[QUESTION] How would you fix the Golden Jigsaw contest?

Something thebruce posted caught my attention. I've been very harsh in my attitude towards this contest. TheBruce points out that we all might be better served by giving some thought as to how to fix the problems in the game.

So, here is the question: how would you fix it?

Your assets are a 1,000 pieces of a very pretty puzzle, a knack for anagrams and an existing player base with an official forum for them to play. You also have very flexible rules which you can amend at any time. You've offered a 1,000,000 prize but you've covered your bases by a provision that let's you award 1/2 of the total money raised.

The amount of money you've spent is unknown and the cost to keep running it is unknown. (make an assumption that you will cover your costs for the sake of this problem.)

The problem is that you've only sold 66 pieces.

You need to come up with a solution that will help you sell pieces, and keep the game going. You need to be able to attract new players while keeping the existing ones.

How would you redesign the game to make this work?

Ideas?

One word (Or maybe it's two):

Leaderboards

(One for the players and one for the sponsors.)

The pieces are over-priced for, what for most companies, will be an untried method of advertising. If there was a noticeable increase in traffic to the websites you would expect advertisers to be back buying more pieces from later rows in order to keep the attention up. This is obviously not happening yet as just the cheapest ones have sold.

Maybe despoiler.org should buy a piece Twisted Evil

I haven't exactly played the game...but here is something:

1) Spam. If you adverstie to a million people, 1,000 pieces will be bought. Simple.

2) Offer packages of pieces. (Buy 4 pieces, get 1 free!)

3) A great and addicting storyline might work...

4) Have puzzles that need other puzzles to solve them. For example, you have a puzzle card that states a very mysterious code. Of course, 3 other puzzle cards, when decoded, allows for the answer of said mysterious code...so once you solve the 3 puzzles, you can solve the fourth one.

5) Place ads on the back of the Puzzle Card. Get adversiters to say, "Hey, I can get my company on the back of a Puzzle Card and become famous!"...OR..."Hey, I can become famous by having my company being associated, nay, having something to do with the Puzzle!" The ad reveune should help out. How do you get adverstiers to accept such an awesome scheme? Look back at #1, Spam.

They've implemented a fix of sorts. Go see the game thread in News & Rumors.
