Greatings, I thought Id post seeing as I just assembled this all in 3DSMax;

http://www.darkflame.co.uk/temppics/SvSudhtB.jpg

I'm pretty sure I got it assmebled correctly, despite plan6 having one pipe that dosnt quite match. (I think this might be just inaccuracys in the diagram/my allignment, everything else fits)

I also cant location Violets room, so I cant yet backtrace to get the answer.

However, Surely her flat has to be the only 4 story one on
West Caldera Street ?

http://www.perplexcitymap.com/

The one on the corner of Zahir Lane and West Caldera Street ?
Every other place seems to have 5 floors.
Also, that building overlooks a park.

I'll try to post the 3D files in a bit.

Here;
http://www.darkflame.co.uk/temppics/Desktop.zip

3DS, Max and DXF format. (only the max format is tested)
I hope its correct, and people can make use of it.

Allthough I guess a few have solved the puzzle by now.
I couldnt work out what to do once it was assemebled as I couldnt work out any room without both pipes touching it.

I am so glad this this is getting going again! Very Happy

OK, so we deduce that..
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
she lives in the 4-story building on the NW corner of the intersection of West Caldera Street and Zahir Lane.
Then, given that she overlooks the park (figure Zahir Gardens) and has people above and below her, we deduce she must live in flat #6 or flat #10.

Right so far, yeah?

My problem now is ..
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
deciding whether or not Pipe A (as the "other water supply" she refers to) goes through the walls of numbers six or ten. We know from the plans that it doesn't go under the floors of those two flats. It seems kind of ambigious, though, as to how to determine if the pipe is actually "in the wall". The specific section that is bothering me is on plan4 (a cross-section). A section of Pipe A comes up the middle of the building from the basement and ends up on the 4th floor. I can see that the pipe coming along the floor in between 5 and 6 could be discounted, but what about the pipe then going up from there? I guess I'm leaning towards Violet living in #10, as it definitely has less ambigious access to Pipe A then #6 does. Question

Hah, and then I have to deal with the problem of where the leak is coming from. Laughing I got the same order as sixsidedsquare's "more than one point" option, as far as Pipe B's journey through the building. So then,
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
#10 is the only flat with 12 or more flats before it, so I guess that's right. But, and this is where I am feeling dense, how can she be having a leak in her ceiling that's coming from #13? Wouldn't it have to be the flat that is right above her? (Of course, that is #14, which only has water coming from Pipe A.) I don't have experience with leaks - do they travel like that? I mean, a leak from #13 traveling through the floor/ceiling until coming out above #10?

Leaks travel - trust me, I worked in a building with a leaky roof and dodgy plumbing for several years and every time it rained the water found a new place to come through.
Wherever in the floorspace above the water is leaving the pipe, it's going to form a puddle that's going to grow and stream until it finds the lowest point to collect and soak through which may be some distance from the leak.

BTW I thought I'd solved this puzzle really quickly and e-mailed my answer to Violet, and then noticed everyone else had a different solution. Embarassed I'm now mentally slapping myself for not checking my workings before submitting my answer.

EDIT: Oh and I nearly forgot there was one occasion where the waste pipe from our staff toilets somehow leaked into the air-conditioning system - emerging as vile-smelling drips from a celing vent 2 floors down and 10 feet north of the original leak. Fortunately the 'water' had shorted the ac so there was no airflow to convert the drips into a spray...

I'm so sorry that you had to work in those conditions! But, perversely, I'm glad to hear that leaks travel. At least I'm not confused by my answer now. Rolling Eyes

Very well done.

Embarassed And I re-counted the number of times pipe B passes through flat #1, and I missed one. Worse off, if I had kept the room numbers the way I had them I would have had the right number.
Oh well, I had fun.

I resisted the temptation to create a full scale model of the building, though myself and my boyfriend were both very impressed with all the other models we're seeing!

Mostly from staring at the PC map, and then my boyfriend using his excellent spatial awareness, we seem to agree with the mostly posed solution:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Violet lives in flat ten, and the leak is coming from thirteen.

I've also emailed but got the standard alternate reality/sleeping response.

I wondered if there was anything in the 'Housham-era' comment, but I'm finding it hard to find anything about what that refers to, other than a long time ago in PC time. I didn't play season 1, so I feel a little behind... Sorry if that's an irrelevant comment! Smile

ON a side note - has anybody notices that the three pieces on the page (called pink, poker, and save in the source code) are moveable? But where to move them to...nowhere it seems.

Yes, I did notice. I thought they were buttons, you know, like little pin badges. That was my impression of them.

I read on another forum that they don't do anything but move at the moment. Maybe it's just Violet's quirky personality shining through?

Violet updated her blog. The leaking is found and she also gives the solution.
It is just a little extra info she posted, no leads I think.

Quote:
How can I ever thank you enough? The drips... have stopped. I can think again.

Which is good, because there's quite a bit to think about. Not just that juicy mystery I mentioned, but the utter bizarreness of the man whose flat was producing the drips. I'll get back to both of those in a minute.

Kurt has, in fact, worked more of his magnificent mojo and found me proper plans of the building (see below for link). But before he managed to do that I'd already received a host of emails telling me to go have a talk with flat #13, first from Jason R Miller (aka Milkman), and then Ben Harris, Justin Peeples, David Waring, Lizzie Colclough, and on and on. Thank you, all of you, for your aid and support in this trying time for me.

So I went up to the flat you sent me to, #13. Knocked on the door several times. No response. Shouted. No response. Took my boot off and hammered on the door. At last it was opened, by a man dressed in a battered tweed suit, wearing two pairs of glasses at the same time and sporting the most enormous beard I've ever seen. I introduced myself, explained the problem. He blinked at me.

"Yeeeees," he said eventually. "The new supercoolant might produce that effect. I suppose it's possible," he giggled, "it's possible I shouldn't have used it in a residential area."

It was my turn to blink at him.

"Come and see," he said, beckoning.

It turns out that this Gustaffsen has been using supercoolant intended for a new high velocity aircraft to... run his refrigerator. The thing was sitting in the centre of his living room, juddering like a PCAG hopeful hopped up on Ceretin, looking pretty likely to explode at any moment. Fortunately, he was a friendly fruitcake and was quite willing to turn it off to stop the drips. I can't help feeling that I've also prevented a blast which would have taken out most of the Old Town but, as ever, The World Will Never Know.

Gustaffsen's definitely on the more harmless side of eccentric. He insisted I stay for a cup of tea (there were beard hairs floating in it, so I politely 'left it to cool') while he told me about his terrible postal problem. All his parcels are being delayed, he says. Now, everyone always complains about the postal service, and we've all had a parcel take 30-40 minutes more than expected to arrive. But he reckons his parcels have been delayed by up to a day. Which would be, in my experience, unheard-of. I haven't had that problem in this building yet but I'll be watching out for it.

There was an article in the Sentinel about delays in the postal service. My computer is being really slow at the moment, so I'll go hunt it down and edit this later with a link.

Wow, I had completely forgotten about this. Pretty cool to find my name when I went back through the archives. I do find it odd that she bothered to use my entire name, middle initial included. 'Milkman' by itself would have been satisfactory.
