If you were able to go to the site, you'd notice some discrepancies in the storyline:

- Triton has a compound on an island near the Phillipines.

- Divinus is an island that "rose from the sea" near Brazil, but no mention of it being a resort.

- Van Mantra is a revolutionary leader in the 23rd century.

If you download the fan kit you can see the races, including the "Seraph" and the "Ophanum" races.

I still don't know what to think. If this was to be the inevitable outcome, whi lead us on with clues for a game that didn't exist all the way to the last minute? This didn't create interest in buying the product... this created hatred.

But, at least there's some humor in it. From the EHWW comments:

Good marketing strategy, guys. That's *almost* a closed sale!

It's having issues.

Yeah-- slightly more traffic than they would have thought, though at the same time I think any of us could have told them a few days ago that whatever they thought they were going to get, they should expect to get double. Plus, there are a lot of angry people out there (some of them REALLY angry, which is almost disturbing) and so who knows, someone may actively be trying to swamp the site.

I agree that it'd be really neat if the story continued: since the game is set in the mid-21st century, they could continue to update the backstory of Divinus, Triton, and Van. I dunno if they will. You could always go to GenCon and suggest it.

I wouldn't be surprised if their "fans", so pleased with the result, are hitting them with an old fashioned DoS.

That's because what they were trying to do got hijacked by a large group of people who wanted to do something else.

It's like this.

My friend is a world-class puzzlemaster. He can solve a Rubik's cube in ten seconds. He can solve tavern puzzles, those magic rings-- anything he can get his hands on. One day he comes over and notices this object on my desk. He walks over, gives it a few twists, then starts to growl in frustration. A few more minutes go by until finally there is a loud "crack" as the object breaks in his hands.

"Dude, this is the stupidest manual puzzle I've ever seen," he says. "Whoever made this should get sued."

I can only shake my head. "That's because it's not a manual puzzle. It's a paperweight."

I seriously doubt that EHWR was supposed to be what it became. It wasn't meant to dovetail off Cloverfield and end up here. That was coincidental. The "trailhead" was on gaming websites, not here. This wasn't an ARG. It was ARG-ish, sure-- but mostly people thought it was an ARG because people in this community made it one. And I hope that MSL or Red understands what they accidentally did, and maybe they'll even try to do more, to continue the story they started. I really hope they do, because it's very cool.

But for a large community of ARGers to say "well, I will never buy this tabletop RPG" is kind of silly. I doubt they were trying to get you to buy it. This community adopted EHWR as something it may never have been. I'm glad this happened, actually, because I never would have found Unfiction otherwise and I'm glad I did. I'd never heard of an ARG before Ethan Haas came down the pike. Lots of people have sad the same thing.

Instead of being pissed that a tabletop RPG was not an ARG, maybe people should be happy that EHWR brought dozens of new registrations to this community.

It wasn't an ARG after all...?

I'm all for the idea that Mind Storm Labs and RedFaction (or whatever) might not have been trying to start an ARG, and their ehwr.com website was just a miniature promotional thing for a paper-and-dice RPG...but then, why the extra stuff? Why design that kind of promotion that, ultimately, led to other things? If it was just a promotion, wouldn't ehwr.com have been enough?

I'm afraid I don't remember how we found ourselves looking at tritonenterprises.net or divinusvacations.net, but the fact that they have been deemed in game, coupled with the extremely (to me) interesting emails coming from Triton and Kellie Graham, made it feel like there was something deeper going on. "We're building the future on a far greater vision"...man, that had potential! And again, I was given a wonderful trip down memory lane after Kellie's description of why the security lockdown had taken place.

So, inadvertently or not, and due to the meddling of a group of over-zealous beasters, MSL has opened a can of worms that they should feel obliged to now spoon into. They may not convince anyone on the unforums to dash out and start playing the game, but word of mouth creates buzz, and that creates sales. The very fact that any single one of us might mention this ridiculous rabbit hole turned pothole could, potentially, create success for a startup company out of nowhere.

I will, personally, wait and see. I am trying to believe that there is something more, here. Something about Triton, and/or Divinus, and/or (I don't care if it's OOG or IG) ckrox. I have to join what appears to be popular opinion, however, and state that I have no interest in another tabletop RPG, and even if this plays out to be an event that takes the netterweb by storm, I won't be playing Alpha Omega.

(BTW, I had modified my signature before the post appeared containing the quote I paraphrased... Cool )

Edit: and...my sig isn't appearing, so never mind. Razz

Triton was found because the domain record for ethanhaaswasright.com told us to look there.

The promotion itself never seemed to pull the trigger on the divinusvacations.com site. I had found it by looking up what other domains were on the Mind Storm Labs server, and its URL was, ultimately, somthing that could be deduced via trial and error from Triton telling us that Divinus was a resort. It did, at some point, have a reservations@ auto-responder up.

And the "seraphophanum.com" link as well, which now I assume will be for something directly a part of the game.

Maybe they'll just hit the big "reset" button and start another game entirely?

The thing I said before

Knew I could count on you, b!X. Very Happy

But where does that leave us? I know there was some discussion, at one point, as to whether or not information gleaned by looking up the domain records for IG sites was valid or not...given that this is how this particular experience progressed (and some of the feelings posted by users here) I'm willing to go with the idea that it was a necessary step. So MSL went to the trouble of giving us Triton (I beg you, someone, PLEASE tell me you immediately thought of the beginning of Half Life when you got Kellie's first autoreply!) and didn't go anywhere with it. Part of my problem in this whole thing has been that I'm only really looking into this while I'm at work, and I have the abysmal bad luck to lack the ability to view pdfs. In other words, I never actually looked at the press release Triton put out, which is why I was confused about Divinus.

I dunno, mates. I'm kind of feeling like the stepchild who wouldn't die, here...like Mind Storm either willfully decided to take advantage of a community of people who would read more into this than was meant to be read, or else they were blissfully ignorant of the very concept of an ARG (not too far from the realm of possibility, given the number of posts on these forums where the first line is "never head of ARG before, this looks fun") and simply didn't realize that their pothole would be looked at as a rabbit hole.

Also, I type too much. Sorry for that!

Fan Kit

How are we supposed to use the fan kit.

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but I haven't a clue. Confused

Are we supposed to start a blog on blogger.com or something within the AO site?

Most companies design fan kits for people to use to add the theme of the product to their website... also the AO one has alot of nifty artwork in it

You mean this?

Code:
<meta name="Description" content="Content about Jack Here">
<meta name="keywords" content="jacks keywords here">

That's just someone who didn't replace the default meta tags with their own content when putting the new version of the site up.

why go live now?

I don't understand why AO would go live now, without any products or character creation. My question is, why go to all this trouble to launch an idea (or website or game) that is not complete. Isn't the point of the ARGesque marketing to raise interest? Going live without a complete product is counterproductive. At 4am last night I prolly would have bought something because I was following everything so closely and now that I have slept my interest has waned.
