I think the confirmation was in the Halo Graphic Novel, but I'm not 100% sure of that. I am positive that I recently re-discovered it, and said to myself "you know, we should really stop debating whether that was the ark, because it says so right here in official bungie material."

I just checked the Halo Graphic Novel and it does indeed confirm that the Ark is on earth, and it's in or around New Mombassa. Specifically, a covenant elite talks about securing access to the Ark in one of the comics.

Granted, there's not a picture of the E3 trailer in the Halo Graphic Novel, with a big sign saying "this huge structure here is the Ark," but nonetheless I think we can put all speculation about this to bed. The Halo Graphic Novel is canon; it confirms the presence of the Ark in or around New Mombassa, and the E3 trailer shows a massive forerunner structure in or around New Mombassa. It's the Ark.

There's also this picture from the "Making of Halo 2" documentary found on the Special Edition game:

It's from a Bungie development whiteboard, and clearly depicts the Ark. The label is "EARTH_ARK_09".

You see, it may be confirmed that the Covenant BELIEVE the Ark is on the Earth, but that is quite different from the Ark actually being on Earth. I think it is quite possible that the Covenant has mistaken the "ark" as the entrance/teleporter to the actual Ark.

Then how do you explain the huge structure in the announcement trailer? It is certainly not a teleporter, and with the large blue beam it shoots at the end (similar to the Halos), it MUST have greater significance than just an entrance.

What makes you so certain it's not a teleporter?
And I agree, it obviously has a great amount of significance.
The beam convinces me that if it is not a teleporter to the ark, it is a sort of weapon which will hit the moon, unveiling the Ark concealed within.
As for why I'm dragging the moon into this: the lunar cycle has been brought up many times in this ARG, and one of the scenes in Halo 2 shows one of the prophets analyzing a hologram of Earth's moon.

As for the image posted by Jordan117, we know that Bungie has a healthy sense of humor...it is quite possible that the image was labeled that way specifically to capitalize on everyone's assumption that the structure is the Ark. Also, I think labeling it Earth Ark is a bit revealing. Why specify it as an Earth ark? All signs point to there only being one Ark.

To be clear, this image can only be seen for ~2 frames, and its buried deep within a lengthy doc on a limited-edition disc. Sure, they might have planned it for our confusion all along, but I don't think it would be one of their primary goals during crunch time.

It wasn't a caption for the sketch so much as a codename for the level. The underscores and numbers suggest that "EARTH_ARK_09" is the name for some long-lost game-ending Ark map -- it's widely believed that much of Halo 3 is made up of content chopped off the end of H2. I'd say that the rest of the campaign has similar naming schemes, such as EARTH_OUTSKIRTS_02 or HALO_TEMPLE_05.

Kindof a gross violation of Occam's razor here; you're disregarding the simple and obvious (bungie has identified the thing as the Ark on at least 2 occasions identified in this thread) and instead adopting your own "teleporter" theory, which is based on....nothing, so far as I can tell, except for a preoccupation with teleporters.

Emphasis mine

The secureing access doesn't invalidate the other theory. If what's buried under new/old mombassa, is a transportation device to the Ark, then they would need to secure access to this, and from there to the Ark itself.

That said, parts of me agree the Ark is under earth, parts don't. The phrasing in the H:GN are ambiguous enough to mean either.

First, let me lay out my theory clearly.
The Ark is a Forerunner structure, perhaps a Dyson Sphere of some sort, that is hidden within Earth's moon. Concealed beneath New Mombasa is a sort of weapon, which when fired at a time when the moon is aligned properly, shatters the moon, revealing the Ark within.

The basis for this theory (and I admit, a lot of it is conjecture and interpretation):
1. The moon has had a large part to play in this ARG, namely the lunar cycle.
2. In the announcement trailer, we see the "ark" shoot off a beam of light into the sky. This doesn't coincide with the use of the Ark, hence my belief that what we see in that trailer is something different.
3. We know that Halo 3 goes to some location other than Earth. We can see the horizon of a structure in the E3 2007 trailer (the screens I posted earlier), which is reminiscent of the way Halo's curve rises up the sky, giving a similar sense of size, but it is clear from the shape of the structures that it is not a Halo. So we must ask ourselves, what possible thing could Human and Covenant alike be invading from space? This can be easily answered if we assume that the Ark is somewhere in space and not simply on Earth.

I'm not saying I'm right, I'm saying it might not be the best idea to assume that the Ark is the structure we saw in the announcement trailer.

I couldn't agree with you more that the moon will play an important role in Halo 3. The theory that within the moon lies the Ark, however, has been disproven by information obtained from Bungie. The structure near Mombassa and featured in the announcement trailer IS the Ark, but there is certainly room in the story for another important structure to be found in the moon.

Like Onyx, which, coincidentally, also has long flat pieces that come together to box it (the entrance teleporter) up.

I still personally think the planet with the bits sticking out of it is the Prophets home world and not Earth.
