Altered Universe Found this while surfing around, FWIW:

Altered Universe - The ultimate Altered Reality experience will be gained through this concept MMORPG where the question of "what if?" finally finds some consolation. Live the life you always wanted to. Blend fiction and fairy tales with reality. Be part of a culture that isn't afraid to be, and not one that is handed down generation after generation without questioning. This game presents the biggest challenges that a game design company could meet.
And from there forum: www.altereduniverse.com
Looks like it could be a long way off happening...

I've had a bit of a dig I've had a bit of a dig and I found these things-
http://www.altereduniverse.com/images/
Things used on the index page:
http://www.altereduniverse.com/images/background.bmp
http://www.altereduniverse.com/images/startanewcity.gif
Things not used directly:
http://www.altereduniverse.com/images/startanewcity.gif.LCK
The file contains this string - "Mitesh Shah (alteredu)||teshshah@hotmail.com"
and
http://www.altereduniverse.com/images/_notes/background.bmp.mno
which contains the following xml:
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<info>
<infoitem key="fw_source" value="/png/background.png" />
</info>
Dunno what it refers to though, as there doesn't seem to be any /png directory available.
But now there is an email address - teshshahSPLAT hotmail.com

It's a damn scary thing how fast one can be found out about in this community.

Gotta say, honestly, that it's one reason Id never want to consider being a PM. I might be able to think about a game concept, but setting it up seems to be an invitation for the brightest/hackiest/unpredictablest folks to come after me with all ports open, looking for blood.

I agree I spent a bunch of money myself in getting a server and all these things for AWARE, then I found out that it was WAY to easy to hack. So I just decided to purchase web hosting instead. Hopefully that will protect me a bit. I do understand I will lose a little quality, but hey I am not going to have some kind of server meltdown.
What worries me most is the game shuts down and cannot continue due to technical problems on my end. So hopefully my solution is hack it and I will find another web hoster. And they will have to fight legal issues with my web hosting company.

Be sure to run backups constantly, and keep them off the webserver site.
And hey, I didn't hack anything! All I did was grab the name from that file, and the email address in the DNS records and cross-reference them!

Agreed, you didn't hack anything at all. All of your discovery was done legally and with very little effort. I was just saying how scary it is that members of this community are that good at this sort of discovery process, and how quickly you can be discovered if you leave the provberbial 'electronic trail'.

It is indeed scary.
In the past when I wanted to find someone I went from knowing a first name and an interest of theirs to having an aerial photograph of their house within a few minutes.
(Obviously it helped that they had some sort of web presence)
Scary internet. Very scary.
