"Let's Go There"

Public beta-testing opened today for a new form of Massively Multi-user Online Entertainment (MMOE) called simply "There." It sounds a lot like the Sims Online, except without the AI. You can create an avatar for yourself to use to explore the virtual world rendered in 3D; interact with other people; and use "Therebucks" to purchase clothes, transportation, and even pets.

An interesting introductory article can be found at ExtremeTech.

Fill out the There.com survey to sign up for the public beta.

Why Join the Beta Test? There is the first online getaway where you have the freedom to play and talk naturally while having fun and making friends. As a Beta tester, you'll be one of the first people to explore and populate There! And, best of all, the There Beta is free!

FYI: Kira Snyder, who was a Majestic puppetmaster (Game Designer and Lead Writer), is on the design team at There. For those of you who played Majestic, you might know her as SugarJonez from the chat rooms. She also posted to the community boards in-character as AnimXgurl.

Kira passed me an invite to early beta testing a while back, under the banner of GroupMango.com, but I was unable to participate having failed the hardware requirements. The interest survey that went along with it was fairly gender biased, and a less couth person might be inclined to write off the endeavour as a "chick thing". That opinion was further hardened by some telecommuting job leads Kira later passed around, including "Online Fashion Activity Coordinators".

Yes, you too can be a virtual cruise director.

However, the ExtremeTech article points out that this marketing focus is intentional: "where women go men will follow".

IMHO, There will turn out to be little more than an updated Palace avatar chat. But as with any community, it ultimately depends on the people who reside in it. I am anxious to hear as unfiction-types report back.

There has potential as a platform for much more than avatar chat, even in our genre. For instance a lightweight ARG could be built around a scavenger hunt, a road rally, or geocaching. Other ARGs might grow out of "How to Host a Murder" type gatherings, with personal avatars acting out archetypes. A full fledged production team might be able script any number of Nouns (people, places, things) to create an immersive and interactive puzzle environment.

And to think, whois would be useless because it would all be on one server... Wink

There is interesting

I've been involved in the public beta for only two days and i must say i'm liking it. The chatting dynamic is interesting and the activities - hoverboards, jetpacks, dune buggies, paintball guns - are fun. The environments are lovely and detailed and there are so many different ways to experience them that even though there's not enough content or people yet, it's still fascinating.

Once they get more variety and improve the UI's intuitiveness and make it a little more customizable, they could a have a very addictive game/social event/thingamajiggy on their hands.
