[META] A warning about getting involved with 1-18-08.

Greetings. It's me, Matt the Pale. My time here at the Unforums was unfortunately much shorter than I would have liked it to be -- I found Unfiction when I first joined the Lost Experience, and even though I wanted to join in with the community on playing other ARGs, I never got the chance to do so. However, I saw the trailer for 1-18-08 in the theaters when I went to see Transformers. Upon discovering that it was from J. J. Abrams and that it seemed that he was starting an ARG based on it, I feel compelled to give you a warning.

I must admit, the style of the trailer really got my attention -- the hand-held camera style, the out-of-the blue occurance of chaos in the city, explosions, and of course the lack of a name for the movie. Sure, I could see how this might have the potential to be a really awesome movie with a good ARG to go along with it. Then I remembered this was from J.J. Abrams.

Don't get me wrong. I will say this about Abrams: he's really good at hooking people with an interesting-looking story. I was hooked on Alias when it first aired. I also thought Lost was interesting when it first aired. Then, both times, both of those shows turned into a major disappointment. Some of you may remember me from my participation from the Lost Experience ARG. It, too, was disappointing (to put it lightly).

My warning is this: enjoy 1-18-08 while you can, for in the end, you will walk away feeling like you've been had. If at all possible, play some other ARG -- there are many good ones out there that are worth playing: none of them come from Abrams. As for myself, I will no longer allow that con man to pull another one on me.

Anyone see Howard the Duck? Has it stopped you from seeing other George Lucas films? Laughing

EDIT: Added smiley. I feel you. I just really, REALLY hope you're wrong.

Very Happy Heh, yeah that was a pretty bad one. I hope I'm wrong as well; I hope everyone involved with 1-18-08 will not be disappointed but instead amazed at a depth of plot, character development, and other things besides. However, I think his track record speaks for itself.

Then I feel fortunate to have not been pulled in by the machine that may be Abrams. *Crossing fingers for a great flick*

For all the new peeps on the forum, it might be worth heeding Matt's warning.

Holy old thread, Batman.

But the warning still holds true, of course... though it's a bit late.

It's cool dude. But I guess a lot of us will try and see it through to the end. If anything, it's a lesson on do and don't.

Wow, can you say "taking things a little too seriously" ? Someone needs a different hobby or to get outside a little bit. If all that upsets you like that, then id hate to see what something that meant something for real would do to you. Say it with me " Its only a game" well, if u can call it that. Point being, dont take things so serious. In the end, did this really cause you any physical or mental harm. And if it did cause you mental harm, then its you and not it that needs help. i just cant understand how someone can get so worked up about something so meaningless. Someone needs to see their doctor about their stress issues or something . Wow, just wow Rolling Eyes

How so? Im just responding to the post. Read my other post in the thread asking what would you do if the movie and all its prints were destroyed. I said id go on with my life and not lose any sleep over it. I just cant understand getting all worked up over a game or a movie or anything. In the end, none of it matters, to paraphrase Linkin Park. I wouldnt take my response as being all serious or anything. I was just telling him to calm down , it wasnt worth getting all worked up about
