He's quite perceptive, that one.

Also, this isn't really a problem, but we shouldn't go searching around the name "Slusho" itself, it's been around since before 1-18-08 was even considered.

I've had a short series of replies back and forth with Rob. Using his Tesla interest, I asked if he had seen The Prestige and whether he'd recommend it. He replied that he did see it and that his favorite part was Bowie playing Tesla. Then I recommended The Illusionist as being more or less along the same lines (turn of the century magicians). He replied that he thought The Illusionist was "awful". Not to say I thought it was a great movie or anything, but this seemed like an oddly strong opinion to give when someone just said they liked it fine...but then, this type of over-the-top opinionating seems to be the myspace way.

My conclusion so far is that there's nothing in these myspace pages of any value other than character development. The "lateral thinking" business, which is hardly a revelation, doesn't really lead anywhere so far. It's just the typical sort of pretentious "look how smart I am" thing that fascinates people who believe their over-priced education was better than it actually was. In other words, it's just the sort of thing that these very unlikeable, stereotyped characters would be into, nothing more.

How exactly do we know these myspaces are authentic?

'Cause JJ Abrams called me the other day and was like "Dude, they got MySpace pages, check it", and then I told everybody...

...no I'm kidding, but I think it's because of the date the pages were started, and for however long they were only friends with each other. I'm sure there's something in one of the reference stickies.

Because we didn't know the character's names (except for Rob) The pages were found because of the text on the back of the pictures on 01-18-08.com and the pages had been created before that...

Don't know if any of you guys care, but you've been asking ppl to post their responses, so heres my three:

Me: Hey, loving the list! I suggest Nicole Richie, especially since her nose, eyes and ears are too big for her face.
LenaDia: Ooooh good one. And she acts like it too!
-
Me: What do you think about the upcoming Iron Man movie? Is it gonna be another Hulk, or actually something worth watching?
Hud: I saw some footage of the stuff they showed at comic-con, and I gotta tell you, it looks awesome. I dunno about John Favreau though... I mean, look how that hack Tim Story ruined the Fantastic Four franchise.
(btw, if someone want to fill me in on these names, it'd be appreciated.)
-
Me: I noticed on your MySpace page that you like Stephen King. Have you read any of the Dark Tower series? I highly recommend it!
Rob: I just finished Drawing and I've started #3
-

nothing majorly important. the only thing is that hud went to the comic-con where 1-18-08 was discussed.

Jon Favreau is the director of Iron Man; Tim Story directed both Fantastic Four movies.

Cool; I'll pick that up at the local vid-rental. Along the same lines, I'd recommend The Illusionist, with Ed Norton and Paul Giamatti. It's really well done, and even though you figure things out after a bit, it still comes off well. It was out about the same time as The Prestige, which had a bigger marketing budget, so The Illusionist didn't get as much media coverage.

Yeah, I dug the Prestige. Bowie as Tesla is actually my favorite part of the movie. It gets into his ideas for cheap, natural energy, which I've always found fascinating. The rest of the movie is just so so in my opinion, but I know a lot of people who absolutely loved it.

Hey Rob,

Seeing that you are a Tesla fan, I wonder if you saw the film The Prestige. I've been thinking of renting it, but not quite sure of the idea of having David Bowie playing the man who practically invented the 20th century. Have you seen it? Would you recommend it? I like most of your other favorite films, so your opinion is probably as good or better than those of the typical film reviewers.

Thanks,

XXXXX

Okay...now hold up a sec....

You've got a unique here, be happy. Others who have hinted or suggested any link to 1-18/slusho seem to be ignored or go without a reply (so far) and none of them have begun approaching the Taboo Topics....it seems clear that if we initiate it, this is out of bounds.

We follow their leads, they stay in control.

Now you get this from Hud and it's initiatory in nature. He "started it" so to speak. Skirting the line here for an opening to ask or engage any sort of exchange about CC - which would pose a potential sticky spot if Abrams gets mentioned. (Then again, for all we know Abrams is working Hud's ms site since he's into the comic thing you know...)

I don't suggest asking directly - I still suggest we follow their leads but he opened a path for ya on this one. You can play clueless, saying you've not heard of CC and asking what it's about....or you can be aware of it and say you wanted to go but couldn't because of work or whatever....and see if you can get a dialogue going about CC that could lead to an IN GAME ORIENTED feedback about what happened this year at CC, anything out of the ordinary, who all attended, any cool news, etc. that sort of thing, while never initiating anything directly about Abrams, this flick, the shoots, slusho or anything else. He said he saw footage, didn't say he went, unless you left out something....so you could even ask what footage and where you can check it out yourself.

It would also help us get an idea of what the boundaries are. If you blatantly cross it, you could get the door slammed via no more exchange. If *they* initiate it, then approach it from the perspective they don't know they're characters and therefore have no awareness of any movie about their future.

But Hud has initiated a crosslink here by mentioning CC at all, and we all know Abrams was there plugging the movie, offering up the posters, etc. If you work in a sideways question he might supply something in the way of a clue for us without stepping out from behind any curtains, ya know?

Just don't approach this directly or mention Abrams or any of this. You got a nibble here and you're the first we know of so far. So tread carefully but definitely step it up a little and see what it yields!

Good idea, except that I believe it's already been established that HUD had to have gone to the NY comic-con, not San Diego.

Again, this is a pretty odd response for a movie character to make nowadays. Blatantly homophobic characters are pretty much non-existent unless they're supposed to be thugs. These stereotyped characters, so far, have been going down a relatively PC road, what with the Hillary supporters and all. Given that, the response by HUD is a bit out of (assumed) character, don't you think? Suppose he wrote that comment to someone who happened to be gay and that person was particularly sensitive and took offense? Not a smart move, if you ask me--could pose some problems for Paramount. It may be a realistic response, perhaps, but the PC police have set pretty strict boundaries for what's acceptable in films these days--there's no way that they'd ever let a lead character be like that in the movie unless it was a bad guy.

But if we are to assume that these people are existent, would it not be a smart move for paramount (or one of their lackeys) to have them make a statement so out of the ordinary for a movie actor nowadays to prolong this belief? Not to mention, these characters haven't been likeable thus far...pushing a sense of bigotry within a main character certainly helps with this.

Hud listed LOST as one of his favorite television shows (on his myspace profile). So, you could mention seeing J.J. Abrams at the SD convention, as part of this 'comparing of notes.' Don't know what you'll get from it, but it would be interesting to see if Hud responds at all.
