Rabid Holes Again
Some specific questions

Hi,

i'm new to this site, but playing ARGs since a long time - the first I touched was The Beast, but i left it after some hours of riddling. In my last Summer Holidays I started a local ARG, just a small "Follow-the-hints-to-the-treasure"-thing. It didn't had a big background story.

Now I have holidays again and started to create a new local thing, this time with a bigger background story. The problems I see with it are the two key items that are needed to be combined in some ways; a notebook (a real one out of paper, not a Laptop Wink) and a date book.

The notebook is an eye catcher, it includes many scribbles, collages, excerpts from dramas and other cool stuff. On the first two pages are two important internet pages and the sentence "Please mail me if you find this notebook" with an email adresse. What i worry about is that the person i send the notebook (via mail) isn't interessted about such things and puts it in the rubish bin. Any ideas to avoid this?

The date book will be hidden somewhere in my town, but i have no idea how to spread the place of it. The main character lost it there, so he don't know where it is. Any ideas to solve this problem?

An other problem is the required combination of the two items. The contact between the two "item carrier" should be made by mail - but what if they don't react to those mails?

I don't really want to have the game imploded because of the two items, but i don't want to drop this idea, because i spent some hours to create them.

Hope my english isn't too bad - my english teacher always says it is, but i hope you understand me Wink

greets, KingBender

As for the notebook-

I'm assuming that it's going to be the first of the two books to be found. It would be simple enough to place it (or leave clues to it) where a person who would be interested finds it. Pick a target. Maybe the 16 year old boy who is always reading sci-fi or fantasy novels. Maybe the local Librarian. Would a Librarian throw away someones notebook if there was an obvious way to get in touch with it's owner?

The datebook-

Do the notebook and datebook belong to the same character? If so, when the person who has the notebook gets in touch with the owner he/she can tell the player where they were in the town and they can back track until they find it.

Sorry, didn't explained it enough:

The Note Book goes to a random dweller (right word???) of my town, via mail, with a note that he/she should take it for some time, my main char will later come to get it back. So here i have a little bit control, i can give it to someone who is really inquisitive.

The Date Book is hidden somewhere and should be found.

At last both item carriers have to find another to solve the riddles in the books.

The idea of back tracking is really nice, thanks.

That's my point.

Don't make the dweller "random". Pick a particular person who is more likely to be intrigued. If you randomly pick someone the chances of them caring is very small. Someone who loves a story or even a mystery will surely be more likely to follow your clues.

Yeah, I had the same thougt.

Just one more problem: What will happen if both people don't find each other? That would make the game implode very fast, because it's needed for the game that they get in contact and try to solve the riddles in the books.

My idea was to send both a mail (they will hopefully both mail my main char, the email is written almoust everywhere) to get in contact with each other, but what shall i do if this isn't enough?

Well, as a fail-safe, you could indicate that its an ARG, and that they should re-mail it to you if they dont want to participate. Or something like that.

((Sorry if this is a necro-post, noticed the date after post was made.))
