Ok, you've played your card Mann Alive. You don't think this is an ARG so now you plan to troll it and annoy us who are. Do us a favour. Leave. Now.

Funny think, Frank O'Connor happens to be the PR guy for bungie, you know, the guy who updates the website every other day to keep everyone updated and writes tongue firmly in cheek? He also happens to be one of the four guys at bungie that control the Halo Story Bible. Has access to the big book of Halo-universe... PR guy... Haloverse and PR dude-guy. Don't you think that role would be kind of, you know. Perfect to run something like IRIS?

Ok, so it's not running fast enough for you? WAAAH. The biggest problem here is microsoft and not for the reasons you may think. Poor microsoft can't keep it's mouth shut about IRIS. Of course when they do you always get the generic "Micro$oft are evil" bullcrap. Go watch most news blogs when mention of IRIS comes up and you'll see exactly what I mean.

Another problem is the people who want another I Love Bee's and they want it now. I want something like that too but like the original, I'm well aware that I'm going to have to wait for the thing to unfold. This is the key thing that alot of newbies to this kind of thing keep missing. Be patient. Let the game unfold.

Of course given that microsoft have announced that they are doing this and have called it a "campaign" people are now jumping into a oh it's just marketing. Which is odd, because bungie call the story elements of each Halo Game "Campaign" no snappy one line sub-title or big summaries. Just funny level names and chapter gaps, the PR from microsoft are doing the same thing calling the main part of IRIS a campaign to fill in some nice little gaps.

This in turn creates panic threads like this and everyone argues over useless crap.

People. Calm down. Take it as a chance to learn more about HALO and have some puzzles thrown in. That's what it is. That's what I Love Bees was. Don't panic.

Quoted for truth.

In all honesty, some people are being impatient... I dabbled in ILB. When it was going on, I was 16, and overwhelmed and easily distracted. I couldn't follow it to completion. I'm determined to follow through this time, though. I've been checking all the relevant web sites on a daily basis. But that doesn't mean I expect an update every day. We've got till September, people. Let's take our time. Smile

Remember what Cortana said in the E3 trailer for Halo 3: "This is the way the world ends". That means it won't end until AFTER this ARG is over. Razz So let's show some patience and work on the clues we have rather than the ones we wish we had... As much as I'd love for my cell phone to spontaneously ring with a call from Bungie, or for one of the many SOTA emails I'm trying daily to go through, I'm willing to wait it out. Aren't you?

*sigh*... why did I start this stupid thread?

Ok, I'm back now, and with some perspective. It's and AR not an ARG, and I am totally cool with that now. I really don't have time to check this more than once a day anyhow, so it's probably a blessing.

I would highly advise anyone who's pissed about the state of this campaign to take a few days off. Go outside, get some work done or play some halo. Whatever. Just do something other than sit here and be upset. It's not healthy.

Bottom line: This is not an ARG right now. It may become one in the future (though I find that doubtful), and if so that's great. But at the moment we need to work with what we've got, not bitch about what we don't.

Could we get this thread locked by any chance? I think everything that can be said on this topic already has been, and this thread is just bumming me out.

Upon further review...no locking needed at this time. :)

Upon further review, we decided to not lock this thread. Just post your own views and respect the opinions of other players. It isn't hard.

No reason to lock it that I can see, it is a good discussion thread as far as I can tell. We aren't power crazy lockers of threads - basically duplicative threads are locked to keep the sub-forum organized and otherwise threads are lockedas needed.)

And, besides that, I have something to say. Some META stuff about this META topic. Wink

Here are three of the basic things I've learned about ARGs:

1. Players will always comment about pacing. No matter if it is too slow, too fast (yes that happens, when people feel they can't keep up), too little
info, too much info, only on weekdays when people have to work, on weekends when they have other stuff to do, only for the US, only for Europe, Australia getting ignored. That is just part of the deal.

2. When a game is slow, META discussion like this happens. And, it isn't a bad thing.

3. People will always discuss whether a game is an ARG or not, even if they've never played a game before. SpaceBass has a good, I would say great or brilliant but it seems like insider trading, article he wrote calledUndefining ARGs You might find that interesting.

One more thing: here is the basic deal from my personal perspective: We need diverse opinions, the more diversity the better. I see people blowing of steam and frustration in this thread. I see people urging patience. And then there are people in the middle. All of that is fine. This game, with its potentially huge player base can handle a little negativity and subjective criticism.

What we need to understand is that a group of players with a wide range of opinions and conflicting perspectives can work together extremely effectively and with mutual respect and support. People need to feel free to disagree and add their viewpoints. That is how we best play the game.

So, continue the discussion as needed.

Oh and from the beginning of this thread, a funny ilovebees story. Someone upthread claimed that we all knew that ilb was about Halo2 because it was in the trailer. If only I were that smart. Somewhere in a story so far thread for ilb you can find my count of the times Halo references in the text were made next to a count of times Odyssey references were made. ("wine dark sea" anyone?) Not until I read the fragment of Melissa's memory about "Reach burning in the distance" did I realize how wrong I was. I had read the "Fall of Reach." I had a good laugh at myself for that one.
Smile

Rose raises a good point. The first month or so people were debating if ILB was or was not halo. Is the I Love Bee's forum still archived? That could be an entertaining read for those so inclined. Heh

I think my biggest problem with this is that I just don't care as much as I did with ILB. Back then I really wanted to know about the Sleeping Princess, I really wanted more of the little stories of the girl and the balloon or whatever (I only vaguely remember that one), and the other early puzzles were really, um, meaty. I'd have to think about them a lot and I'd be really interested in the solution, but the thought process itself was much more interesting.

With Iris I just haven't had as much of a reason to care. I really wanted to be interested in the Flood Infection slide because it initially looked to be a TEM picture (and TEM is cool), but there's just nothing there. Before I wanted to help the girl, wanted to get more information, now I just have no drive to do so because I don't feel like I'm really helping someone. AR "died" and we couldn't do anything about it, and it doesn't really seem to matter that some new entity is there.

I guess this ARG just makes me feel pointless, so I have a hard time seeing the point of it as well. But hopefully we'll have more interesting characters soon and a story where we have an effect on what's going on.

Just remeber that the game doesent have to end for quite a while, there could be something more still in the works.

I doubt it. I think the one thing people are misunderstanding is this.
Why spend money on a game that sells it self?
Halo 3 will sell lots of copies and lots of 360 why spend more money advertising it?

Unless you have read all the Halo books and know almost every last detail of the story (like myself) this ARG won't make too much sense.

I was excited to see that Bungie would flesh out the first firing of the Halos.
Ever since the line Guilty Spark 343 had in Halo 1 I've wanted to know who set the Halos off the first time.
Also the "Last time you asked me..." line has spawned a insane theory in my head and this ARG has yet to confirm or deny it, but I'll keep it to myself for now.

These are good questions. The same thing applied to i love bees.

I think what Bungie wants to create is an atmosphere of expectation about the game, bring people back into the game world, and remind them of the Halo story.

i agree with rose, yes this is a viral campaign. but we havent delve far enough into it to reall tell if it is an ARG or not. i wasnt really into ARG's at the time of ILB but from what ive read and heard, it seems to be on the same path as this. we need patience. there could have been more interaction and clues earlier on but every ARG is different who knows, maybe they are going to bombard us with puzzles to figure out at the last minuete.

AshofPompei: im in the same boat pm me because i have a theroy too, ours might be the same

we just have to wait, and if you dont really have that paitience then i guess u wont be able to see it to the end. thats my take on it, im sorta a noob so trout me if you like. im open to all coments and critisism

The campaign is to raise awareness for those who have not engaged in the Halo experience. There are at least four billion people in the world, and how many X-boxes? I don't think Microsoft assumes they have made enough profit (i.e sold enough X-Boxes). And I doubt Bungie feels they don't want anymore money either.

As for ARG vs Marketing - If there's no money in it, most people won't do it. Halo was not developed as a gift to mankind - it's a product to be sold. If you already planned to buy Halo 3, then they do not need to continue trying to hook you. And I would think this publicity vehicle would not convince you to boycott the game either.

So, have fun with this diversion!

I dunno, I've seen some really strong knee-jerk reactions to this. Mainy from people who think that "halo" is over hyped and that microsoft can never do anything right ever. It's pretty funny.

I do think though, that while yeah, the goal behind halo 3 is to make money for bungie and microsoft, bungie still do alot of this to encourage people to get involved. Not everything has a money based hook to it, and bungie of all people know this, they've been doing it for quite a while.
