Do we have any rough idea about when this code was used? It might help us narrow the type of coding, seeing as how there was a serious lack of truly complex cyphers and variety of cyphers used a couple hundred or more years ago.

I can't really speak for anyone else.. but I have been operating under the rule of Anything goes..

But if we have to nail down a timeframe.. Present-1000 years ago..

The Journal is a family heirloom... not sure when it was started.. but most of the codes seem to have come from Sophie.. who just passed away a little bit ago..

So ~100 years...

*shrugs*

As a side note.. I am almost 99% positive it is a Vigenere... it's almost standard issue.. Razz Just need the right keyword...

Matron was online earlier!

Brent sent me a text file containing his conversation with her.

Quote:
matronlamia: I found something that might be useful in our archives.
Brentinthetent: Yes?
matronlamia: A page with a Laurel wreath, and the following quote written in the margins:
Brentinthetent: Sounds like hot coals to me.
Brentinthetent: Anyway, where exactly have you been?!
Brentinthetent: I thought the worst happened...
matronlamia: In Delphi.
matronlamia: I have been busy.
Brentinthetent: With this hunt specifically?
matronlamia: With many things.
matronlamia: Now, my day isn't finished yet. I will be in contact with you soon.

Brent was concerned with what else she could be busy with...

But, both of them found pages with the Laurel wreath on it. I asked if she'd sent him the picture, but no. She hasn't sent it. I hope she does, that quote would help immensely, I'm sure.

Looks to me like that was edited...

I guess we wait for that quote.. maybe it will unlock Sophie's Code...

Re: Greek

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It's the word used for Christ in the new testament, though it actually means "annointed one" if you take a more literal translation.

I thought that was IXOYE- that's what's in my fish, anyway.

I was concerned about that, too, never actually asked Brent about it directly.

in other news, Matron is on right now. He's talking to her, he tells me.

edit: After he talked to Matron, he sent me the chat transcript. The beginning is him asking for the coven's help, and she assures him that they're helping. They're going to cast a spell for his father.

Here's the important part.
Quote:
matronlamia: When I was in Delphi, I found many references to Apollo.
matronlamia: I was researching him in our archives, and I found a page which had a picture of his laurel leaves, and notes on that particular myth.
matronlamia: there were notes in the margins, and I remember one of them seeming misplaced, but... I'm not sure if it's relevant.
Brentinthetent: Yes. what were the notes saying?
matronlamia: Most of them were tying him to other gods, but the one that stood out at me... well, one moment.
matronlamia: Let me find it again.
matronlamia: It says... "It burns, but he still sings."
matronlamia: I highly doubt that has anything to do with Apollo, sun god or no.
matronlamia: I'm trying to think of something that involves a man singing as something burns, but I cannot come up with anything pertinent.
Brentinthetent: Nor can I.
matronlamia: Perhaps your friends will have better luck. Somehow, I think this may be a key. This seems to me like a double-sided puzzle.

Double-sided puzzle. Lurker and I think that if we can figure out what "It burns, but he still sings" is referencing, that should be the key for that cipher we can't figure out. Lurker's looking into that right now.

edited again for corrections. Sad

Well, Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Maybe he sang along?

According to a .pdf Lurker found, Nero sang about the destruction of Troy while Rome burned.

in case you wanted to see it.

ok... so it seems we are at an impasse here.. (sorry, jonathan coulton lyric stuck in my head)

but seriously, we are stuck. I cannot find the keyword needed to decode that journal page, and by the lack of posts I have to assume no one else (that posts here) has either.

So we gotta start over and take another look at it.

------------------------

Ok.. here's how it went.

Matron disappeared.. we found out she was in Greece at the Temple of Delphi.

She told Brent to look in Sophie's Journal for anything related to Apollo's Laurel.

Brent finds the journal page of the Laurel Wreath with the code we are stuck on.

(Most of it is in the "ITC Blackadder" font... with the last word in Greek.)

ok.. so we are stuck on that code... and Brent talks to Matron. Matron searched the Coven's Archives, and found a similar page with a Laurel Wreath.
Quote:
matronlamia: I was researching him in our archives, and I found a page which had a picture of his laurel leaves, and notes on that particular myth.
matronlamia: there were notes in the margins, and I remember one of them seeming misplaced, but... I'm not sure if it's relevant.

matronlamia: Perhaps your friends will have better luck. Somehow, I think this may be a key. This seems to me like a double-sided puzzle.

I bolded the stuff I thought were the major clues.

Ok... so we looked for some guy that sang while something burned.. and as Archaic pointed out.. Nero Sang While Rome Burned.

So we started attacking the code based on all sorts of keywords related to Apollo, Laurel, Nero, Rome, Troy, etc etc..

No Luck Whatsoever.

the last line of the code end with the greek word Xpiotos(yeah, I know that's not exactly it.. but work with me..) That word translates to
Christ.

So now we have a connection to Christ, Christianity, Jesus...
we also know Nero was very cruel to Christians.

ok.. So what does that all mean? What is the &*%% keyword?? lol

(sorry for my rant.. hopefully that made some sort of sense and helps put some of the info together in one place)

Anything I missed?

Maybe his bloodline had something to do with the Christians during Nero's reign?

Have we found out the code under the wreath? I pointed out it looks Greek.

Okay, maybe we're barking up the wrong burning city. What about "The Night Chicago Died?" lol Forgive me. I'm frustrated.

But seriously, are we 100% it's a reference to Nero? If we're in Greece at Delphi, why not Athens or Cypress or summat? Since I'm at work, I'll work the Google machine.

EDIT: Okay, yeah, nothing else burned significantly. Some things that DON'T work in Vigenere- Nero, Claudius, Caesar, Augustus, Germanicus, Lucius, Domitus, Ahenobarbus, Drusus (all names of Nero), Sack of Ilium (the song it's reported he sang), Rome, or coin (double-sided puzzle?). I also tried Tiberius because I'm a Trekkie. Smile

I dug up that Rome burned July 18, 64 (adjusted to Gregorian calendar). In case it's important.

Edited to add keyword rejects.

Perhaps this refers to Janus? Wikipedia says he was "the god of gates, doors, doorways, beginnings, and endings". He was "usually depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions" and was "usually shown with a key".

Nero seems to have introduced coins depicting the Temple of Janus - I found a page about them here.

I suspect my Janus idea is wrong - the jump from Greek stuff to Roman seems a bit odd. But it might lead to something!

I'm familiar with Janus. I just tried Janus as a key, and it didn't work either. I'm going to try all of the above again, plus Janus, in keyword instead of vigenere and see what I get. After that, folks, I'm out of ideas.

EDIT: none of them work as a keyword cipher.

Have we EVER had a clue unsolved so long? Where are Rogi and Smooth?? I think we'll need ALL our heads to brain this one.

On a side note, Smooth's stepfather passed on the 19th. That's probably where he's been. I'm sure you all join me in offering condolence, prayer/happythought/warmfuzzy, and understanding to him and his family.

Hi Guys. been following, or lurking, this thread for awhile. Is it possible that we are looking for "someone singing while they are burned"? In an early convo Brent makes the comment "Whoa sounds like hot coals stuff to me" Later we get "It burns, but still he sings" " A double sided puzzle" and the Greek word for Jesus. Well double sided could mean opposite, and the opposite of Jesus is Lucifer. Lucifer is the morning star in Roman myths as well as in Hebrew. The Muslim believed him to be made of flame, and if I remember right he was also the leader of the Heavenly choir. The only tie in I can find to Apollo though, would be the Laurel Wreath, as Lucifer is also known as The Prince Of Darkness, Lord Of Lies etc. That and the Morning Star was the last to leave the sky before the Sun God arrived. Just a thought.

Good thought, but no dice. Lucifer, morningstar, devil, and satan don't work, either in vigenere or keyword.

Oh, no... That's terrible to hear, even if you only know someone through the internet. :/

Well, let's hope that we can get this figured out quick so we don't have to burden him with it when he gets home.

I was speaking to Brent today (As I usually do from the seven o'clock to eight o'clock hour) and this interesting tidbit was presented.

Quote:
PainfulEuphemism (7:13:13 PM): Yeah, but when we're stumped like this, it has to be something staring us right in the face we're missing.
Brentinthetent (7:17:01 PM): Eliminate all other factors, and the one which remains must be the truth.
Brentinthetent (7:17:08 PM): When all else fails, go sherlock.
PainfulEuphemism (7:19:24 PM): Exactly!
Brentinthetent (7:22:07 PM): It says do not limit yourself to one solution or what you think is.
Brentinthetent (7:22:10 PM): Search everything.
PainfulEuphemism (7:23:18 PM): Well, the laurel hint points towards that time period... but maybe there's another link we're missing.
PainfulEuphemism (7:23:19 PM): overlooking.
Brentinthetent (7:24:08 PM): I don't think that exactly.
Brentinthetent (7:24:27 PM): I think we're on the right path, Nero singing fits in with the greek stuff in the other clues.
Brentinthetent (7:24:36 PM): Just solving this fucked up code.
