Q and A with the L3 PMs and Stephen Lake

Enaxor and I, being the ADs on the L3 case at CD, were recently invited to submit questions to the PMs of L3. We were also aksed to submit questions to Stephen Lake of Landau, Luckman and Lake. This is what we got.

1. You mentioned in your mail that the previous tests were a prologue; if so were
they a preview of what we should
expect in the game?

The tests were mostly a way of seeing how we were doing in creating
interesting clues and in a way to see how we as PMs are doing. So it
was sort of a dry run so to speak. The actual game will focus around a
very elaborate story with plenty of content to keep everyone involved.

2. What is the launch date or has the game already started?

What game? No, seriously the game hasn't started yet. The whole thing
started out as one big teaser. And from there turned into 6 tests. As
for a launch date, it is up in the air. We wanted to be cordial and
time our launch around CTW, but they've extended their game and will
be starting late, so our date hasn't been set. We're not sure what we
want to do and what players would want us to do.

3. How long is the game expected to run?

4. Search4E had interaction with in-game characters. i.e.) One character would
drop hints periodically if the players
needed a nudge
in the right direction. We so far in L3 have had some interaction
through e-mail with in-game characters.

We're leaning to less and less hint dropping but interaction is a
focal point for the whole experience.

5. Can we expect this interaction to continue?

Yes

6. In December players were told they would be given 6 tests to
complete. Are these 6 tests the game in its entirety or just the
beginning?

The six tests are just a teaser to introduce a few of the game
elements and characters. What you've seen so far is the tip of the
iceberg.

7. Confirmations on the solves have been communicated through e-
mails; Why does there seem to be some inconsistencies in the turn
around time after we submit the solve?

Part of the genre is realism. Every email won't necessarily be
answered and the timing will vary depending on how much is going on.
Our responses will be geared to keeping the experience balanced and
maximize the enjoyment for the players.

8. If we give an incorrect solve, will you always reply telling us it
is incorrect? If not how long should we wait before we know the solve
was incorrect?

Once the actual game launches, the story will be more fluid and the
puzzles will be essential to the story. Most will not require emails
to in-game characters. You'll know what you need to do.

As for the tests you will hear if you are correct or incorrect.
Timeliness of the replies depends on if we feel the submission of the
answer was a "dart in the dark" approach or if it was full blown
solution.

9. Are the map puzzles relevant to helping Jake?

The map puzzle has nothing to do with Jake. We simply created the
Map.htm as a response to bogus PM surveys or surveys that were just
submitted incomplete.

10. Do the map puzzles have to be solved to move the game forward?

The map solution has been posted to cd.org. It isn't really part of
the experience.

Q and A with Stephen Lake

This is what we received from Stephen Lake.

Q. How long has Landau, Luckman, and Lake been in business?

A. About 200 years.

Q. Isn't LLL the firm that represents the X-men?

A. The comic book hero's? They aren't real!!!

Q. How many clients do you represent?

A. As a matter of discretion, we don't discuss our clients.

Q. What type of law does your firm practice?

A. Landau, Luckman, and Lake is a general practice law firm. Our attorneys handle
a wide range of both civil and criminal matters.

Q. What year did the mysterious client leave the papers and
instructions with LLL?

A. We're not at liberty to discuss any aspect of our client's cases.

Q. Was LLL instructed to release the first test by date or was it due
to a particular event?

A. Actually, it was the lack of an event.

Q. What event did not take place? If the event had taken place would the first
test not have been released?

A. We waited for a phone call at a prearranged day and time that we never received.
Per our instructions we opened Test 1.

Q. Is the mysterious client connected with the funding for the
research being done by Dr. St. Vincent at R-L-C?

A. The current activities are directly related to our client.

Q. Do you know how a code(semaphore) got under a painting that was
painted 400 years before the code was created?

A. We are not at liberty to release any further details.

Q. NRU is a university dedicated to the sciences, why was Mr. Lake a
lawyer invited to be a guest lecturer?

A. Mr. Lake's invitation was something of a surprise to us also. He plans on
lecturing in the college of computer science. He's helped several universities protect
themselves from lawsuits based on invasion of privacy issue in the past.

Q. The NRU crest has four symbols on it, three we recognized, Pi,
compass and square, and atom. What is the fourth symbol and what does it represent?

A. Sorry, we don't know either.

Q. Is there any connection between NRU and the secret society of the
Freemasons or any other secret society?

A. We know of no connection to secret societies and NRU.

Q. Is Jake now or at anytime in the past a student at NRU?
Q. Is or was Jake a faculty member of NRU?
Q. Is Jake a client of LLL?
Q. What is Jake's full name?

A. Who is Jake?

Q. Was there ever a forth partner at LLL by the name of Lequare?

A. No, there was never a fourth partner at Landau, Luckman, and Lake
with the name of Lequare.

The answer to that last question makes me wonder if there was a fourth partner...his name just wasn't Lequare. Hmmm...
