Wouldn't surprise me if they didn't have the foundations for Halo 2 and 3 when they were making 1.

That's a very interesting point. Due to some of the odd time travel in the books I'd suspected that Cortana may have been fighting a covenant copy of herself or a hybrid of a covenant ai and Cortana. I havn't read the books in awhile, but I do remember Cortana infiltrating a computer system and finding a formidable AI within it and then having to copy herself multiple times. This is where the covenant could have gotten her code.

With the light shed on this by your post though, I feel your logic is more correct. As for the intentions of this Forerunner construct I can't really say.

The copies she made were for the MC to use in the repair station mission in First Strike. The Covie AI was in the Flagship that they captured. The repair station was then blown up by the captured Covenant Flagship. So I'm sure none of their code was left.

Ahh thanks for clearing that up for me Rush. I should probably reread the books...at least the ones by Nylund. I didn't really care for Deitz's writing style.

Also if Gravemind had managed to infiltrate the Halo's systems he would of been able to do more the prevent the firing sequence from beginning.

he might have though. He used a teleportation grid (halos?) to transport the MC and Arbiter, as 343 did in Halo: CE, moving Chief around the installation.

Except: 343 couldn't start or stop the Halo firing sequence. So even if the Gravemind obtained all of 343's powers, he wouldn't be able to stop it--he'd only be able to (possibly) turncoat the Sentinels.
