[META] (re trailer and) Character's myspace interaction
I am a noob, fine, but answer me this -

The hype on the internet about this trailer is overwhelming, millions of references are now in the Google index.

I have tried to communicate with the characters and had no response, a few of you have. Did anyone ask them if they had seen the trailer?

I know it sounds like a silly question, but, what the hell? I can't get behind them being real people unless they have at least kept up with current affairs. All of them have computers and yet none have seen the trailer? They talk about current movies but have not been a part of the buzz. Why can't they just say something like, "Yea, that guy looks like me but...".

The only fun thing about any of this anymore is seeing some smart ass post "OMG, HAVE YOU SEEN THIS NEW TRAILER!!!" in other boards. Classic cases of mild autism.

edit to add tag and clarify topic a bit. Great question by the way. ~rose

that would be weird if they did, cos you would then end up in this perpetual loop, they would have to respond as though the characters were not them and then based on that the characters background would then have to appear on myspace for them to look at, very confusing.
i think they see everything else we see except this trailer and movie. their lives are running concurrently.

If you want them to write you back, try engaging them in conversation about stuff that they have said interests them (Hud and X-Men, Lily and the book "House of Leaves") that sort of thing. Don't ask them about the movie or trailer, because they'll just ignore you. In their "alternate reality", the movie and the trailer are part of their future, so they haven't happened yet (to them).

This is a great question.

The crash of the fictional world of the movie into the fictional/ real world of the internet -what do the myspace charactes reveal. They need to seem "real" but what can they acknowledge?

I don't see a way that the myspace pages can acknowledge the existence of the trailer for a movie that they are in, as characters, a movie that would show their possible future... I mean wouldn't they just cancel Rob's party?

I never played the LOST Experience, but I've kept up w/the show - I assume that the LOST ARG was designed to find out more about the Dharma Group and who was pulling the strings on the island, etc. Backstory for LOST.

I'm also guessing that they could present that ARG as though it all existed in 'real time' because the main events take place in remote locations, e.g., the island. Again, I could be wrong about that - never played the ARG.

Anyway, compare that to this movie - they can pretend the characters on myspace are real people, living in NYC right now, b/c the monster won't attack until (probably) January 18th. Once that happens, i.e., once the movie comes out, then the 'reality' of the myspace pages will be utterly ruined. (unless Bad Robot has some horrifically radical ideas about how to market this movie! people of New York: Run for your lives!!).

There is, of course, one other way around that reality clash - if all the myspace people die, then it won't matter anymore, and the ARG can involve stuff about Slusho!, and possibly elder Hawkins', etc., like the LOST experience. Of course, there will still be the awkward disjunct of a ruined NYC in the game-reality, and a happy, go-lucky, up and runnin' and kickin' ass NYC in our reality (the 'real' reality).

Hurm...

In any case, it would seem that for any kind of ARG to work post-movie...

...the Slusho Seven Must Die! Surprised
