Amboy's Lifelong Cherokee Resident to Depart Soon

by Saida Sagefrost, Amboy Monthly

Clarence Houston, Amboy's Resident Cherokee Indian is leaving Amboy to begin a Spirit Quest for his ancestral eldership. Ever since Houston turned, 50, he has known that this would occur.
Houston says that he has not always lived the Cherokee way under the old sacred traditions. However, he claims most of this sacred transformation came about when he first met a Cherokee medicine woman, Naiki, while he was briefly in Texas . Eighty-two year old Naiki, is regarded as extremely knowledgeable by the Cherokee in the old sacred ways and traditions.

Even though Houston is of mixed heritage (three-eights Amonsoquath Cherokee, three-eights Scottish, and one quarter Irish), Houston claims his calling to his Cherokee roots is in his DNA. According to him, his Cherokee ancestors were aware of seven hundred years prior the first Spanish Conquistador set foot upon the shores of the North America.

According to Naiki, these events and others that are rapidly occurring were first prophesied to the Cherokee during the European Dark Ages. It was revealed to the Cherokee that one day all people with Cherokee DNA will leave the cities of stone and return once again together as a people. Houston feels that this is akin to the Jews being exiled from their original homeland.

Today, many things have recently come about that were revealed in these ancient and sacred prophecies of the Cherokee. According to the prophecies "the time will come when the white two-legged will fly a mighty eagle to the moon." Houston solemnly states, "remember the Apollo missions to the moon. I vividly remember hearing the words that day "the Eagle has landed."

Houston continues to operate his Tribal Arts Gallery, Primitive Accents, here on the Main Street of Amboy. He not only deals in special and sometimes sacred items from Cherokee and other Native American tribes, but also has continues to carry very unique items from other tribal cultures throughout the world. If you would like to see some of the items that Houston has specialized in visit his site on Ebay.

Houston over the years has taught many Amboy residents about the differences in tribal cultures. Especially the differences between the different tribes of North America.

For instance, movement in a Cherokee sacred circle is always counter-clockwise. Movement within the sacred circles of some other American Indian tribes such as the Lakota (Sioux) is clock-wise.

Houston told us that Naiki informed him of why counter-clockwise movement for the Cherokee. She said that imagine yourself being the Creator and looking down upon our Mother Earth from the heavens above. You would observe our Mother Earth turning counter-clockwise because the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Houston asked, "Don't you find that quite ironic…my ancestors knew this and that the earth was a sphere back when the Europeans thought the earth was flat and the center of the universe?"

Another difference that Houston has brought to our attention is the sweat lodge. The sweat lodge is a very sacred purification ceremony performed by most of our northwest Native American tribes. According to Houston this is not the case with the Cherokee even though some of the Cherokee tribes did have sweat lodges, mainly to prepare for the hunt.

With the Cherokee, purification has always been "going unto water." The Purification ceremony by the Cherokee was always observed by bathing in pure spring water, the closer to the head of the spring the better. Again Houston states, "It is really amazing how close this is to Christian baptism." Perhaps a revealing of one Creator that came to each people in their own way in a way they would understand. Again, Houston says that all this is from the wisdom he has gained from Naiki, his medicine woman.

We, the residents of Amboy will miss Houston and his tribal culture knowledge when he closes Primitive Accents and begins his sacred spirit quest and his venture back to his ancestral roots and home land. We all wish him well and will never forget what he has contributed to Amboy.
