tmerch...Just a thought. Have you considered that you're being invited "in" because you are, in many ways similar to the Cloverfield Kids? (not that I'm insinuating you're a vapid, hipster, wiccan swinger who drinks like a fish Smile ) Looking at your profile...you're 26, educated, extremely attractive...you could slide right into the cast of this movie or photos of this group of friends and nobody'd bat an eye.

Whatever happens taradactyl, watch out for that Lascano chick...she destroyed the dinosaurs. Wink

My Space Pics...

The pics of them on the myspace pages well, look close enough, sorta kinda...I've seen PLENTY of fake Myspace sites to not make me 100% sure, but within the context of this viral thingy...it's all good.
But as far as this being an AGR...not sure.

Dammit Slusho! site.........reveal the true path!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've so far only been friended by Jamie, although both Lil and HUD have answered messages I sent them.

I tried to create a cross-character interaction, but that hasn't worked so far. I've been approaching each character with a slightly different take on their likes/dislikes/places or things of interest.

Oh, and yeah--you can see that the comments -are- from people who've been friended BUT still moderated. My comment's on Jamie's page as of yesterday.

UnseenPresence

Oh--and Hi, folks. Finally decided I'd actually register for unfiction.

More thoughts on the Myspace...

I've been watching the threads here for a few days, now, since just before Comic-Con, and I'm -really- not sure yet what the purpose of these myspace accounts is. Not in a general (what is the use of Myspace) way...but for this particular film.

The level of interaction I'm seeing (and that people here are reporting) is both VERY high...and at the same time VERY sporadic.

For instance, I don't know what anyone else has done, but I've sent messages to every character (except LenaDia, who you can't send a message to--at least not directly). Some of the messages have had responses, while others are listed as having been read and some merely as having been sent.

Which is fantastic, at some level--as that's what happens with 'normal' people and Myspace. I've still got everyone pending as a friend except Jamie, which is also certainly possible.

But then we're all getting some -really- fascinating interactions in email. Some of the characters are chatty, some are brief. Some seem more interested in what some random person says and some less. My comment about Ithaca's waterfalls (which they really do have) and their terrible down-town movie theater (which was, at least, terrible when I was there back in the 80's) are both accurate AND the kind of thing that should go through in the comment section to make it seem more like a 'real' person.

And yet, the interactions are sporadic--some of us have been friended several times, some once, some none, and even now a report of one requesting the other way.

So -is- the goal here to make these characters as living, breathing, and "real" as possible? That would argue against an ARG concept...and more for an actual Interactive Experience. Something JJ is certainly not averse to doing.

And actually something that might well be in line with what Abrams told Harry Knowles over at AICN--wasn't his comment something along the lines of 'we're doing some very intereting things on the web'?

Or is it simply a case of some poor intern who's supposed to be 'playing' all the characters and simply can only do so much at a time?

I'm very, very unclear as to where this is going so far...and very interested to see where that turns out to be.

Indeed that's the exact thing I was trying to convey here.....we need seperate threads for these responses so we can all honestly confirm or deny all of this...

Are these responses the same for everyone? Are they bot responses?
Bot-like responses? All unique?

Who was contacted/friended by whom in the "cast of characters"...until I see all of that...I will always say that MySpace is a complete distraction from the true puzzle, if such a puzzle exists, cause I am not completely convinced this is a true ARG.

peace.

UnseenPresence & Fignut: Amen to all of that!

I HOPE this is the start of something more - in the way of an actual game. Even if it's not, it's still brilliant marketing (...the movie better kick some serious ass, though).

What do you think it would take to confirm things one way or the other?

And, I think new threads - to post any interactions w/the 7 - would be helpful. But, we gotta stick to it - we don't want 7 more threads of speculation about anything remotely related to the movie. Shocked

Once again: kudos to the sober assessment of all this!

Pondering the myspace angle...

Has anyone seen the movie ExisTenZ?
In that movie, there is a game of sorts, and computer generated characters will interact with you in a casual way until you ask them a trigger question that generates a response that gets you further in the game.
I think a strategy like that should be applied here.

I think the people with the best chance of establishing a rapport with the characters are people who are like them (or pretend to be like them - remember, this is AR. If they can create fake people, so can we).

Since I despise myspace and would rather not go into it, I'm suggesting this method to you. Put up a fake myspace. pretend you are a mid-twenties hipster, and you're moving to New York soon. You like the same movies, books, and music as these guys, and you are attractive (I'd go with hot female to attract Rob personally, but whatever). Notice how detailed Lily's response was to the question about House of Leaves? That's because that question played in to her character, and got a detailed response.

I say we should play by their rules. Try to outfake the fakers.

Bwah!! Now that's funny. I hadn't considered your point about being "invited 'in'"...and it's an interesting perspective, but part of me hopes it's not true. I mean, I'd hate to think that this is some kind of bizarro high school popularity contest - but who am I kidding, we ARE talking about MySpace here.

I've sent messages to the other characters re: mundane things like The Office and music, hoping to spawn some more interaction. I'll let you know if anything comes of it!

PS: Blue K, quit it with the flattery; you're making me blush!

ETA: HetMasteen, I like your angle! I can try the "moving to NYC" approach if I get any replies. Which guy was it that was talking about reviewing what sounded like technical diagrams? Maybe I can ask where they work and if they need any SW geeks...

IF SOMEONE COULD SEND A MESSAGE ASKING HOW THE FRIENDS MET, THAT WOULD BE GREAT.

Sorry for posting in caps, but I think this could be a really good question to ask.

OOG Friends hiding IG Friends?

Hey everyone... first time posting so go easy on me Smile

I was justing thinking that maybe part of the reason "the 7" have started accepting random friend requests now is to mask the fact that they will also be adding more IG myspace profiles of other characters from the film.

Obviously, if anyone adds people to their top friends, that's easy enough to pick out, but if they're just lost in the mix, it seems the easiest way to find them is through the person with the least number of friends. (I wouldn't want to go thru Jamie's 700+, that's for sure!)

Unfortunately, I think you may be right about more characters popping up. Ouch, I'm not looking forward to the "Are they IG, or OOG?" conversations, and the subsequent "Hey, I think they are/aren't.-
We already talked about that. Use the search feature" threads.

I call 'em how I see 'em. Very Happy

As far as I have seen (feel free to correct me on this), tmerch is the first (and maybe the only...at least on this board) person who's received an add request from an in-game character. It may be too early to draw conclusions, but my gut tells me that these kind of invites are going to be fairly rare.

Logistically, it makes a a lot of sense. You'd need a platoon of PM's to keep up with the commentary of the thousands of friends that will end up being added. It's just not feasible. On the other hand, a small group of hand-picked (character requested) players would provide a manageable format through which the PM's could communicate on a much more familiar, personal level. Of course, the rest of us would have to "live the game" vicariously, as a team of sorts, though the chosen ones (Team Tmerch?...Team TaraDactyl!!! there could be t-shirts, mugs, floor mats... Smile ) but that's not a problem. The PM's know that we communicate through these boards.

This kind of thing is not without precedent. For example, in the game Who is Benjamin Stove, actual players were recruited to be moderators on the main character's message board. They remained players, but they enjoyed an increased level pf participation.

If nothing else, you'll always be able to say "First!", tmerch. Very Happy
