A Volvo ARG?

I wasn't sure where to put this, but here we are...

http://www.news40.vcc.volvocars.se/flash/default.asp

It's a documentary (mockumentary?) about a town in Sweden called Dalarö, where 32 citizens bought the exact same Volvo S40 on the same day. It's sorta funny. Anyway (spoilering in case you wanna check it out yourself):

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Once you exit the Volvo site, a popup appears saying that the documentary is a fake, and has a link to http://www.carlossoto.com/. Apparently, Carlos Soto filmed the documentary, and found discrepancies in the peoples' stories, and believes it to be an elaborately staged hoax. There's an edited version of the video, but not much else, although I haven't rooted through the HTML source very vigorously. I sent him an email, but have yet to receive a response.

It's obviously a marketing ploy, but it's kinda funny because it's a marketing ploy disguised as a hoax intended to be a marketing ploy Smile

very clever

Very clever indeed. By adding the second dimension of the pop-up, I ended up watching the documentary twice really, and examining it in great detail. I'd love to see it go further...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The Dalaro ad campaign was created by MVBMS Fuel Europe, an Amsterdam-based ad agency that has been on contract with Volvo since 2000

Tim Ellis, Global Director of Advertising at Volvo Cars, says: "Even though it comes off as quite serious, the story is actually very playful - once you think you've got it, we offer one more layer to the communication to question that assumption."

Simon Pride, European Account Director at the agency, said: "People are absolutely saturated with advertising these days and we need to find new ways to capture their imagination and get them involved with Volvo. The internet offers great opportunities to tell interesting stories about the brand, and to do so in more innovative and entertaining ways." Their solution - a spoof within a spoof!

I agree it would be very interesting to see this go further. Very Happy
