 I should have said this earlier...

Meta rant:

So...we are still going to hide things from potential new players?
I don't understand how they expect more people to get into this, if everyone has to "sign up" for it...
Imagine how frustrating it is for someone new asking to be put on someone else's email list.

I think you are reading it the wrong way. This is supposed to be posted on UF. It's just the way things work around here. Any "traitors" are only those the PM's put in themselves. This board is untouchable and any information taken from here used to mess with the game is to be ignored.

If they see this differently and make that public, I'm officially resigning from the game.
But as I said, I think you are just reading it that way, because the topic of this game seems to suggest that's the way it should be. I admit, the topic of this game is one of those that can lead to the assumption you have to be all hush-hush.

But not here. I think the moderators won't host this if it continues like this in a later stage. That's maybe why the PM's set up an outside board, now.
I'm only watching this for the time being. Sad

Sorry, I knew what you were going to do, but somehow I thought an intervention might happen and I wouldn't have to criticise, but I'm not really happy with this right now.

100% agree

That has been my complaint from beginning also, Abraxas. Do they want a huge audience? Or do they want 5 ppl to follow this story? I still maintain that we have not been given ALL of the information. I hope djinn sees that he is losing his audience quickly. It was also my understanding, that some of the emails to people specifically asked that certain information not be shared (posted publically).....

I hope this changes soon. There are plenty of different types of media to tell this story through, without enlisting private emails as the main source.

The website in question

Waste of time. Here is the message posted on first page....

Project overview & activity
To: The 2nd Unit Crew

Germain asked me leave a note saying Hello and letting you know that this space is available to be used in any way that is useful to you. If you have a questions about anything let me know. [If I don't have the answer I'll make one up.]

This place doesn't have the most robust toolset, but it's secure and some of the stuff should be useful for compiling the types of info that it looks like you folks get into. [Definitely a little different from the stuff I'm usually involved with, but maybe not too different.] There's a chat room function, but I think it's limited to 4 concurrent users. Let me know. The 'writeboard' looks like a mini-wiki, so that might be useful.

We'll be in and out [still in the middle of this other project], so if you need something while we're out just leave a message.

Nice to meet ya,
J2

And the rest of the pages are stuff we already have. I left a message there asking about the general public being able to access the site.....because the way it looks, there are only SEVEN people following this?

i think i was expecting a site where content would be made available. the "collaboration" I expectd to be there was of information flowing from PMs to us--ie more or less just another IG content site--not info exchanged among ourselves. It does look like it's meant to be a UF alternative, and I'm not sure how to proceed while still maintaining information flow for new people and anyone else who may not have gotten on "the list." I'm not sure exactly whjat's going on, but I doubt that they want to see the audience limited. I was a little surprised when I saw it, too. I suspse it's possible that they build a concept for this story that just won't be able to play out on UF, but I fear that the six or so people they added just won't be enough to maintain the game/story for very long.

As long as I can, I hope to keep a foot in both worlds. I will make every attempt to post all info from the 127 site here. As far as I'm concerend, this forum is where the game is played, and 127 is an IG device to com with IG characters. I hope this is the PMs intent or tha tit is at least compatible with their intent. I am interested in seeing how their vision plays out.

tpetal is WAY too talkative for twitter....lol
He is going crazy with 20 posts because each post is only 140 characters. He is also making public alot of the files (that we have) but that way anyone new can access this stuff....good move. Obviously they read this frequently. I don't intend on using the 'secret' site for any information. They will have to think of a better way to communicate.

Odds n Ends

I think the 'secret' site is fine for communicating with Germain's group. It beats the hell out of having him contact a point person via email.

We should continue to share information and speculation here. We then provide Germain's group with whatever's relevant.

And yeah, TPetal became very loquacious on twitter. Were you replying, coffee?

Germain is adding the "fourth protocol" as we speak. (11:20 pm, Ohio time)

OOG/Meta
Breaching the fourth wall

New post up at the Overwatch Production Journal. Seems to be a direct response to the metaphysical criticism leveled at the game.

link
Quote:
Well, since you've asked us a direct question we feel compelled to give you a direct answer.

The answer is: YES.

Yes; this entire project, the events that chronicle the efforts of a couple small groups of people trying to deal with the consequences of a leak at the OIS, has been developed, produced, and delivered for SEVEN people - some days a few more and some days a few less.

We have considered them to be seven extraordinary people, capable of making (and here I am looking for a really good adjective because I feel this very strongly) truly wonderful, and in some cases spooky, leaps of logic and fancy; smart people, funny people, sharp people. But yeah, let me count them up again...yep, looks like about seven.

It's true, we didn't target the exact number of 'seven' as the perfect number of people that we wanted to be involved in this part of OVERWATCH (we were actually partial to nine), but we knew from the start that the nature of this part of the project would very likely involve a relatively small number of people. So we structured things to really play to that small group of people, the ones who were truly interested in the story and who were able to work together to interact within the strictures of a world where people are paranoid, cautious and scared.

Since we are not schilling for a big new movie or a cool new game, since millions of dollars are not on the line, that didn't bother us in the least. We looked forward to the opportunity to truly tailor certain aspects of the experience to the individuals who were working hand-in-hand with the other characters to figure out more of what is going on with OSPREY.

What I never accounted for - and this is entirely my failing, not that of anyone else at Djinn - was the possibility that the small number of people who ended up being most involved in OV:G/I (maybe we'll talk about why we call it that sometime) would not want to be a small number of people, but would much prefer being a large number of people.

I hope you will accept my sincere apologies; I misread your interests and desires and gave you a large portion of what you apparently did not want. I am truly sorry about that. And I thank you very much for making your feelings known, it's one thing to hope to make seven people very happy it's entirely another to know that you are making no one happy.

I can't tell you much badly I wish I could change everything around to make it more wide-open to everyone. But I can't, at least not for this story. It has characters who are afraid, characters who are crazy, characters who are paranoid, and characters who are out for blood. From our perspective these characters simply cannot interact directly with very large groups of people and remain true to the underlying framework of what is going on.

I hope that there are at least a couple of you (TWO Wink ) who are interested enough in the story, as a story, to stay and follow what happens with OV:G/I. True, it will likely be more linear and with a good deal less direct interaction, but the characters will continue on their various courses and, insofar as I can work them into this story, I will do everything I can to include interactive elements that can be enjoyed by as wide an audience as possible. I'm not sure I can make that work, but I'll try.

To those of you who have come with us this far, I thank you very much, and I hope that you have gotten at least some intrinsic entertainment out of the story and perhaps will get some more. We really have worked hard, and it really has been just for you.

Regards,
David

PS. Not sure that it matters now, but for the record; 127 was simply to have been a place where Germain could give you information and where you could use the 'writeboards' (the mini-wikis) to outline your collective thoughts in an easier to follow format. Several of you had mentioned the potential usefulness of a wiki, and we were just trying to give you access to one in the guise of a story element. Since you all would have been admins, you all could have added as many new members as you wanted (just a standard FOAF trust model).

Pretty much matches what I'd surmised. This isn't an ARG, strictly speaking. It's an interactive, multimedia story. They always said their primary interest was in exploring how information is disseminated and used. At least he's trying to make some accomodation to our interests.

I'll stick it out. And when I get a chance I'll try to load as much of the story-to-date onto the 127 site. Unless you'd rather do that, Coffeebean. That way, in the eventuality the UF moderators overlook (yeah, that's awful) the production's metaphysics, we have a handy way to get newbs up to speed with a reference thread.

hmmm

Not sure what to make of that....it reeks of sarcasm.

The general idea I get, is that because of the secretiveness of the characters, the files, and trying to stay alive, they must find only a person or two to communicate with....it is then up to the person they select at the time, to relay that info to the entire group. That makes sense, but also loses people if all of the information is not being shared.

I agree that we should keep posting anything we get. This is not part of the game, therefore it endangers no one in the game.

I would like to see more than seven ppl continueing to follow this, and YES, more than NINE too. Wink

Have at it, Mort
I didn't see the bottom part of your message until just now. It sounds like a good idea...just keep leaving the web address here for everyone to join the other site? And should we post a password too? Or we can just okay anyone else that wants to join? Not sure which "4" are supposed to be Admins at that site. Maybe you, zizka, germain, and tristan? 127 site is gone.

and go solve that cipher while your at it Razz

We're in total agreement about Twittering, and all.

Hrmm. I think we could've made use of the 127 site given that it was secure and gave communal access to Germain. An improvement over the email situation. I suppose we can still register for WordPress accounts and comment at FoF.

Oh well, we still need the summary. And the cipher is beyond me. I'm still inclined to believe it was an in-progress key until shown otherwise.

Did Germain change the passwords to the posts on FoF? The only one I can still access with the old scheme is Tue 7/17.

same for me

Bombay is the only one that works. Either we have angered the blog gods or he was working on the site and quit when we became disgruntled about his new offering (127 site)...

I think we should "rally the troops" (that's a phrase isn't it?)...anyways, get organized, get everyone on the same page, up to steam, and continue from there.

If anyone has any information that has not been made public, I think now is the time to do so. I have nothing extra, but go to

http://coffeebean36.wordpress.com to read everything so far. Should be 5 pages. Any other suggestions on how to get everyone together would be great.

that (*&%$## cipher

If you look at the cipher. M (first row) -2 (left) +5 (down) (Including the -2 letter) = ENEMY

-2 +5 for the D & T in same row = PREVENTION

Not so lucky with the rest of the words
C = UP AT
EE = HBTTMOAS (tomb hats/most bath/moth bats)
BT = EANETSR UHHHLAA ?????
P = OFKROTT ???
OI= YS

So, the first row works, but not the rest.....so I am going to look at a different add/subtract pattern for the rest.
