[OT] Marathon and Halo universe combined?
Traxus might not be an easter egg

So, i giddily skipped out to the mail yesterday to get this months copy of GameInformer. After looking through it, I stopped on page 108 and 109. On the pages were a two page story about Marathon, with half a page on the Marathon and Halo universes possibly combined.

GameInformer printed:
Quote:
Fans have long been trying to make the case that Marathon and Halo take place in the same universe. By Bungie's official timelines, the events of Marathon take place roughly 250 years after the Master Chief's exploits against the Covenant, which is easily enough cushion to explain away the lack of familiar organizations and situations. The Marathon symbol appears on the UNSC ship during the first halo game, thought its far from uncommon for developers to hide subtle nods such as this in their games. The rocket launchers in both games bear the designation "SPNKR", and several plot themes feature prominently in both games. Most incriminatingly, former Bungie head Alex Seropian (Who has since gone on to found Wideload games), once said said that the Master Chief and Marathon's protagonist are one and the same. Seropian had already left Bungie at the time of the quote, however, and Bungie can obviously re-write any story element it pleases. Of course, it does seem odd that it is strongly implied that the player character is a "Mjolnir Mark IV Cyborg" in Marathon - the Chief wear Mjolnir Mark IV, V, and VI armor, and is himself cybernetically enhanced...

Am I stating the obvious here, just thought it might be interesting.
Also it says Durandal plans to dump a few thousand stars into a black hole to prevent the universe from collapsing using "Technology of the long-lost Jjaro race". Could the Jjaro be Forerunners?
Anyways, if you want the whole article just talking about Marathon, youll have to buy the magazine (Gamestop sells it with a subscription)

The similarities between the two games are fan service and nothing more.

I'd have to agree. I doubt Bungie would do something like link Marathon and Halo 3 together, outside of easter eggs.

They weren't lying, the information they gave is correct (afaik, not a big Marathon lore buff). There's just nothing to suggest that the two stories are directly related.

And yes, unless you are trying to prove that the Marathon story is somehow related to Halo 3 and Iris, [Spec] would be the wrong category.

Alright, just thought "By Bungie's official timelines, the events of Marathon take place roughly 250 years after the Master Chief's exploits against the Covenant," meant they were in the same Universe? Correct me if im wrong.
Edit: Also, I didnt mean the stories were combined, I meant they were in the same universe, Marathon being 250 years after. Sorry, didnt say much on that

Well, yeah, you established that fact in the quote you gave above. Halo and Marathon are in the same universe, it's just that their respective stories are not linked.

If you visit marathon.bungie.org, you'll find a timeline, and in that timeline, there's some space for the halo story. Unfortunately, bungie has claimed each story takes place in a separate universe. That doesn't mean life didn't find a way to escape and survive the old, which was destined to colapse.

Well yeah, that's exactly it. Consider too that Durandals ultimate goal was to survive the closing of the universe and in his mind, become a god in the next universe. The end text of Marathon Infinity does imply that Durandal does eventually acheive this and so does the Marine.

Now, I've always found the idea that both storylines could be linked together is an interesting theory, but there is as many inconsistencies between the two storylines as there are clear references. Which makes it difficult to sort out clue from crazy.

Guys, this has been discussed at length before. And Bungie has repeatedly said that the Halo univers is not the Marathon universe. As stated above, any "links," are merely fan service.
