[SOLVED] Phantom1.mid

The note from WR caused me to look into the midi file a little. I loaded it up in a midi sequencer, here is a screencap of what I see. I'm not really into music, so I'm stumbling here a bit.

I noticed channel 7 was muted. I selected channel 7 so that is what you see in the picture. Here is what I've gathered with my meagre knowledge.

The notes are D D G A B C# C3
They seem to be 32nd notes
These are the only notes on channel 7.

BTW, if you want to play with it yourself, I used Anvil Studio. Its free, just google for it and download it.

Thanks for putting up the screenshot!

Those are definitely 32nd notes, in the bass clef. Also, that final note is a C natural.

I asked one of my music major friends to peek at it, and she said the intervals are P1, P4, +2, +2, -7, dim1. There's also octave notation under the first four notes.

Now that I have battery power again ( Rolling Eyes ), I wanted to add that the interval between the last two notes is a 1/2 step. If those notes /are/ supposed to represent a date/time, it could be referring to 30-minutes past some hour.

"Music of the Night" midi

Here is a site, from off the web, that has the same midi on it. It's titled "MUSICNIT.MID" there.
I tried to listen for any difference between the two, but had no luck.
Maybe someone with a better ear can find something missing (or added)?

Well, for one thing, it doesn't have that muted track 7 on it. Otherwise, it looks to be the same as the one on the above website. Also, when you open up phantom1.mid in notepad, the following appears at the top:
ÿ2003.12.01 ÿQ¡

but if it means anything, I haven't figured it out yet.

Rowan
Who went out and bought the cd of phantom tonight just to listen to something other than the midis!

More musings on the intervals... Considering that the 2nd midi file that drizjr found is the same as on the Prof's site, except for the muted 7th channel, I think this is where the info needs to be.

The's no change between the first two notes... what if this is 0? Then using the "real" interval info, that could give 4-2-2. April 22. Then for the last two intervals, the "real" one is 7, with a 1/2 step between the final two notes. April 22, 7:30(pm?). Though the 22nd is still a week away... that seems like a long time to wait for this broadcast.

Any thoughts?
-Sara

QUESTION:what's the word?

Do any lyrics correspond to those muted notes? If there are, maybe they would lead to a new page at bluelouboyle? Or have we already missed some meeting somewhere?

The first stanza of the Music of the Night:

Nighttime sharpens, heightens each sensation;
Darkness wakes and stirs imagination...
Silently the senses abandon their defenses
Helpless to resist the notes I write...
For I compose the music of the night.

The italics represent the difference in some of the versions. The original cast has stirs & wakes and omits the last 2 lines.

this afternoon in IRC, gypsychk thought that the muted noted sounded like the star spangled banner, and it turns out, i hope, that's she's right. If you transpose the muted notes into the key of C, you get GGCDEFG, and if you compare that to the score of the song, http://www.treefort.org/~rgrogan/web/usa1.htm , for the line "o'er the land of the free", the notes are the same.

not sure where to go now, though

PS I don't mean to steal your thunder gyps, i'm just geeked about this!

Thanks, but thunder scares me. Wink

Besides, I finally went and listened to the notes as they are in the muted track, and the last two notes are pretty off. Even with Roseanne's sense of rhythm and pitch, I can tell that much.

QUESTION: which words exactly?

Rowan, thank you for your stanza posting. Can it be narrowed down a bit more to the lyrics that exactly match the muted notes? Maybe that'll be our tag on?

Ok, it seems like our dear little Melody solved this before we did (if you subsitute her references of his blog to his home page). Not that she's giving us the answer. That would be too easy! She does give us some hints. Thank you so much Rasputin for posting the convo. Basically, she hints that the following are imporant:

1. The notes
2. Capitalization
3. The extension

Here is a link to the convo: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4069

Well, after much wrangling, and dealing with a flaky router, we managed to get this one nailed:

Only to get another puzzle revealed to us, which I'll put in it's own post. Smile
