I was kidding

I should have added a smiley to that post, I was joking about an almost solid black poster being appealing.

You want HOW MUCH for the poster?
My road trip to Frank and Son in search of the "Monstrous" poster

After reading all the threads across the net this week the location of where the "Monstrous/Cloverfield" movie poster was leaked at, I went down to the Frank and Son Show today when they just opened to try and buy a poster.
The vendor was supposedly a heavyset named Luanna Jo Brown who has a permanent poster store/stall there.

The Frank and Son's website had a photo of the booth in the Vendor section with a pic of her.

I indeed found the booth, it's by the huge truck doors in the middle and has a black cage-like thing around it.

The pic on the Frank and Son website of the lady above must be kinda old since she looks like twenty years older and six stone larger in person.

Anyway, I tried to take a quick picture of the stall and of the poster to post for everyone, but the same giant linebacker sized woman ran up to me with her hand covering my camera and told me, "No photos of my booth." I asked her why, I could not, and she got up inches from my face and spat out, "Because I said so, that's why!"
She's a real nice lady, I'm sure she does a lot of repeat business with such a charming personality like that.

I asked if her name was Luanna and she said, "It's Lou."
Bingo! This was the infamous "poster leaker". Also FYI, the original pics that Oinkage posted (shown below) were most assuredly from this stall, as I immediately recognized the backgrounds (flood lights, wooden paneling and the yellow price stickers on all of the posters)

I asked her about the "Cloverfield/1-18-08" posters and she said she just got them in a few weeks prior and they were $100.00!

Yes, a hundred frackin dollars! That sum was "terrifying" to my fanboy ears. I politely mentioned the same poster "at this very stall" was marked $15.00 not a week ago. She said, "Take it or leave it."

I countered that the price was pretty steep considering that Paramount was handing out four versions of the exact same poster image away [for free] at the Comic Con and she got huffy and said "You ever heard of supply and demand?" Really funny, I've never heard that concept before. She then added that she didn't care since one way or the other she's putting most of them on evilbay anyway.

I asked her if she knew where the posters came from, but did not mention to her the rumor that the ones she were selling were ill-gotten goods from a studio print shop back door and she brushed me off angrily and said, "What does it matter where they came from? They came from the studio. Do you want one or not?" I looked at the poster very carefully. Since this "Monstrous" lady wouldn't let me take a photo, I can only report that it does have the Paramount logo on the right bottom, the date, and the "Bad Robot" production logo on the left corner[that logo was covered up in the original picture with the yellow $15.00 price sticker thing]. Also, in tiny, tiny grey/white on the bottom edge they say "Property of Paramount Pictures". It looks legit, but yikes.

There is simply no way I was going to pay that much for it, and I left. I would have happily paid even $30.00 due to the whole "supply and demand" thing she so rudely mentioned since I don't do evilbay and few other options for getting one of these posters. But if they are in fact "HOT" items, I'd rather not own it for fear of reprisals and more importantly, I refuse to fill the pockets of some "Furiously" ill-mannered and greedy indoor swap-meet merchant like this lady. I don't know how she stays in business, honestly. She was unbelievably rude, not just to me, but to other people asking her similar questions in the shop.

Forgive me this rant, but I am bummed out and totally venting here. I drove all the way from Oxnard to get a poster and was slapped in the face with the female(?) version of Gordon Gecko, and going home empty handed with a blank space on my wall where the poster was supposed to hang.[/i]

AlternateRealityGaming, you shouldn't feel you had to pay $100 for the poster, that is unbelievable and frankly extortion.

It would appear that the early stories about 'Lou', certainly as to her character were accurate.

Supply and demand my ass, she's just trying to milk us fans until the posters go into major production.

I say wait until we're closer to the movie and then try get them, I bet you you could probably pick one up for $5 by then.

What about the morse code on the top of the 1-18-08.com page? M and T, right? What if those have something to do with Monstrous and Terrifying?

Screw it.

You can probably get a hires enough image of the poster online that you can print out a nice 11x17 version.

Who the hell needs the giant poster anyway? And once the movie is out there will be more on the market.

Boorish Shop Owner Is Rude To Everyone
Now I don't feel so bad...

I don't feel quite so personally insulted by my treatment at this shop anymore. I almost thought I was treated poorly because I was English.

This morning, a gentleman sent me an email who claims to be a collectible seller who owns a nearby stall to this "Lou/Luanna Jo Brown" poster stall and urges me not to take her rudeness personally. She is notorious for being a complete horse's arse to everyone (other stall staff and shop customers alike).

He says that those at the Frank And Son shop who know her personally try to be polite to her, but no one can stand her, and feel her loathsome attitude towards customers is bad for everyone's business and gives the entire venue itself a poor reputation.

As an aside, he said that she was publicly arrested some years ago at her stall for some type of piracy issue, (he was not sure of the exact charge) but I will look it up in court records when I have a moment). Whether these facts are veritable or not, I am certainly glad I did not buy that poster and was not singled out for boorish treatment by her.

UPDATE

Indeed, I have found that he was correct. Police records show that Luanna Jo Brown was arrested by the Walnut Sheriff's Department at the Frank and Son Collectible Show on 11/19/2003.

She was charged with Felony possession of items with intent to forge/counterfeit 475(A)PC. She later pleaded Guilty to a slightly lesser charge of violation of 350(A)(1)PC - Sale of less than 1000 items Of counterfeit or trademarked material on 6/08/2004.

One could assume since this conviction is so recent she is possibly on some type of probation. So why is she selling either counterfeited or stolen studio property as of yesterday?

Back when the poster discovery at her stall was still fresh, someone sent a message to one of the Cloverfield web pages offering an explanation as to 'Lou's character and how she got them, mentioning that she has had a hand in selling pirated movies.

So hearing she's been arrested for piracy comes as no real surprise.

Regardless of that, I'm confident that in a few months you'll have the ability to buy one of the posters for a much more reasonable price. Not only that but I'm confident you'll be able to choose which of the tantelizing captions is displayed on yours. Smile
