 [SPEC] Theory about the monster
Compelling Idea

I'll preface this with the fact that I've searched and not seen this anywhere at all: Dagahra

Now, Dagahra was an ancient creature created by the Nilai Kanai, a technologically advanced civilization that was part of the Mu empire, (which could be -at least in this theory -referenced by the "Alpha Kappa Mu" fraternity paddle found in the teaser-trailer).

According to Wikipedia, Dagahra's function was to consume the civilizations pollution, which it did well. This jives with the Slusho anagram for their slogan, "You Can't Drink Just Six" which can be rearranged to spell "A Toxic Industry's Junk"

Wiki continues by saying that as a side effect (to fighting pollution?), Dagahras body began producing swarms of toxic starfish called Barems, which began infesting and poisoning the continent, driving the indigenous people into extinction.
Over at http://www.cloverfield-movie.com/blog/, an apparent conversation with "someone in the know" seemed to suggest that "much of the movie will revolve around the characters fleeing for their lives, not from the big one stomping the city, but from the "raptor-like" smaller versions hunting them down." Perhaps reinvisioned "Barems"?

I read somewhere too that Dagahra was believed to be responsible for the death of the dinosaurs which was interesting because over at http://www.myspace.com/jamielascano, Jamie states that "I destroyed the dinosaurs. I'm really sorry. They just wouldn't listen!"

And (on Wiki) "The giant moth Leo nearly succeeded in defeating Dagahra, until the sea monster took the battle underwater where it was in its element." Now, this may be stretching it, but Rob (http://www.myspace.com/robbyhawkins) listed HUD as one of his heroes, and HUD's star sign is Leo.

So that's it -a theory which, to be completely honest was devised by my wife... She kicks ass. Feel free to expound on this theory.

That theory would be excellent and well thought out...except JJ said the monster would be original. New. Dagahra already exists. Though, if he hadn't have said that I'd be all for this theory.

He did say NEW. He said our own. now that doesnt mean it has to be a 100% new monster but one that maybe we created a background story for or a prequel so to speak of its previous appearance, and MAKE IT OUR OWN. Im hoping its new. I really want a NEW monster but no where did he say NEW, its just generally accepted (and hoped for) that it will be from scratch.

That being said. I hope its not another Godzilla challenger. but its a very well thought out and researched hypothesis and if its right you get to toss up the two finger salute saying I TOLD YOU SO.

Oh and to requote JJ Abrams
Quote:
This is going to be really, really quick,

I just want to say, I want a monster movie.
I want a great monster movie. I wanted a monster movie for so long.

and, I was in Japan over a year ago with my son, who's eight.
and all he wanted to do was go to toy stores, so I know he's my son.
and we went to all these stores and there were still all these Gozillas everywhere
and whats better than Godzilla?

And I thought, we need out own monster, like we need a monster movie

And I thought not like King Kong. I love King Kong. King Kong is adorable.
And Godzilla is a charming monster. We love Godzilla

But I wanted something that was just insane, and intense.

And so we started making this movie,
and we're making it for you right now, and it's almost done shooting.
And I watch dailies, and I'm more excited about the movie itself than the trailer,
which has gotten an amazing response. I can't thank you enough for that

I would say that we have six months before this movie comes out, it's a long time
And so, in the coming months, you're going to get a whole bunch of things:

* You're going to get the real trailer
* You're going to get the real poster
* You're going to get to see the footage from the movie
* And You'll get the real title

I don't give that today. But, I will give you today...

[Croud aaaawwwwwwwws!]

Oh COME ON! Please! You think we'd call it "Monsterous"? No.

We have something for you, which is that we have these posters that are made that are really cool. A series of four posters that everyones is going to get, and I hope you like those too.

I can not wait for January. You guys are the greatest. Thank you so much.

I disagree with this interpretation. In context, "our own" means "American," as opposed to Godzilla, who is Japanese. That rules out every monster of non-American origin.

Amazing find. This is one of the few monster ideas which seems unknown yet likely enough to work.

WE can never know for sure, but I strongly feel we should keep an eye on this.

with mack, every monster with non-american origin has to be ruled out. we (americans) have to screw up to make this monster

That's where you heard of the extinction of the dinosaurs.

So I guess Hud is Leo, Rob is Dagahra, and Jamie is King Ghidorah?

Yes and no...
Good points all around

While I understand what you're saying, I don't think it unequivically eliminates the possibility of anything that wasn't created in America or by an American.
Yea, he does say "our own monster" and some could argue that the American made Zilla was an attempt to Americanize the iconic Japanese figure and kinda make it our own -or rather make our own version of Godzilla.

With that said, I think it's possible that he could have seen a toy for Dagahra (I've seen em myself) and thought he could give it an American twist and make some updates and it'd be something of our own. It wouldn't be the first time a non-American idea or creation was adopted by American popular culture and "made our own". Again, it's all speculation at this point, and we could be way off, but sometimes when so many dots connect or make sense, it's compelling enough to at least share with the rest of you.
And hey -if the only reason anyone would have any doubts is because they feel JJ would sooner create something 100% original, then I feel pretty good about the theory.

Thanks everyone! Very Happy

That would have to be A(n) industry's toxic junk to be correct. Since there is no extra "n" in the phrase, "An Industry's Toxic Junk" cannot be right.

True. Then again, the odds of such an anagram being intentional is pretty slim. It would take some real smarts from the marketing people to get that to work out. I think it's a lucky coincidence, but you never know. They can do pretty scary things over there at Bad Robot... Shocked

The odds are slim that they could have intentionally meant for a slogan as offbeat as "You can't drink just six" to mean something else? I don't buy that at all, hehe. While I admit that yes, it could be a coincidence, that's a really crazy coincidence, ya? And, yes -they do some pretty scary things at Bad Robot!! Or at least whatever JJ has his hand in. Haha -just look at the marketing for LOST -to me, that spells potential for mind-blowing stuff.

Course, to your credit -the only reason I disagree is because I'd like to think I'm right in this theory, heh -so if it has nothing to do with it, then you're right - it's a frighteningly insane coincidence.

This is the most convincing out of any of the theories. Also, isn't Rob wearing his "favorite shirt", which I believe has two skeletons praying to a moth, in pics on myspace?

If it's not an 'original' monster, this theory gets my vote.

Other clues:

1. Slusho has a donkey swimming underwater. Could the donkey actually be a horse? Seahorses were considered baby dragons by the Japanese, if I remember correctly.

2. Dagahra lives in water, which supports the tracks on the poster.

3. With how much pollution runs rampant today, it makes sense that Dagahra would be awoken.

The only complaint I have is that people who have never heard of Dagahra are going to think that this is just some cheap Godzilla rip-off.
