Pirate Master Really Cut Adrift
Cheryl Kosewicz Found Dead

I'm not entirely sure what to make of this. At first glance, of course, it's all legit and on the up and up and is very much a tragic event. The tragic event of which I speak is this:

CBS's now cancelled show Pirate Masters has very recently had one of the pirates (previously voted off the ship) found dead in her home, interestingly about a month after her long time boyfriend "Ryan O'Neil" committed suicide. It's been reported she committed suicide, however, the full details have yet to be released and it's still under investigation.

I'd been into Pirate Masters - just my kinda theme despite not being a huge fan of reality tv. I started watching on Thursdays and then suddenly it's not on Thursdays so I decided to find a site for it online - where I was actually relieved the site had up full length episode vids of each one so far - along with yet another notice CBS changed it from Thursdays to Tuesdays. I watched only once on Tuesday and then last week it's not on even then. I go back to the site to discover, oddly, that right in the middle of it, it's A) been cancelled and B) now exclusively online. WTF? There were only 5 left, why cancel it? It really wasn't that bad of a show....it's cooler than Big Brother.

Anyway, so I checked it out tonight to see the next one and while having a screwy video, opened another page to browse their forums while the video reloaded and I first spotted 3 posts from people offering their sentiments for one of the pirates, Cheryl, who'd died at some point.

Obviously I was concerned and curious so went looking for more information on what happened to her (but for the record, she was my choice to get booted right out the gate which did make me feel a little guilty). Well, since it's a CBS show, I went to more mainstream news sites and looked around, found absolutely nothing. It amounted at this point to just typing her name in search and picking up indy sites that mentioned it. In one, it was noted that other of the pirates had their own myspace pages, so I checked out a few of theirs and that's when that nagging sensation went off something's a little screwy here.

The first thing that I couldn't help notice was - despite how educated they appeared in video, the crap they wrote on their MS pages seemed completely illiterate. I'm not talking careless typos - I mean a complete misuse of the english language. As it happened, Cheryl was a prosecuting attorney, yet many places she'd commented or written had glaringly wrong spelling errors.

The next thing I noticed was that Cheryl's last login was July 26th. She left a comment for Ben (a fellow pirate) on July 25th. The condolences begin on each of their pages July 28. From fans and pirates alike.

However, one of the pirates, Nessa (who got voted off "this week's episode finally), posts on Joy's MS page on July 28th

Jul 28 2007 2:54A

I LOVE YOU SO MUCH MY LITTLE SIS. STAY STRONG, WE PIRATES ARE A FAMILY FOR LIFE. XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO Lil P.

And on Ben's:

All I can say is... damn. WTF.... We all have to be there for each other... Tragic time for all of us... Pirate family for life. Much love Fagan, m'dear

I haven't so far rooted out the actual date yet that Cheryl is found dead or when she died - I'm sure I will, just haven't yet in what I've found - but I figure it's July 27th and it's announced almost too quietly that day and fans are aware of it the next day. Some of the comments left between pirates and by 'fans' just seem a little screwy to me. Nessa's in particular is curious - there seems to be no genuine emotion there, (then again, she was kinda a bitch anyway). Her comment to Joy on the 28th, a day later (meaning pirates would've been notified before general public via CBS) seemed a little casual, not addressing it directly, while Joy's (most illiterate) blog for July 28 at 5:44am is wrought with anguish.

If it's legit, so be it, nevermind....but where my little flag went off making me curious was that Cheryl managed to leave a comment on her own MS page. I've tried to do that with every MS page I've had and still cannot leave a comment on my own page - I get errors. I even logged into my own and tried to be sure and get an error.

Here are the associated links to what I've seen so far, including the myspace sites....if you're looking to spare your brain from the cloverfield meltdown, have a look at the pirate masters and see if it looks right to you. If it turns out this is legit, so be it - I blame Slusho Zoom for this distraction ;-p

PS

I think the thing that's nagging me here is that this is all extremely recent - within 4 days but Cheryl is reported to have committed suicide.

Why log in to MySpace the day before? Aside from the typically inaccurate presumption people grieve differently, we're not talking grief. If she was suicidal - and nothing about any of her comments seemed to sugges it, let alone any of her "close friends" - she would be depressed as a rule and not the exception. It seems to me that there would've been one of two possible scenarios under legit *suicidal* depression:

A) myspace would be the farthest shit from her mind, as she'd be focused entirely on her ways and means of offing herself and likely she would not bother with it, as it's myspace. It isn't like she got on there leading up to it reaching out or making curiously depressive comments.

B) she would log in to just scrap the site, say goodbye and delete everything on it since if she's not gonna be here, no point in keeping myspace online.

Evidently this was a shock to everyone - which suggests she wasn't hinting at it one way or the other (which is also suspect), so her logging into myspace page of all things the day before she's found dead just isn't gelling.

Two other things I stumbled over on the PM site raised the question - were these actual people or was this always a character driven 'reality' show? In Azmyth's profile I was surprised at first, and then found that odd, to learn that he had a bit part in Pirates 3 - in the intro scene of the line of folks being lead to the gallos - he was in line. I have seen Pirates 3 and don't recall that guy in it. Could be makeup, but still.

Two comments regarding Cheryl's suicide suggested a rumor (tho I haven't found where that rumor is) that she hung herself, and another that her boyfriend hung himself.

The other one was a few posts suggesting these were always *characters* pretending to be real people on a reality tv show called Pirate Masters. One of the posts mentioned something about the CBS writers having written JoeDon out awhile back and they weren't happy about it. I wasn't sure which one of us missed the punchline on reality tv shows....I was always under the assumption it was actual people in reality based scenarios, not characters playing roles of such.

So all this slammed together and raised a flag. If they are characters, then nobody actually died in rl....and there would be something amiss here with one of them being found dead 4 days ago....and why CBS took the show off tv and put it exclusively online.

It's odd that it hasn't gotten much play in the news, but you get a fair number of hits on her death in google news, including the TV station in her town. And a variety of smaller newspapers that presumably checked before they published, plus TMZ. I think it's real. Maybe CBS is playing it down to avoid looking like they would try to profit from the publicity her death would bring?

This is the one in the wikipedia article. It seems to be a local one, to her I mean. That one and another one from Reno peg her as a deputy district attorney first and a reality show contestant second. Since I'm nowhere near there, I have no idea how legit these ones actually are, but they seem to be the real thing. The only thing that bothers me is that very few of the sites that come up on search agree on the date. But that can be explained away by the fact that it's the internet. It's also weird that the big news guys haven't picked it up. Maybe the show wasn't popular enough.

And I guess maybe the sentiment in the myspace stuff seemed fake cause it was. They could have just been acting how they thought they were supposed to act.

That's just my take on it. I could easily be wrong. I haven't developed any ARG senses yet.

This is not a game. . . seriously.

This person commited suicide only July 27. Try a serach on yahoo or google for "cheryl kosewicz" suicide. I can't account for the grammar and spelling of MySpace users, but before we start contacting bereaved friends and family members, trying to ferret out a rabbit hole, it's best we take a second t oseparate 'realtiy' from 'alterante reality.'

Her death follows a bout of depression following the suicide of her boyfriend two months ago (May07) and the recent cancellation of reality show Pirate Master, in which she starred.

In a posting on her MySpace website page at the end of June (28Jun07), Kosewicz wrote, "Truthfully, I've lost the strong Cheryl and I'm just floating around lost.

"And this frik'n show doesn't help because it was such a contention between Ryan and I and plus its not getting good reviews."

Sorry to hear all of this. I checked the Wiki article and right under the death announcement of Cheryl, it says "Contestant Azmyth Kaminski was on the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, where he was being hung". Odd to mention being hung. Also it sounds a little strange - he was an actor? I thought he was an average everyday person recruited for the show.

Well it was at the start where a lot of people were hung. You don't have to be an actor to be cast as an extra. Sometimes you just have to show up.

alot of actors go on reality tv shows claiming to be a regular joe shmoe so people can relate to them, rather than have people think they are there only to further their own careers.

i agree with zizka though. if this is real, the last thing anyone involved would want is random people trying to contact them asking if its a game.

the circumstances are suspect though, i agree.

it is possible she was bipolar though, which would explain how she could go on my space one second, and kill herself the next. i know plenty of bipolars who are happy go lucky one second and want to die an hour later. plus the fact that her boyfriend killed himself probably didnt help it much.

well thats my two cents! ::steps off soapbox:: later people

Thanks for the feedback. Even I don't see anything that looks like an actual "trail" - this was more that the event being portrayed just didn't seem too legit on its surface.

I am a little curious why CBS would cancel it. I watched the full episode videos in a few hours early on and was totally into it. It was amazingly well done, well thought out puzzles or challenges, and they didn't do that lame ego BS those on Big Brother do. The contestants on PM had to do some rugged stuff....and the players seemed to have the intrigue about them as far as playing this game for all it's worth. Plus, it was just fun to watch. It originally aired May 31 this year. If you got a few hours to kill, pull up the videos and watch - for a reality tv show, it really sailed over most of them out there in being worth watching. CBS is on drugs.

After a few shows, suddenly CBS changes nights and then BAM it's exclusively online. A week later - last one, suddenly it's just cancelled. A couple days later, this contestant is found dead.

I think it was Joy's ms page where someone said they heard a rumor she hanged herself. Several other player pages had references to people hanging themselves. Even Cameron Daddo (host, MC guy) has a demo reel on his ms page and right off the mark he's playing a character in a courtroom talking about his wife hanging herself.

Not all of the players have ms pages but it was just curious to me that very few of the ones who did even mentioned it. Nessa posted on three, Cameron and the CBS ms page mention it, Joy's did. The others not a word mentioned.

Here's her comment to Ben on the 25th of July:

Jul 25 2007 7:20A

Just checking in with my favorite SC man! No matters what happens with the show you are the best and I'm so glad we made the bond we did......your life has just begun and you will prosper no matter what.....keep that beautiful smile and be well, love CherylK

Two things, one mentioned before: she leaves a comment on her own page.

Jun 23 2007 10:59A

why thank you my beautiful African Sister......love you lots, ck

Maybe ms changed things up but since I've had one, you don't get to make comments on your own comments section.

On a related note, she has a few comments from people sending her sentiments on her loss regarding the show being canceled. But the show's been taped already and she got booted off early on...so she had no vested interest in whether the show made it or not.

Joy posted this:

Jul 17 2007 12:09P

okay....yes new profile update. very bright and eye catching.love you prepare for our jungle book fake adventure. AHAHHHA...boy this should be interesting

---because Cheryl updated her ms page, revamped it to the lime green thing. She's got a lot of pics, no comments but one from Joy, and if someone was to ask me to pick out the person who committed suicide, I can make a safe bet I wouldn't have picked her. Maybe that's more what it is and not so much "gameish" is that she doesn't quite fit the "profile" Rolling Eyes of someone suicidally depressed. She has no blogs up but was active on her page since her bf committed suicide - he's the love of her life and she gives that brief mention in passing....while she's girl pals with Joy and Joy blogs with this anguish. She just didn't show any of the indicators that ARE ALWAYS there.

Outside that, it's been a week, if they suspect suicide why are they still investigating it? Could be there is actually foul play (in reality here) and a suicide was staged, hence the continued investigation. There's a good reason they didn't close it with a suicide. So maybe that's where the naggy thing is coming from...

The other one is this....if she's dead, how come her last login shows 8-1-08? If it's someone running it, why not mention that - make a blog, thank the supporters and explain the creepy login. Nothing's been changed but one thing: her mood being "crushed"....

It's little things like that that just make me get that naggy feeling.

This is.... creepy.
Then again, it could be that someone else just logged in to her myspace (say a friend or family member).
The self comment is really strange, though. Like that time that psycho in the Wyoming Incident deleted posts that were impossible to delete (ARG or no, the PM of that crap was insane and very, very, evil).
If it's really and trailhead, then I'm in.... but with immense caution. I'm glad I missed the Wyoming Incident. Hope this isn't the same thing....

CV - sorry, this would NOT be any trailhead for any ARG. This is from a now-cancelled TV show and it is either a real life tragedy or a very cruel cry for attention.

Further digging along from people posting on her comments:

Azzie... wtf is going on in this world...?! I swear the show is cursed... First CBS bullshit then poor Cheryl... aaaaaaaa Sad
And her description is now "Cheryl K.... YOU ARE MISSED Sad....." When did she get to be such friends with Cheryl? Guess after the show was taped.
Interesting, here is a post by Cheryl on Nessa's comments:

Truthfully, I've lost the strong Cherl and I'm just floating around lost. And this frik'n show doesn't help because it was such a contention between Ryan and I and plus its not getting good reviews.....then I made National Enquirer today so I'm just hitting it big....the hits keep on coming.

Sorry you couldn't make it to Vegas. It was a blast. Lets plan another trip in August - for one of the last shows....what do you think?

She made the National Enquirer? I can't find anything on the NE's website. Note that was that posted in the evening. Does Nessa have to approve comments and that one was only approved in the evening after the news? Because Nessa posted this one on Ben's page

I read the counterpoints and had to agree....then come across this and dammit!! Heheh.

On Cheryl's page on July 24, the 3rd comment down is from a Melissa. So I checked hers out and she's got two from Cheryl on July 24 + 25 - again, this would be 2 days before her apparent suicide:

----
CHERYL K Jul 25 2007 6:56A

Don't forget you can still watch on CBS.com under Pirate Master. And at least watch the final episode to see what revenge I can exact!!!!

CHERYL K Jul 24 2007 5:41P

Thanks for your caring thoughts. And CBS isn't my pal right now.....how can Mark Burnett the king of reality shows fuck this one up.......all I have to say is I better get paid!

----

I know. I am totally capable of agreeing that obviously "they" would probably not, or at best, did not, air all her dirty laundry or back history and very well just opted to not show that side of things...wanting intervention or making a comment about facing the day or staying strong did not strike me as the evidence of bubbling suicidal tendencies as much as all purpose keep yer head up yay strong grrls rulez sort of thing - they've done that all along. It's also greatly outweighed by the rest of the comments sprinkled on friends pages that she was a little more together and capable, even if there was hard trying days of pain.

Anyway, ok I won't keep bumping this - at this point I'm not so much suspicious she's not dead as much as I tend to consider that if she is dead it doesn't not seem to be self inflicted so I hope they will continue investigating it to be sure....and I say that with a disclaimer of recognizing I'm not personally privy to her personal business or past details. She could've been in therapy for it for all I know - the depictions of her have been distictly mentally stable is what I'm getting at.

Okay...I'm done....but if anymore pirates come up dead then I'm resurrecting this cause NOT....that would be a little too coincidental!

Back to Slusho and slamming my head against the wall!
