That would make Men sentient, therefore, destroyed.

It should be noted also that the Onyx sentinels called the humans an aboriginal subspecies--not Forerunners or even Reclaimers. Could be relevant, although it seems more related to protocol in the narrative.

Be careful here, to avoid the mistake I made for almost 4 years. I think you are interpreting "sentient" as meaning "sapient". Halo kills all sentient beings of sufficient biomass; this means cows, monkeys, whales, humans, the whole nine yards. If halos killed only sapient lifeforms, then the whole "when did man fully evolve?" argument becomes significant.

To userhck:

Nice analysis. Here are my thoughts:

- Cortana as fused with Gravemind: pretty solid conjecture, as that's what the stuff we've seen so far suggests (in my opinion). The big question might really be when this happens; a funky conclusion including an AI with delusions of grandeur seems reasonable. Smile

- Forerunner as humans - I don't believe this to be true. My primary reasons:
Arrow 2401 PT says that all Forerunner were killed during the firing (H2)
Arrow At no time does a monitor refer to humans as such. Always (and only) reclaimers.
Arrow The Halo3 comic clearly shows a early human watch Forerunner technology, while he himself, is obviously not so advanced.

- Forerunner as another Earth-bound species of human: maybe. I had put forth such a theory at HBO a while ago. This might explain why humans were chosen to be reclaimers; we are the little brothers of a species within the Forerunner conglomerate.

- Flood being present on Earth during history: maybe, but doubtful. Right off the bat, if that were the case, it seems to me that the Flood would have devoured all life. However, if Gravemind, understanding that a continuation of conflict would leave him in a perpetual stalemate state of starvation, might have sent a scout to gather intel. Maybe, but I think you're stretching a bit. Wink

- Although no one knows for certain why the Prophets chose to eliminate humanity, I believe it comes down to the following:
Arrow ONI would not allow the Covenant access to something holy. This comes from Regret on H2.
Arrow Truth knows the Truth, that humanity are Reclaimers (aka Forerunner "chosen people"), and wants to hide this to ensure his power.

I love teh Cortana letters, and want to see the ending merged with these as much as possible, to make the nice "click" at the end. I'm just not how sure literal it's going to be.

Nice read though, and great presentation.

Thanks for the great response. I really appreciate the time you took with that. I was leaning towards the forerunners just being earthbound as well. And to everyone else who responded, thank you as well. It really brought me up to speed with current theories and beliefs.

I'd like the mods to know that this sincerly is not bumping, as I have been gone for a week, and I am merely replying to the great replies in this thread. Thanks again.
