[SPEC] "Happy Talk" & "Tales from the South Pacific"

Hey Guys!

If this was said already then you can put a noose around my neck. If not, give the below some thought!

I was at a party tonight and I showed some of my friends all the stuff found so far regarding this movie. They were all amazed at the amount of work that has gone into it so far and couldn't believe the depth of the pre-story story. They just thought it was a normal "godzilla" monster movie . . . don't let them down JJ!!

Anyway, I showed them the "Happy Talk" page and one of the girls said that it's a song from the musical version of the book "Tales from the Sotuh Pacific". She told me it's a story about war between US and JP.

If someone knows the story better there may be something here . . . it has alot of common elements such as Japan, a tie to the US, it was a Broadway musical (ie. NYC), takes place in the pacific ocean, etc. . . .

Here's a link to the musical wiki --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Pacific_(musical)
Here's a link to the book wiki --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_of_the_South_Pacific

The Happy Talk song is sung by a character called Bloddy Mary. She is a native of the island Bali Ha'i (which, accoring to wikipedia, is based off of this real life island --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aoba_Island).

Song Lyrics:
Quote:

Bloody Mary:
Happy talk, keep talkin' happy talk,
Talk about things you'd like to do.
You got to have a dream,
If you don't have a dream,
How you gonna have a dream come true?

Talk about the moon floatin' in the sky
Lookin' at a lily on the lake;
Talk about a bird learnin' how to fly.
Makin' all the music he can make.

Happy talk, keep talkin' happy talk,
Talk about things you'd like to do.
You got to have a dream,
If you don't have a dream,
How you gonna have a dream come true?

Talk about a star lookin' like a toy
Peekin' through the branches of a tree;
Talk about the girl, talk about the boy
Countin' all the ripples on the sea.

Happy talk, keep talkin' happy talk,
Talk about things you'd like to do.
You got to have a dream,
If you don't have a dream
How you gonna have a dream come true?

Talk about the boy sayin' to the girl:
"Golly, baby, I'm a lucky cuss"
Talk about the girl sayin' to the boy:
"You an' me is lucky to be us!"

Happy talk, keep talkin' happy talk,
Talk about things you'd like to do.
You got to have a dream,
If you don't have a dream
How you gonna have a dream come true?

If you don't talk happy,
And you never have dream,
Then you'll never have a dream come true!

[Spoken]
It's good idea, you like?

It may be nothing, but who knows it may be something!

At this point of the 'ARG', any speculation is good speculation. (Unless its about CHUTHULULU . . . . Rolling Eyes )

I don't think it's anything to be honset. THe poem hardly seems to have anything to do with the movie, as well as slusho, and happy talk is a common term used almost everywhere. Google it, I'm sure you'll come up with more than just that book.

Also New york = atlantic ocean, not south pacific.

Happy talk is also a common used term in Japan for customer reviews.

Actually, I think it's a damn good find. "Happy Talk" might be a coincidence, but the lyrics of that song aren't totally out of place - Ganu's dream...? Point is, there's a lot of dream talk. It doesn't clash w/what we know so far. Could be related. And, do you think J.J. Abrams is familiar with "Tales From the South Pacific"? Nah.... Wink

Damn, Mr. uninvited beat me to it! Doh!

It's a bit far out, i'll admit.. But any guess is as good as the next, as we have had no real leads lately.

Linking slusho to south pacific to climate change -

I thought I had found something a few weeks back and then "lost my thread"

slusho cups that are full

if you count the cups either side of the slusho logo (nine either side 1-9)

the full cups are

4 (from the first set of 1-9)

2, 4 and 5 (from the second set)

So, the full cups are 4 - 2 - 4 - 5

that could be read as 42-45 which were the years that the US was involved in the second world war in the South Pacific.

A short google for "1942 1945 japan ocean experiments"

and close to the top of the list is

http://www.1ocean-1climate.com/20th-century-climate-changed-by-the-naval-war.php

like many other posts speculative.... but its the best I can do !

Hehehe, there were lots of girls there so I'll say no and yes there was alcohol (beer pong anyone??).

However, alot of the guys were computer programmers or computer engineers! Very Happy

Hey, girls are nerds too. Wink

I don't think you've found anything. "Happy talk" means a number of things--I personally lean toward the newsroom definition: happy talk is the filler chat that kills time between segments. If this whole situation hasn't been a timekiller before the movie comes out...

The numerous references to a "Lily" caught my mind, being that the Secret Ingredient on the Slusho site is shaped/looks like a Lily.

You know, it's funny, but when I first saw "happy talk" at the site, the song from South Pacific went through my head and I made a mental connection, but didn't think to mention it. I think it's a good clue, now that I know I'm not alone.

My brother was big into musicals from the 50s (don't ask), so I must've heard this song about twenty thousand times. It's an extremely well known musical and widely considered one of the best; I believe it had a revival just a few years ago, so it also could have been fresh in the minds of someone(s) at Bad Robot. Another well-known song from the musical is "Some Enchanted Evening" (yes I am aware of the irony there too).

It's not necessary to find any connection between the film/play or even the context of that story for there to be clues. There very well could be clues in the lyrics, or just the titles of those two songs; or maybe not. What else do we have to go on?

Here's the songlist just to save you time (can't say that there's much to be found there):

Dites Moi
A Cockeyed Optimist
Twin Soliloquies
Some Enchanted Evening
Bloody Mary
There Is Nothing Like a Dame
Bali Ha'i
I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair
A Wonderful Guy
Younger Than Springtime
Happy Talk
Honey Bun
You've Got To Be Carefully Taught
This Nearly Was Mine

EDIT/ that list I posted was not entirely accurate (can't trust anything on the web). It failed to include"My Girl Back Home".
