[META]Myspace characterization

Has Abrams et al created a new mode of verrismilitude with his characters by making them seem real to us through myspace - involving us in their lives before the event of the attack? any thoughts?

(didn't want to post this on the myspace page as it is is OOG and not IG. and also please don't tell me off if anyone has metnioned this before. also excuse my spelling)

edited to change tag to [META] ~rose

[META] Use of MySpace & Other sites to flesh out characters

Interesting topic for discussion. It's not really OOG, we would call that [META] (and hopefully you or a moderator can change the tag for the thread).

META discussion is when we talk about the puppetmaster (PM) and how the game is being developed, or when we discuss the use of materials/websites/real world stuff in the game. It takes us, the players, out of the game world and reminds us that it *is* a game, and not real life (cause the characters themselves live *in* the game world where TINAG (this is not a game) philosophy exists).

So, on to your idea.
It's being done in other ARGs now. In game characters having their footprint in the real world space so they seem "real". Hiro has a blog for Heroes, and Claire Bennet had a MySpace that was active during the first half of the season (when she still lived in TX and going to high school). The ARG Sammeeeees used MySpace in both games to show characters communicating with eachother prior to the game start (creating a backstory and cementing relationships, characterization, and personalities). Later we found personal blogs done before the game started.
I suspect that many of these character profiles for new/existing tv shows & movies will be found more and more often in social networking sites as internet saavy viewers seek to extend their entertainment experiences beyond the old viewing screen in the living room or movie theater.

I think this campaign tackles, and possibly solves, one of the biggest problems with the horror/monster genre. Two-dimensional characters.
It's very hard to make a 2 hour movie that has enough character development to evoke sympathy, and also plenty of carnage for your average gore fan. I see horror directors struggle with this all the time. If you watch any horror movie made in the past few years, there is always an attempt made to get you to sympathize with the characters as much as possible.

I think this campaign creates an alternative method that ensures everyone's satisfaction.
People who enjoy three-dimensional characters, character relations, and deeper stories can get it by participating in the ARG, or reading the reference threads after the fact.
People who just want two hours of mind numbing destruction can just go and watch the movie.
This way, there is no time "wasted" on things like character development, because that's already been done. The movie can focus entirely on the horrific events of 1/18.

If I'm right, we should expect some major activity with the Slusho Seven. Just enough to get us to care about who ends up two-dimensional on the bottom of the monster's foot.

The MySpace pages are in game. I think dunce was asking if the main purpose of the MSPs is just to familiarize us with the characters, and make them seem real. Which I think they've done a pretty good job of.

EDIT: Brilliant, Het, brilliant Smile

The unreality of horror/sci fi/gigantic monster movies etc seem to work better when the events are provided with a sense of reality e.g. the letters at the beginning of Frankenstein. Abrams and co. seem to know this and have incorporaed us all into this process even making us active participants in the world they/us are creating.

This is a pretty good peice of art so far...

Creates more empathy with the characters so when you go to the movie, you identify with them, you feel for them, and you forget you are watching a fictional movie. A good movie does that to you - sucks you into the TINAG mentality and you forget you are sitting in a movie theater.

Something that fascinates me about all ARGs is the community of players they create. More than in other art forms, active viewer involvement is integral to ARGs--not only because we're necessary to move the plot forward, but also because of what's happening right now: the way we communicate with each other.

This conversation right now may be classified as META, but the fact that we all share MySpace accounts with the Seven blurs the distinction, and our community becomes IG.

Edited to add that my point here is something like, How frigging cool is that?

Well I don't ask for every detail to be given to us automatically, but the sketchiness from it all can make one lose interest. I'm hoping at some time, at least in regards to the Myspace aspect of it all the characters actually do something more. A communication among them at least would spark a bit more interest.

Marketing or ARG, I think you're right. First, according to their ages and zodiac signs, several of the Slusho Seven (good name, btw) have birthdays coming up. Those birth dates probably weren't arbitrarily determined, i.e., it's another excuse for continued and realistic myspace activity between the Seven, in the months before the movie comes out.

Another example: Rob & Beth. Right now, it seems like Rob has a thing for Beth, but he's stuck being her "best friend." Bang Head Poor Rob.

For example, on the Myspace Accounts thread, jojo posted this exchange w/Beth (this isn't the whole exchange - I've edited out parts of this exchange that aren't relevant to my point here):

Quote:
From: jojo
Date: Aug 3, 2007 2:26 PM
By the way, what's up with you and Rob??? Looks like there's a little somethin' going on there!! Wink

From: Beth
Date: Aug 6, 2007 2:39 PM

There's nothing up with Rob and I... we're friends.

If that "call sheet" that just surfaced is legit., then the relationship between Rob & Beth will probably develop over the next few months as well. It seems like just the sort of thing you were talking about, Het.

I wish I came up with "Slusho Seven". I just saw people using it and adopted it. It's pretty clever.

And I think you are also right. Birthdays = parties = drunken sex = drama.

My birthday is also coming up (the 22nd)... That reminds me, I need to go out and get a keg of Slusho... can't drink just six pints.

The thing is dont like is this.

We are being an opportunity to get to know the characters months before the movie. We will already be familiar with the characters, and and will , yes, be able to symphathize with them.

But, The only people who will experience this are us, the people viciously following the film from day one. Everybody else will never experience it, and in a way be jipped out of it. How much of an impact will it make to have not played along with the ARG or at least the "pre-character development"??

So heres what i want.

1) Make the movie 100% enjoyable for people who didnt play along, or for people who watch the movie on DVD for years to come. They cant step back on the character development in the movie because of the internet games. That would be unfair. (as cool as it)

2) It would be a very good thing for someone from the production to make an official announcement regarding the game. When the tv spots hit, they should throw in an announcement about whats happening on the web, and how you can play along or follow the characters. That would be nice.
We all know the myspace pages are IG, but I think an official announcement should be made, allowing others to join in.

Just trying to see it from all angles i guess. Ive tried explaining this whole thing to people, and they just look at me like im crazy. I just hope everything goes flawlessly, and everyone enjoys the movie.

I'm pretty sure the movie will have enough character development to get by, but I have a feeling the bulk of this ARG will end up as bonus material on the DVD (which, according to recently acquired clues, might contain an alternate ending as well). Character myspace pages and significant blog entries will probably be included, as well as any video clip we might get (fingers crossed). Probably the pictures from 1-18-08.com too...

I just can't wait to see them die in five months. I can deal with Rob surviving; he's the only tolerable one on MySpace. But, God, I hope the others die.

Violently.

Screaming.

*EDIT*
Painfully.

(Thanks for the reminder)
