[META] 1-18-08 Information Request and Clarification Request

Hello! I'm a brand new newbie who has never been involved in an ARG before (I didn't actually know they existed until I stumbled upon "Ethan Haas Was Right" and was lead indirectly here).

I bring this up because I don't want to offend the community or do something dumb and newbie-ish but I have a feeling I will. I did read through the Guidelines and the Tutorial and I didn't see anything against asking for clarification in posts, but if I have done something that might be wrong or offensive, I humbly ask your forgiveness and for kind correction so I can do everything right in the future.

First, I have a requet for clarification:

1. Has it been established that there is an ARG in process? Several posts suggest there is one; one poster says that the new additions to the 1-18-08 website convinced him that there's no ARG involved. What does the majority of the current information suggest?

2. What websites are *known* to be directly involved with the "Cloverfield" project? There were many links including links to Biblical websites that I had some trouble untangling as being relevant or not relevant.

3. Is there a dedicated place for clues, as opposed to speculations or guesses based on people's opinions of the presented evidence? Is there a thread within this subject specifically for compiling clues? I've seen many threads that recount what has been presented before but nothing that really looked like a "put your clue here" thread.

4. I have heard many rumors of outside sources (hard copies from magazines, news broadcasts, etc) that provide extra clues to the nature of the show (someone said the lines, "It's alive, it's huge" were very important clues according to some magazine article). Have these outside sources been confirmed as real and not just hoaxes as some websites are now known to be confirmed 1-18-08 hoaxes?

As for information, I would like any websites that have compiled information based on facts, not speculations, which are always fun but can be confusing to a newb.

All in all, this wasn't what I was expecting to find when I went looking for my daily "escape the room" fix, but this is a lot of fun and I am enjoying reading all your wonderful speculations. Thanks millions for providing this great forum.

As for 3) well, separating clues from speculation has proved near impossible.

Also, doesn't seem like there's an actual ARG yet. But I'm no expert either.

No, it haasn't been established yet. I'm one of those who believe that there isn't an ARG right now, or if there is, it's frightfully sloppy. Opinions do differ and there's no way to know at this point what's correct.

The only sites I know are www.1-18-08.com and slusho.jp at this point.

Not really, but the "sub threads" for slusho and the 1-18-08 site are probably the best place to find the new stuff. It's a tough thing to do, though.

The only thing outside the trailer and the two sites that have been positively confirmed is the e-mail from Abrams to AICN's Harry Knowles saying that the Ethan Haas ARG wasn't part of this game.

I'll take the chance to plug my own site. I've done my best to post only observable and verified facts about the trailer and the pages and to keep the speculation to a bare minimum. That's not to say that there won't be room for speculation, but it'll be clearly marked as such. I've not put anything new there for some time, but there hasn't really been anything new to post, IMO. I do have a couple links there to other good Cloverfield sites and am ready to link to more as I see them. Feel free to read and comment freely.

Depends on your definition of ARG.

We're awaiting the next phase, hopefully to launch after J.J.Abrams appears at ComicCon (this Thursday, i believe). Whatever happens then may establish what we should be doing and how.

Update

I took a break for a couple days and it all lunges forward. I remember last week someone mentioning some myspace pages that were presumed OOG, fansite or fakes - yet now I see a few threads with myspace page links and everyone's on it as IG. Is that related to the original posts about the MS pages or is this a new find? If it's a new find, how did this come about - surely somebody didn't just pull that outta their ass and end up with a chunk of myspace pages for these characters (however, if these are official IGs then coolkickin - that's what I was hoping for!)....which leads me back to the snag: how would we have found them at all given the sites?

I've seen the 5th pic, figured out how to flip them, and read somewhere about using something posted on the back to find the ms pages. Could you fill me in on the specifics on how this came about?

I've seen the references to listing the MS pages and all, but what was the motivation to figure out who is related to who and who's dating who - or is that just something ya did for the sake of doing it? I've got a sorely neglected ms page I thought I deleted not long ago but apparently it's accessible...what's up with the add requests, are they accepting friends or is it blocked? IMs being answered - any sort of character interaction? I ask because I'd only reactivate the ms page if it looks like interaction is gonna happen - otherwise, ms sucks as much as aol and if I can avoid it without missing something cool IG, I like it ;-p

I've also gotten majorly confused about the movie poster. I remember the thread started where someone posted a pic of 3 movie promo posters outside a building, which was followed up with the standard "it's fake" business....and now trying to wade through the various comments and figure out what's relevant and what's opinion, I'm just confused about the poster - what's the IG status relevance of the movie poster - headless SOL - is this "the" poster for the movie or was this all about a PSd tangent somebody had?

WTF is up with slusho now? A) YAY on the tshirts - they listened! B) wait...they listened? Hmmm...

The mixing drinks - so just slide the lever and click and it zooms (ahhh zoom, to go reaaaaalllly fast in a circle, got it) and makes a drink and....and then what? Is there a point to the activity? If so what is it? Has anyone done a synopsis of sorts on slusho's updates in the last several days about what is known vs what's speculation? If so could you point me to that please?

Thanks. And yeah I did read most of the threads and did much skimming over sillyass shit that had nothing to do with anything so I could've missed a little gem of actual relevant info here and there. The questions are really to get a starting point to catch up. Get back in the groove basically. I'd really appreciate any update or clarification on the above stuff....Thanks!

EDIT: I saw a post about a slusho chat - someone else asked a couple times where it was and I didn't see where it was answered so I'm asking again...and do I need irc for it or can I go in via web?

You can visit the chat room using a java-enabled browser by going to this link to the Unfiction chat page -- the top of that page also has the information for people using their own chat client such as mIRC to connect to irc.chat-solutions.org:6667

Select #slusho as the room, or after connecting type:
/join #slusho
