If that's four years after Halo 3... sigh. Does that mean he dies? sigh. Fantastic find, though.

I agree. Nice find. I dont think it necessarily means he dies... theyre just honoring what he did.

Nice job not marking this topic as a possible major story spoiler or anything. Because, this being a Halo 3 ARG forum, I'm sure nobody here cares about learning how the game might end.
That being said, a similar spoilerish ad in EGM was confirmed by Bungie to be nothing but "flavor", and that the ad's designers had no access to information about the game's conclusion. One would hope the same would hold true here. But still, people... a bit more consideration, please!

I think this is a great update. I don't think it is a spoiler, but I'm willing to go with the wishes of those who think it might be. It did give me a bit of a shock when I first saw it.
But we don't know that it spoils the ending. Or even that he is dead. It says " a musical celebration" that could easily be done to honor him for saving the universe while he is still alive.

I have seen the phrase "A musical celebration of <name>'s life" at a memorial service before, usually on an anniversery of someone's death. I'm seriously hoping that this isn't the case, but I can see John-117 doing that for someone or something he cared for.

I do find that date curious though. Halo one and two were during the year 2552 and Halo 3 was mentioned at the unveiling that the game starts in early 2553. Which puts this date at three years after halo 3 (as far as we know of course) now that seems a little early to hold an anniversary celebrating the life of someone like that. Normally (And bear in mind I might be wrong) a big event like that would be held maybe five or ten years after a death?
Also also wik: September 26th? Given it's a day after halo 3's release date? Hmm. That seems too close to be a co-incidence. Still, what it means at the moment is anyones guess.

Looking at this another way . . . Well, he may not have died, but maybe he has moved on. Possibly ascended to Forerunner status?
Would make more sense, as winning a game means NOT DYING - in this case MC needs to survive, somehow.
Ascendancy would be possible, the Great Journey may not be the activation of the rings, but the Ark entry, so the Covenant would be misguided, and not totally incorrect.
The Forerunners may have been dual races, the higher beings that moved on and the ones that ended up being zapped. The zapped ones were "unworthy" of ascending and thus blanked out, so that new races would rise and try their hand. The study of the flood was the test for entry, and the original lower caste failed miserably, so the Forerunners had to activate the Halo (no remorse) to start over.
This would explain the Flood's extragalactic origin (Higher Forerunners are extragalactic) and the mention this may have happened before.

The ad says September 25th, 2556. I'm with George Noory, there is no coincidence.
