I'm not arguing this is godzilla either way, but had to comment about godzilla if it was....

Godzilla might've been scary a few decades ago but with our hi tech advances seeing it now is just comical - which he mostly referenced that very way in his comicon talk. Didn't he call both zilla and kong all cute and cuddly, adorable little things, etc. I don't think it would be godzilla per se but godzillaish, if that makes sense. Plus, didn't they just make a godzilla flick a few years ago that sucked balls? (ping pong balls for you kiddies here, I meant ping pong balls )

He said he was inspired to do this when he went to Japan, with his son...but for any real monster to work in this country, no matter it's inspiration, it's just going to have to be over the top in a realistic fashion. Most of the monsters we got are so stereotypical, and USA can always kill them off with a nuke or two.

A good curveball is one we cannot kill so easily (and I don't mean the crackpot BS like Michael, Freddie and Jason). And would need to be particularly vicious, which is more or less suggested by ripping off the SOL head - IF that is how it actually plays out. We don't truly know how the SOL came off - military missile could've malfunctioned and blew it off and the monster just grabs it...or something meteor or whatever slammed into it, who knows, I'm just sayin. If the monster did take it off, that's pretty harsh.

And personal in its symbolism which is interesting if they bothered to make it that way. If the whole SOL was blown up or knocked over, we would see that more as collateral damage, shit happens we get it. But a specific "injury", or a focused one like that makes it a little more personal thing we'd take personally, if you can follow my drift here. Just a small reference to forensics, any multiple injuries to anyone's face is considered a personal assault on victim by the perp - someone they knew, and distinguishes it from other types of crimes. A beheading is not only personal, but horrifically barbaric and torturous.

But then to throw the head itself into a building and have it go careening down the main street there is almost like the insult to the injury. Back to Abrams at CC - for him to present zilla and kong as more or less house puppies suggests what he had in mind for this monster is something we really haven't seen before. Even if he went with a zilla inspired dragon/dinosaur, it'd not be Jurassic Park - it'd be something fierce and vicious and bloodhungry...such as in zilla, the mother runs to the street just in time to grab her precious little 3 year old barely missing getting stepped on....this monstrous creature may well just go on and eat the 3 yo and then spit the rest of it out into a car windshield - that sort of approach. Something that hits us personally but that's so over the top we're shocked into uncomfortable laughter. As opposed to the sort of laughter that happened in Son of Godzilla, or whichever it was when godzilla and son were having a little learning session to teach son of godzilla how to blow fire....and he tried and tried but couldn't do it. So godzilla slams down hard on son's tail one good time causing the son to blow fire finally. I laughed my ass off.

I do kinda like the approach of not really providing all the backstory of the monster IN the movie....just seeing the events play out in various footage so that when we've left the theater, we're completely engaged in discussing what it was, its origins, leaving this open for interpretation would be a pretty refreshing ending.

And I do think they should just leave the title 1-18-08....because it's about the events....not the monster....

I agree. In todays movie market, Franchise just isn't for high budget super-hero movies anymore. I can definitely see JJ leaving the entire chronology of the monster out of the movie or at least that part before it comes out of the ocean for another movie.

Mystery tends to lead to more fear anyhow in a well made movie. IF we do not know its origins or the cause of its ire against us, that makes it that much more frightening to watch. Add to the fact we have not seen it yet and that only compounds it even more.
