's a dot com crash situation. I think instead there's something that's holding narrative games from the spotlight. Perhaps these things happen in waves.

Most of all, I'm glad to see this discussion - it's nice to have some kindred souls thinking through these issues.

However, i don't want absolutely start a polemic, but the players today want pay for violence. Somebody know a mmorpg where you don't have to shot at some human, alien, starship, goblin etc etc?

Tale in the Desert doesn't have any violence (or at least it didn't when I played and I'm unaware of any changes). The whole game was based in Egypt and its technologies. It was interesting and fun for awhile, but I always felt it was sort of missing something. I'm more of a fan of games like Star Wars Galaxies, where you can go out and shoot stuff if you'd like or you can be something simple like an Artisan and just make things all day. Or you can be a combination of both.

ATITD is a lot of fun. I played it for almost a year and a half, through beta and some of release. In fact, strangely one of the old players with me randomly contacted me on this board after I dropped out for several months from that game. Smile Last time I checked with teppy, they were at well more then their break even point. However, the game is running up to the end of its year, I am not sure but it should be ending soon.

Here's a related article at boston.com news, dated today.

FWIW, there's a very well done editorial about the Uru implosion and online gaming challenges in general at Gamers Europe.

Reading that just makes it even sadder that it got closed down - I hadn't realised how much of a community had developed there, it's a real shame they couldn't give it more of a chance to develop. The comment about marketing is spot on, here in the UK I don't think I saw a single ad for the game, and only really found out anything about it reading the thread here. As a fan of the Myst games, I would have thought I'd have heard about it somewhere. Ah well, it wasn't to be. Hopefully someone in the future will be able to make something similar work - I'm sure there's a market for it if it's put together and marketed properly.
