Absolute silence from all IG characters for over a week; no progress on that cypher, which seems to be the only possible way forward at the moment . . .

This looks stalled at best. Perhaps the story tellers/PMs are trying to find a new arena for game play.

I think the timing of everything IG/OOG is suspicious in and OOG sort of way: 127 goes up, people express concerns about violating the spirit (and TOS) of UF, 127 goes down, FoF changes, Production Blog explains intent of 127. . . *Then* the weirdest thing, several updates on the production blog were deleted (all mentions of exclusion and information control, gone).

So what I'm saying is, I have no idea what's going on. For the purposes of moving forward with this story, all I can think of is grinding on that cypher or looking again at the items in the box, including the business card, but I have to wonder what point there is, since all of hte IG characters seem to have gone to ground.

Sorry, been too busy to do much more than drop in the thread for updates. Not that anything's happened. Anyway, I haven't gotten around to updating the summary. It looks like Coffeebean collated the most recent evidence, so that's a start.

Maybe we can kick the tires a bit. How about emailing Germain and asking for an update on the success of Tristan's mission? He should've have reached J2 several days ago.

Also ask about the change to passwords on the FoF site.

The Despoiler site says it's subject to a modified version of the forum's TOS. PMs and IG characters can post there? Nice to have a wiki-tool/clearinghouse available, but doesn't really help when we have an IG opponent.

There is a website for Mike the Poet, but he's located in Denmark or Sweden--site is in Danish or Swedish, go figure. Domain registered in '06, for that matter. Probably unaffiliated.

There's also a spoken word artist called Mike the Poet in L.A. Apparently his most famous work is called "I'm alive in L.A.". He has a myspace page.

Straw Grasping

Pretty sure it's Swedish. WhoIs said the server is a .se network. Language tools say it's >80% likelihood Swedish.

Finnish would be a clue, given the map of Finland in Allan's box and the Finnish Saarinen character.

No other luck digging the Mike/raju runoilija angle. Don't have a convenient way to check the number that was on the card, either. Other than the fact that international Yellowpages identified the first few digits as working for Finland, as I noted about 10 pages ago. I can't seem to confirm that now. The numbers are not valid for a credit card.

The 1st 4 numbers and 2nd 4 numbers show up on a Geocities listing for Finland routes. The 3rd and 4th sets do not.

I tried searching for images similar to the 'cafe specialty coffee' thing on the flipside of the card, no dice.

Where'd the emai lcome from. this may be a new trailhead for a different game. I'd be interested in seeing/knowing anything at all about the message.

I think Overwatch is dead.

Maybe they're just calling the prelude over in preparation for the release of act 1 or whatever they want to call it.

They took down the links to the Appendix and Prelude from overwatch.visualfiction.net.

Hope to see you guys on other trails

What strikes me as the most strange is that the production blog changed. I don;t mean it was updated, I mean 6 weeks of updates (to be fair only 3 posts) were removed. These were the posts that talked about the story's information-limiting and control aspects and were basically documentation of what I see as the meta conflict between Overwatch and the UF philosophy.

I suppose this could be the lull between prelude and act one, or prelude scene one and prelude scene two (J1S2 as the production log shows), but I'm not convinced. First, it's a pretty bad way to maintain your audience's interest. Second, why would normal progress of the story necessitate deleting OOG blog posts that document almost the whole playing time of the story.

Seems to me the story teller(s) decided that UF wasn't the place to let this play out and have reasserted ownership of the story and have either cancelled it entirely, postponed it without letting the audience know, or moved it to some new and mysterious arena.

In any event, too bad. I really dislike following ARGs that typically boil down to no more than product placement or marketing campaigns. I've had a distaste for the corporate and the commercial since I was fairly young, and while I enjoy very much the investigative and intelectual challenges of ARGS and CF, I most emphatically do not enjoy feeling like some corporate shill for chasing down clue after clue in what is esentially a 3 month long commercial. I hate that Indie games/stories run such a high risk of crapping out like this.

I know one thing for certain: I won't be wasting anymore time trying to decipher codes or interpret clues in a dead game or story.

It's been a pleasure working with you guys, and I hope to see you in other threads. Very Happy

jz.

Overwatch

Let's hope its just a break to prep for the release..
I found this story very exhilarating and frustrating too...
Very challenging too..
Hope they don't file it in the waste can.

The person who told me about this (one of my friends on dA) seemed to advertise it, and from what I can see, it doesn't look like an ARG. The Overwatch (and what he says) is a multi-sensory (something like that) story, using visual, audio, text, videos, et cetera. It's supposed to be based off Rook County (something like that).

royalthames made new posts to twitter last night between 8:36pm and 9:48pm. Here's what he wrote:

"A team from the main office came down to our branch about 10 days ago.
They were checking into a shrinkage problem we've been having throughout the chain.
I guess they are having a hard time getting to the root cause of the problem.
I helped them look for about a week, but I get the feeling that they weren't any closer when they left than when they got here.
Now that that are gone I hope to be able to get back to some of the other stuff.
I mentioned before that someone I knew got hurt because of what I've found out about.
It seems that he was looking into things that a fair number of people had strong opinions about.
Specifically, they had opinions about him NOT looking into the stuff he was investigating.
Along with thinking that he had more to do with the files I have found than he actually did.
So it appears that they ensured that he would not be poking his nose into any of this stuff any more.
A mutual friend sent me a copy of the last thing he wrote. It's a letter to a friend of his, and it looks like he was going to encode it, but never got the chance.
There is a code among the cleartext, though. It looks like it points to a web site that he was using. Probably at WordPress.com.
I'm not a wiz at crypto, but I have a little background. I'm going to see if I can get it, or at least part of it.
If I get anything that looks promising I'll post it here. Maybe it'll shed some more light."

I am skeptical at best about this story having picked up again. I guess we'll see where it goes. Two weeks ago we had a variety of leads, and the cypher was only one of those; now we have more or less only the cypher. We'll see what RT has to offer.

can;t even resign right:P

RT is twittering. I'll edit to add the log shortly.
Quote:
Thought about that damn code all day today. Mutual friend had mentioned some of the things she had tried, so I tried a different angle.
I figured that the fact he used a monospace font means that the alignment of the letters is important.
Since I know he was a math buff (FRACTAL, right) I got the idea that maybe the key was directions on a number line; i.e. back 2, forward 5
that idea produced ANE GCA NDO OI (or, if the groupings don't mean anything: ANEGCANDOOI)
that idea produced TAL HOR HOE AE (or TALHORHOEAE)
Then I thought about how he liked to convolute things and supposed that he might rotate the grid 90 degrees clockwise...
That one produced REU YOD SIE UT (REUYODSIEUT)
Then I figured why not try another 90 degrees, effectively flipping the x-y by 180 degrees off the original...
That gave me UNE END IOE DE (UNEENDIOEDE)
Then I started thinking what if he was really paranoid and wanted to throw an ugly curve (assuming he thought the recipient would get it)...
...i.e. two back from the first D is N then five up the alphabet from N is S
Then I wondered about the same thing but with the 1st number in the key meaning to up or down that number of rows with negative being up
that gave me SYK SYK AHV IO (or SYKSYKAHVIO)
Then I did the same thing but with negative meaning down that number of rows and positive being up...
That resulted in PYS EOR DYK IO (or PYSEORDYKIO)
and at that point my head hurt so bad that I gave up. I have no idea if any of these makes sense
could be anagrams, could be in another language, who knows. A couple of the patterns look suspicious.
Ooops, got to go.

From that I got PYS EOR DYK SI, though I could be wrong: it's late. If it's still unsilved, I'll work on it tomorrow.
