Codes aren't my forte, but I'll dissect this verse and see what I can get out of it.
Quote:
I speak to you of my intent
But intentions are eddies and whorls
And they change with the course of a stream
This stream becomes a river
And a cataract of logic and doubt
The writer is talking about what they plan to do, obviously. But they also say that these intentions are simply 'eddies and whorls', which can be taken to mean that they change on the writer's 'stream' of thoughts, so to speak. The next two lines expand on this, and possibly show the debate in themselves between logic and ethics.
Quote:
Who has the right to live?
The light with the will to create me?
Or dark with the will to consume?
This leads me to believe that the writer is either Cortana, a monitor, or something similar to a monitor. 'The light with the will to create' being the race that to made, or constructed the writer (either human or Forerunner). The 'dark with the will to consume' can be easily applied to the Flood.
Quote:
Sometimes might is right
And sometimes the lamb must submit to the lion
This can be taken to mean that brute force is sometimes the correct way to go about things.
Quote:
My convictions are tested
My intentions now are fey and strange
Should I pursue a pyrrhic choice?
And rethink alliances?
And choose a new philosophy?
Right or might?
Truly I do not know
But you will, soon enough
The writer seems unsure of where their loyalties lie. They don't know what they want to do. Do they want to change the alliances they hold?
The 'Right or might?' line is interesting. 'Right' can be either moral correctness, or a right to exist/own something etc. 'Might' is an allusion to brute force again.
Quote:
For this is where the cataract floods
And drowns the boon of higher ground
A rather ominous close. I take this to mean that something bad is going to happen in the very near future, and nobody is going to escape the 'flood' by being on 'higher ground'.
Well, that's my ideas. Any fixes would be appreciated.

I see that as part of the light and dark dichotomy that runs through the entire thing. We have the "might is right" brute force approch, and then the 'lamb must submit to the lion" survival through submission approch. What I mean by that, is like the willow tree or reeds. They bend and submit to the brute force of the wind, and thus survive, where an oak for example will stand against the wind, and likely shatter.
So we have both sides of the fence. Fight back, and become the monster we fight, or surrender and let them take over, but try to fight from within.
That's what I get from that line anyway

No they are still on High Charity which was in orbit around Delta Halo. Only the forerunner ship that they had cannibalised to power High Charity was on it's way to Earth.

ok, let me draw you attention to a few things (crypto clues)
*notice the use of uncommon words (which are usual signs of using words which have a certain latter in a certain place) eddies whorls cataract fey pyrrhic boon. This is a clue to tell us that there is some othe message hidden in this text for sure.
*notice the strange sentance structure in some cases. This is another clue. it is not just done for the sake of it... notice what music artists do when they are trying to make lyrics ryhme.. the throw in extra syllables, and strange words.
This poem is structured like that for a reason. Grids haven't turned up much yet, but trying some other things, then i will publish again, either to say.. "Check this out" or "I wasted my time, there nothing there."
Anyone else looking into this?

I am of the same mind in this. I too think there is some to this, But I think this has a different meaning.
The whole imagery used in this poem makes me think of a river which leads me to think of valhalla. Also the higher ground comment at the end makes me think if High Ground, the other multiplayer map that was used in the beta.
both of these levels are in the concept art and screen shot area of the halo 3 content pages. Yes I said content, maybe this alludes to how the next lead to the open the server will be presented, anywhere they might have valhala or highground included.
But this is just a theory.

One thing I found -- "fey" is usually described in the dictionary thusly:
Quote:
adj.
1. Having or displaying an otherworldly, magical, or fairylike aspect or quality
2. Having visionary power; clairvoyant.
3. Appearing touched or crazy, as if under a spell.
However, my dictionary gives a secondary meaning:
Quote:
Scots.
1. Fated to die soon.
2. Full of the sense of approaching death.
Frankie has a Scottish background, and is one of the primary writers of this ARG, IIRC...
EDIT:
Here's another definition from Wikipedia:
Quote:
Fey
A word means "doomed, fated to die", often ascribed to supernatural causes, and evidenced by abnormal behavior (cognate to Old Norse féigr, German feige).
Interesting... this must be from Cortana's POV

2 things I've noticed from this and the video.
They mention Higher Ground which could be changed to the Halo3 map name Highground.
In the video they mention Last Resort which is the remade Zanzibar name.
Just throwing that out.

Cortana appeared on a computer in the map High Ground. And it's the successor to Zanzibar which is being remade into Last Resort.
Useless data, but interesting I guess.

pyrrhic? Theory I'm chasing my own tail here but, from what I get of this on wiki is that(looking up pyrrhic, and then clicking on metrical feet) here is the key to unlocking this one I think... "To scan for feet, one should focus on the stream of sound alone and set aside the actual meaning of the words." (last sentence of first section) now I'm going to try and record myself reciting this poem and keep it repeating until I hear something, think about it how'd the guys unlock this server? Sound. Maybe well get our next clue through sound.

I don't think you meant successor as wasn't Zanzibar it's successor?

Successor is the one that comes after. Zanzibar was first. Last Resort is the H3 incarnation. I think successor would be correct here.
But, I'm not sure of your line of thinking. How would Zanzibar be Last Resort's successor?

re: [OT] It's a confusing phrasing that could of been taken either way.

I read it as Cortana appeared on the map High Ground which became Zanzibar which is now becoming Last Resort. It confused me because the successor to Zanzibar IS Last Resort or rather Zanzibar is being remade into Last Resort.

Hrm. Yeah. That could have been taken in the sense of High Ground being the successor to Zanzibar.
I must've been in the same state of consciousness as the writer when I read it. Heh.
