[INFO] Websites Down (4/14/04)

Ok, I really don't know how much of an update you can consider down websites, but I thought I'd post which were affected.

The following websites were down as of 9:20am EDT

http://www.amboymonthly.com/
http://www.columbiariverrentals.com/
http://www.bluelouboyle.com/
http://www.ideltech.com/
http://www.ruaware.org/ [Trailhead site]

The following websites were still up (since they all seem to be hosted elswhere)

http://www.bluelouboyle.blogspot.com/
http://www.amboymelody.blogspot.com/
http://groups.msn.com/MelodysResearch
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GrendelSupporters
http://www.freewebs.com/ruaware/ [Krystal's original guide redirect]

So where does this leave us? A few ideas:
1. The down websites part of the game. We do have that anagram "puzzle" from "Sing my Angel of Music" that gives us "login name". And you can get to a webmail login screen from the down websites (even amboymonthly. Source code reveals link to page that gives webmail and guestbook links).

2. The PM's goofed up. The text on the down pages say "For This Site Owners: Please check subscription confirmation e-mail for instructions." In this case the sites should be back up after the PM's take care of the subscription issues for the website hosting (or perhaps after we go and buy lots of stuff from them: http://www.cafeshops.com/areyouaware or maybe Clarence's ebay auctions).

3. This is all real and Tobi is some alien intelligence who has started his takeover of the planet, starting with all of the websites that could lead to information to stop his evil plan. (Ok, maybe that is just my lack of sleep talking.)

So what can we do?
1. Figure out the login puzzle, access the webmail, and get the sites back up.

2. Nothing, except buy stuff to support the PM's.

3. Kiss our butts goodbye?

All thoughts/comments/ideas are appreicated, although possibly not comprehended.

Rowan

The only thing that confuses me is that all the images were hosted, at least for the Professor, on the website, pre-crash. As if it were anticipated. Maybe that's some web thing I don't understand, but, why would he be hosting images for a hosting company?

I say we go for it, try to get in.

It is also possible that those images were there before the initial site was uploaded. If the domain was initially registered, yet parked, there are several ways a hosting company could do that. One way is to have a parked page sitting in the website's directory, with associated images in the image directory. When the actual non-parked site gets uploaded, the parked index page would, obviously, have gotten overwritten, but the images that were there when parked got left there.

Yeah, thing is, the images were there, then deleted, and are now being hosted there again...So why did they go in the first place, and how did they get back?

I've been looking, but nothing so far. Using s-tools, and trying 'music' as the passphrase. Of course, either nothing could be hidden or the passphrase could be wrong. Very Happy

I am not sure if this is a clue, or behind the curtain, but the guest book directory/directories is/are browsable. For instance:

http://www.amboymonthly.com/guestbook/

Additionally, the footer in the file index says:

Quote:
Apache/1.3.27 Server at ircsupport.biz Port 80

ircsupport.biz? That seems to have the same parked page as all the rest.

Also, the guestbook is shared by all the down sites.

See here for an explanation on the downtime. With luck, all will be up in a short while.

That may have been what happened inside the game, but that doesn't mean that the sites' downtime couldn't be planned on Mr. Carey's part.

But does that matter? The "game" is literally offering an 'alternative for reality', so I go by that alternative, regardless of what might be causes in 'our' reality... I'd rather not think about that, I happily go by whatever reason Marcus gives us Smile

Perhaps "Wilbur"? We know that the Ideltech guys used that as a password for something.

More evidence that the images are significant: the picture of the plant is called "lemon tree." Clarence Houston (the guy who was selling stuff on E-Bay) had a link to a page called CrystalLinks, and on the front page there is an image called "Ellietree.jpg." LE tree. Lemon tree. Cute.

If the lemon tree pic were only on in-game sites, maybe... but during the day (before the chat with Marcus), we found out that those seem to be generic placer images that were on a number of non-game sites.

Though you never know... Smile

I figure it's probably Manson's login, what with all the references to dogs Drexel's been throwing out (Manson is said to have a dog in his bio). Did Manson ever mention his dog's name?

Zzedar I'm not sure what you are talking about. What login. If you think Wilbur is the passphrase for a steged photo then you should try it. Boy, I had to go thru the character bios to figure out who Manson was Smile I think of him as Marty. I didn't even know he had a dog. But now I see he has a doberman. I guess you could ask Marcus the dog's name since Marty is never on line. But what login in would you try them on?
