a few gems from the advertiser's info (publically available at http://www.goldenjigsaw.com/advertisers )

Quote:
There are 1,000 Golden Jigsaw pieces available for purchase. The first 10 pieces cost $120 each. Each subsequent block of ten will increase in cost per unit by $120, so the 2nd block will $240 each, the 3rd block will be $360 each, and so on. When the 98th block of ten is reached the cost per piece will have reached $11,760. The penultimate 10 pieces will be auctioned off individually, and the very last 10 pieces of the Golden Jigsaw will be donated to 10 worldwide charities. So, even the last pieces will cost no more than a single page press advert insertion into a consumer magazine!

<snip>

Once the competition is closed, advertisers will have preferential access to the database of players, all of whom will have already visited their site. All players will have opted in for marketing communications.

While I have to say it's an intriguing marketing idea, I think it's young and immature at this point - it needs refinement, research, industry insight, tehnical competence given its online context... It's a marketing team I think whose reach exceeds its grasp.

It's a nice gesture having the final 10 pieces being donated to charity websites, but ultimately, it's not a donation because no one is paying for those pieces. It's not their loss, because someone first has to offer to buy those last 10 pieces, otherwise they're not losing or giving anything. The charity sites would get increased traffic for a short while, perhaps a couple of new customers... the $11,000 pieces, each worth less than a full page print ad, I don't think would be nearly as effective as a full page ad at that stage, since most people would just be looking to find the pieces.

But I guess it depends on what the sponsors' value in their own marketing technique... if hits are what matter, or they have a low expectation for web traffic to customer turnover, then perhaps a piece is worth $11,000 to them.

I just don't see this reaching its completion.

So it sounds like they are compiling the database for sale to anyone, with the advertisers getting a reduced rate on access.

On our arrival home we got pink moss & eric sank on a perm basis, german slob.

Any odd formatting to go with that?

yeah that clue was dumb. You don't have to solve all the clues, they don't point you to the page with the piece. It just tells you a general area to look. You could find it without solving the riddle.

And here I thought it might be more complex - that maybe you have to visit all the pages before the puzzle piece appears! Wouldn't that be nice... but nope
