Why does everyone assume Rob's leaving the next day? He comes in at night--probably close to midnight--and his friends throw a surprise party. Pretty inconsiderate if he really was leaving the next day.

There is absolutely nothing in the trailer that indicates when he's leaving, other than that it's soon. If you think the timing of his departure is significant, it's just speculation because the trailer doesn't provide this information.

Maybe we should be asking why the movie opens up with his party happening at the exact same time as the attack, and why the movie appears to focus on him.

I don't think it matters when he was leaving, just that I think the monster knew he was going to leave.

And hell if the monster is targetting him, Rob probably knows why,and therefore might react to the attack differently.
he was leaving the following day and here is why http://rialliance.net/test.html

This is going to be going to be crazy spec that I don't believe myself, but it's been knocking around in my head all day and it needs out.

Suppose at some point that the PMs do let Rob start listening to the chatter on his MySpace page and maybe interact a bit. People start telling him the gloom and doom, but he doesn't believe and says prove it. We say "Hey you're going to Japan and are going to have a surprise party the night before you go!" He'd say we could have found that out from any of a number of sources.

Then we say "OK, the magic 8-ball predicts that it will be 63 degrees on 1-18 at 12:32 am. Oh, and you will owe some guy $11." Time passes, shit hits the fan and Rob realizes he's in the middle of everything he's be warned about, thus the suspicious look.

OK, got that out, now flame away.

Flame? No, I will encourage.

Purhaps our meddling will cause the creation of an alternate future for RobCo at the time he becomes aware of us. Slusho in all of this could be some boutique frozen treat that only NYC is cool enough to have right now.

The 1-18-08 site could be the byproduct of a rift of all this. They appear as nonsence, at first, and then as more get displayed we get a bigger picture into their alt future.

Now [flame on]

love it...

love that theory... i think it would be a great way to make it interact with the real world... maybe not necesarily by responding to our msgs but maybe by saying someone stopped him in the street and told him what was gonna happen or something like that...

problem is is that the film is in production, and to be there the script and story would have to be pretty solid, yeah they can tweek it a bit but main story has to be there. it would be anice idea to have that interaction but it would have to have been done alot earlier to involve it.
i would imagine the myspace will, like someone else said, ignore the posts from non film characters and just converse betweeen themselves.

He'd become self-aware and cause the space time continuum to collapse, ending all existence as we know it. Smile

Probably how the movie ends.

Rob: After all that shit we had to go through, it was worth it because we made it out alive from that monster...
(Pause)
Rob
: OHMYGAWD! Someone warned me on myspace that this was going to happen!

Screen appears to collapse on itself, then in bright letters appears:

THE END! THANKS 4 WATCHING DUMBUTS! WAI TO MAKE ME RICH WHEN ALL I DID WAS GIVE YOU A SH** ENDING!
