Well ... as someone that was there ...

I got the Slusho shirt and the poster. Will be posting a pic as soon as I get around to taking it.

The poster does, in fact, have "MONSTROUS" across the top and what appears to be three huge claw marks across SOL's back.

The reason, no doubt, the head was "taken."

OK, so should we now start looking for links between Infocom and donkeys? Or cheese? Or *scratches head* ... ????

No...no.

I posted that because Abrams is a self-confessed Infocom junkie. I read an interview he did a while back where he called himself their "biggest...fan ever".

So it's by no means out of the question that the game, if game it is, is going to follow the Infocom model. It's quite possible that the Infocom shirt was a bone to us out here on the Unforums letting us know, in some fashion, "Game On!"

But knowing how devlishly clever and complicated those Infocom games were is a good thing to keep in the backs of our minds because if Abrams follows that model, we're going to be in for a hell of a ride.

Here's the picture of the claw marks.

Ignore the red/orange light in the upper right corner, it's a reflecton of an overhead light.

I probably should have included one of these in my previous post: Wink

Anyways, I was really just wondering ... so what now? Maybe Slusho.jp will update soon to something more useful. We can only hope! Wink

Does anybody know if Abrams will be making any other appearances at ComicCon (to talk about Star Trek some more or whatever)? Or was this it?

Based on the program I looked at, I didn't see him listed anywhere else.

I doubt it's important in any way, but INFOCOM, game company, was aquired by Activision and then shut down in the early 90s.

Eeeeeeeeenteresting.

Infocom was more than a mere game company. It pioneered the type of game called "interactive fiction". You might have heard of Zork or Leather Goddesses of Phobos. They pretty much wrote the book on interactive fiction gaming as well as Easter Eggs.

Wikipedia has a surprisingly well-written article on the company. The part I found interesting is this:
Quote:

Infocom titles featured strong storytelling and rich descriptions, eschewing the day's primitive graphic capabilities, allowing users to use their own imaginations for the lavish and exotic locations the games described. Infocom's puzzles were unique in that they were usually tightly integrated into the storyline, and rarely did gamers feel like they were being made to jump through one arbitrary hoop after another, as was the case in many of the competitors' games. The puzzles were logical but also required close attention to the clues and hints given in the story, causing most gamers to keep copious notes as they went along.

Sometimes, though, Infocom threw in puzzles just for the humor of it—if the user never ran into these, they could still finish the game just fine. But discovering these early Easter Eggs was satisfying for some fans of the games. For example, one popular example was in the Enchanter game, which involved collecting magic spells to use in accomplishing the quest. One of these was a summoning spell, which the player needed to use to summon certain characters at different parts of the game. At one point the game mentions the "Implementers" who were responsible for creating the land of Zork. If the player tried to summon the Implementers, the game would suddenly produce a vision of Dave Lebling and Marc Blank at their computers, surprised at this "bug" in the game and working feverishly to fix it.

Third, the inclusion of "feelies"—imaginative props and extras tied to the game's theme—provided some copy protection against pirating. Some games were unsolvable without the extra content provided with the boxed game. And because of the cleverness and uniqueness of the feelies, users rarely felt like they were an intrusion or inconvenience, as was the case with most of the other copy-protection schemes of the time.

In addition to doing all the interesting games within games, puzzles and what not, Infocom also did a game called The Lurking Horror, which was inspired by the works of HP Lovecraft.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lurking_Horror

Who knows. Maybe he is just a big Zork fan. Maybe Infocom shirts are the new trucker hats. Then again, maybe the Infocom reference is meant to say there is a game within everything here. Guess time will tell.

what if the SOL head is the best part of the film?

I really was looking forward to being able to refer to this project by it's name and not something like "yeah- that 1-18-08/cloverfield thing, JJ Abrams- yeah that crazy trailer" film.

the infocom T-shirt is just another wink and nodd to us drooling infants. don't obess on it, acknowledge it. Unless maybe, Rob works for Infocom-- oh wait this isn't the theories page-

it's just our luck no one at con asked abrams if this was going to be an ARG or not.

my guess? not. they're having way too much fun with us guessing whether it is or not. they figure it's enough time to keep us on our toes until they throw us another crumb of a clue as to what the movies going to be about, so on, so forth.

Ok, it was really difficult to get into Hall H this year, but I managed it.

Pretty much everything that needed to be said has been said in this thread.

Abrams talked briefly about wanting to make a monster movie that wasn't a "man in suit" breaking up a city, and he told us that the title wasn't Monstrous. If you look at the AICN article some others have linked, it appears to be an adjective teaser for the monster.

In the times I've seen Abrams, he is normally a really cool and confident speaker - when he was on the stage talking about Cloverfield he seemed really nervous and anxious to get out of there.

On the subject of questions, no one really got a chance to ask questions of the panels this year, and so any hope of asking about Cloverfield was shot down with Abram's appearances being fairly brief.

The Infocom shirt I am hoping is a nod to us ARGers out here that something is coming - he's notorious for his love of the old interactive fiction games that company used to make back when it still existed.

All in all, nothing was advanced, no clues or hints were dropped, no words were emphasized.

It'll be interesting how his people proceed from here, because this was definitely a blow to the hype machine - you could hear the disappointment in the dozens of people around me wearing Lost shirts when he rushed on and off stage.

edit: I did get a Slusho! shirt (which is an XL so way too big) and the teaser poster everyone is linking above.

Yeah. The Trailer played. He walked on and said his speech. walked halfway across the stage. Pointed up and the a posted "Monstrous" poster dropped. He walked off.

I've been meaning to say this.

From all the "quotes" I've seen. Something [i]has been[/u] dropped.

He said "That's how I know he's my son." In reference to his son liking toys. Not really useful, but none the less, "dropped."

gaaaaahhhhhh JJ you are SUCH a tease.

However I have to say YES!! I am glad they are "listening" and making slusho tshirts available at all - makes me figure they'll be more generally available in time. I definitely want one.

But gaaaahhhhh JJ You are SUCH a tease.

Man, that thing has to be at least as big as the statue. Two to three claws perhaps..nice picture.
