Finally managed to find a computer that could update.

Been running around everywhere -- the library wasn't a bust but I'm starting to really wonder about what's been happening "ahead" of me.

The librarian said that Tricia asked her to give a picture to someone who was following behind.

It was smooth, when I got it, and it's
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb140/searchin4/savannah.jpg
Nothing really special about it, so I'm not really sure where it's going.

But when I went to upload it I found the title of my images changed.

The actual picture of Trish was called "sbyybj gu" and the altered one "r genvy".
I'm guessing it's another one of those ciphers you guys seem to be good at breaking so... I'll leave it to you.

I mentioned the odd picture issue to someone at the library and they suggested that there could be something "in" or "behind" the picture. I didn't really get what they were talking about -- but it seemed like it'd be worth a shot.

Jane didn't know anything about it, so I guess it's just not her forte. I'm starting to get a little antsy here -- there's not much in Harlan and I'm losing my "lead"... I guess.

I almost don't want to mention this -- I feel like I'm being paranoid or something -- but it was strange. When I got to the library there were some people there that just looked... off. One of them wasn't even reading or anything, just staring at people as they went in and out. A taller guy was there with him, reading a paper I think.

When I pulled out the picture to show the librarian the taller one pulled the other guy with him and they left.

It was just a bit creepy... Maybe I'm just really jumpy right now.

-The changed filename ROT13s into: Follow the trail
-Something in or behind the picture.. Could it be stegged?

Also, Winchester answered my question on who to follow:

Gur cvpgher ubyqf gur pyhr

ROT 13 it and you get: The picture holds the clue.

So I think it's safe to say there is something we're missing about the pic.

And, now, someone claiming to be Trish is commenting.

This thing hooked me in about 15 minutes after finding it.

If she got a physical picture, how could it be stegged? I ran it a couple of different ways and couldn't find anything there. Even opening up the file in a text editor shows that there isn't much to it. If there's any message hidden in there, its really really short. I'm stumped.

As for this new journal ... very odd. Look at some of the post dates. The coordinates are interesting as well. The place called out in the first post is in Chicago ... possibly the location where the Great Chicago Fire started. The second is in Central Park. The third is near the airport in Mobile, AL. It would seem to be legit and in game, but it seems so disjointed I can't put anything together ... not even what we're supposed to be doing next exactly.

jphs, steg-detect, and raw text didn't produce anything. If its stegged, I'm clueless as to how it was done. The savannah pic is only 30k, so even if its stegged, its an extremely small message hidden within. The pic of Tricia is a png. I've never seen a steg png before. That's not saying it isn't one, I just wouldn't even know where to begin with that.

I believe that photo is of an Acacia. (Acacia is the genus of the species and there are over 700 types.) They grow wild in Africa. They're a thorny tree and used to be thought of as the cause of malaria. Now parts of the tree can be used as medicine to treat malaria.

ETA: I *meant* to say, that it looks similar to an Umbrella Acacia, but I'm not certain.

Also: I noticed in Tricia's blog in the archives, some of the coordinates were labeled 'perfume.' According to Wikipedia, "arcana farnesiana is used in the perfume industry because of it's strong fragrance" and is mentioned in the Bible as an incense. Coincidence? <shrug>

Maybe someone who knows more about cyphers than I do can see if 'acacia' or something to do with them could be used as a key word of some sort?

Most of my info came from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acacia

Again, I'm at work so I can't install this:
http://www.guillermito2.net/stegano/jpegx/JpegX_Hidden_Text_Finder_02.zip
but it's a util called JpegX to find hidden text in JPG file, PW or no PW.

tipsila: Thanks

Uberg33k: How were you formating the Latitude and Longitude? When I put them in, I wound up getting locations around China.

For reference:

Originals:
Perfume -- 3041N8815W
Alligators -- 4047N7358W
The fire -- 4153N8738W

My formats:
30 41 00 N 88 15 00 W
40 47 00 N 73 58 00 W
41 53 00 N 87 38 00 W

I'm also assuming the words are supposed to be important.

The sky in the picture of the savanna looks pieced together, but I haven't gotten anything meaningful out of it. Also, she titled it "savannah", which is the name of the city in Georgia. The type of plain depicted is spelled "savanna". I see someone has already suggested Savannah, Georgia to her, and I've asked why she titled it that.

Some of the symbols in the letter appear to be astrological signs. The circle with the dot in it is the symbol for the sun, the symbol with the line capped by inward pointing arrows could be pisces, and the question mark with the three lines radiating from the bottom is an adaptation of the symbol for ceres. May not be of any use, but I really can't shake the idea that I've seen this kind of 'code alphabet' used before.

RE: post dates in new journal

I'm not sure if it's a clue or just a flaw (by not taking into account how Livejournal works), but the posts before the 25th were backdated. If you look at the full User Info:

http://srsfolklore.livejournal.com/profile?mode=full

You see:

Date created: 2007-07-25 08:16:47

So all of the entries in there were posted after that date/time regardless of the date/time they display.

Again, not sure if it's a clue or a flaw.

Edit:

richardemoore: I tried that program and got "This is probably not a JpegX carrier file" on the savannah pic.

UGH. So I tried to write to Tricia via her LJ email, an offer to help if I could. I thought an email would go over better, as she obviously doesn't want to talk about whatever's going on publicly. (Either that, or that's not Tricia at all that posted today.) Took forever to compose, and I send it, and got an automated failure notice immediately.

So...If anyone finds a valid email address for her, let me know.

Ha! I figured out what the "Perfume" tag was for:

http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/crime/a/two_sniffs.htm

(Also figured out how to do the map coordinates, which is how I figured out the relevance of 'perfume'.)

Two urban legends and one historical event?

Err, to be clear, the urban legends would be the perfume story and the alligators in the sewers of New York. The real event would be the Chicago fire.

Still don't have a good idea what to do with the pic from the library, or the pic of Tricia if anything is there.

Edit: Hmm, nope, the perfume story is based on an actual event even if it did turn into an urban legend... Has someone actually found an alligator in Central Park?

Nice catch, Zaecus! Alright, so here's my take on it:
follow the trail
from good (light) tricia to bad (dark, negative) tricia.
She stops posting the coords and gets an attitude...
Is there a logical sequence to her coords? or a logical lack in her new one?

Some urban legend about trees on the savanna? Is that what's behind the picture? A story behind the picture?
Maybe we find that same image on an urban legend posting?
Just throwin' ideas out here.[/i]

There is an urban legend that Osama Bin Laden's fortune came from Gum Arabic, which is derived from the Acacia tree. (Used as a food additive.) There was a widespread boycott of the product in the US after 9/11 and prices doubled, until the US State Department issued a release saying that Bin Laden had divested his stocks when he was expelled from Sudan in 1996.
Referenced here: http://www.foodnavigator-usa.com/news/ng.asp?id=56832-hydrocolloid-gum-arabic

So, again, an urban legend based on *some* factual information.
