[SPEC] This game hasn't started

I have reason to believe that this game hasn't officially "started" yet, and will start at ComicCon.

J. J. Abrams has a precedence for doing that:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvVJNYZ5PuQ

That was at a past ComicCon (I'm not sure exactly what year), during a Lost discussion, where the actress that portrays Rachel Blake attacked the producers, in full character, and revealed the website that exposes Hanso Corporation. That launched the third segment of The Lost Experience.

I have reason to believe that, if this is in fact a game, that J. J. will be doing something there. Maybe not anything like that, but something.

He will give us the "key" we need to continue.

I'm sure this has been stated before, but I haven't seen the YouTube video. That was interesting. Smile

I think most people agree that the thing will get rollin' after ComicCon.

I too have been thinking this. However, I have ARG experience to back this hunch up with. I'm learning on the fly here, kind of fun. Smile

Will there be any folks from here attending SDCC to record or transcribe the panel(s) for the rest of us? I'm probably answering my own question, really, because of course there are. I'm just really interested in the key being revealed, is all.

SDCC

I wish I was going, but I found out too late that it's dirt cheap and a short drive away.

Yeah, several us of have said we're going.

I won't be "reporting from the scene" but when I get home that night I'll post my thoughts.

It'd be nice if we could get a video or pictures, but I'm not really sure what's allowed there.

@fishy: Unless they specifically stipulate before the panel that everything discussed cannot be taped or recorded, there's nothing wrong with photos/video of any of the events at ComicCon. SDCC filled up three cards worth of photos last year and it's a damn shame I can't make it this year.

I agree about this. I've been a part of a few other ARGs, including I Love Bees, and have seen their styles and such, and I think this is either a very unorthodox one, a prelude to one (JJ trying to get people interested), or not one at all, just a lower-scale hype device.

2:22 - The original trailer in front of Transformers for Cloverfield / 1-18-08 debuts. JJ Abrams heads to the stage. His very quick statement on the film (as he'll be back for Star Trek XI):

"I want a monster movie, I've wanted one for so long. I was in Japan with my son and all he wanted to do is go to toy stores. And we saw all these Godzilla toys, and I thought, we need our own monster, and not King Kong, King Kong's adorable. I wanted something that was just insane and intense. It's almost done shooting and I watch dailies and I'm more excited for them than the trailer, which has had an overwhelming response. We have 6 months before this comes out. We're going to have a whole bunch of things, a whole bunch more." He said a full trailer, more clips, full posters, and much more will be coming out over the next 6 monts, including the name, which he will NOT reveal today.

"You think we'd call it Monstrous? No…"

So, the film is NOT a Godzilla movie, it is an original monster movie, and it is NOT called Monstrous

any clues there?

Nope. It's not a game. It's a viral marketing campaign, and nothing more. Many of us are willing to sheepishly follow this, hoping that Abrams will turn this into The Monstrous Experience; however I will not. I can't be satisfied with 1 blurry irrelevant photo a week; or a website trying to sell a product that doesn't exist but really isn't even selling anything or even fully completed yet; or a trailer that has so many nuances to overanalyze there's no way to sort the wheat from the chaff; or a teaser poster that tells us nothing that we don't already know except for a title that's not the title, pointing to a web address with no site, which is replaced by another teaser poster without the title. There's no way there's an ARG in this mess. And if there is, it's so poorly designed that nobody could follow it to completion. And the fact that Abrams doesn't even have a clue for us tells us there's no clues to be given.

Abrams said he's a big fan of Star Wars - you know, the big franchise that made George Lucas rich becuase he kept merchandising rights (May the Shwartz be with you!), and said that it's because of the toy store in Japan filled with all sorts of giant monster promotional merchandise that made him think that America needs a giant monster movie of its own. In Japan, there are production studios that specifically produce movies and television series for the sole purpose of selling merchandise, action figures and such based off of the movie or series. This is just Abrams' version of this. However, to not try to pass it off as just another giant monster movie, he needs both a unique monster, and a unique method of promotion, which is this nonsense we're caught up in.

I'm out.

Possibly, but if that's the case what's the point of making an elaborate Flash site for Slusho?

The slusho logo was trademarked, which is significant because this is unnecessary merely to protect a copyrighted image. It's only done to prevent someone else's products from ones you sell or intend to sell. There's nothing wrong with merchandising, so I assume there will be "official" slusho products for sale. This by itself doesn't mean there isn't or won't be an ARG related to slusho, however.
