*SPEC* The numeral 1 seems to appear quite a lot. This makes me wonder if we need to read some of them as double digit numbers, e.g. 11

51 89 11 18 54 12 84 06 75 11 85 91
35 11 85 93 02 11 57 14 13 11 25 49
98 11 66 11 45 11 81 11 27 14 31 11
77 11 22 85 43 11 87 93 34 10 03 12
41 91 71 11 56 44 11 01 20 63 17 17

(I don't know what to do with it yet, but posted it for reference)

I'm not sure if it helps, but here are some of the number frequencies...

2-digit
Item "11" has count 24
Item "85" has count 4
Item "91" has count 4
Item "17" has count 3
Item "14" has count 3
...etc...

3-digit
Item "311" has count 3
Item "185" has count 2
Item "211" has count 2
Item "113" has count 2
Item "111" has count 2
...etc...

Looking at them as 2-digit numbers shows thirteen numbers that occur more than once (11, 85, 91, 17, 14, 12, 93, 28, 27, 23, 21, 18, 10) and 39 that only occur once (24% repeat). Looking at them as 3-digit numbers shows six that occur more than once (311, 185, 211, 113, 111, 110) and 50 that only show up once (10%).

It does look like 2-digit combinations are pretty likely, but I'm not sure I would discount the 3-digit combos either. The fact that 11 jumps out above the others in 2-digit combos is kind of odd. It makes me think that it is perhaps some kind of delimiter? Also the number distribution seems a little wide--ranging from 01 at the lowest and 98 the highest.

One question: did the character count, begin content and end content phrases appear in the file, or are they output from jpseek? I cannot seem to get jphide/jpseek to compile, as they have Intel-specific assembly code.

No I'm responsible of that part (begin /end count)

One number appeals me: 52 = 2*26
is it likely that two symbols code the same letter
for example : 45 ->A and 86 -> A ?
seems rather complicated to me, but who knows ?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
lots of 1s in the code.... all digits other than the 1s represent 0s which gives

0011001100110111101100000011001000110100001001110011001000110
1000010001001001110001000000011000100110000001100101011000000
1100110011011100100111001100000011000000100010010101110000110
100001010

that's binary for 37°24'24"N 102°37'00"W, which are the coordinates to Springfield, Colorado which led me to
http://www.peterjmags.com/puzzles/springfield.htm

On that page is the question: What state do the Simpsons live in? (ha ha ha... ha...)
and in the sources is:
<!--Don't worry, I don't expect anyone to know this (no one really does)... Just guess, or give a convincing argument as to what you think it is...-->

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I always thought that Springfield isn't really anywhere in particular. Kinda like an Anytown, USA.
Found lots of info here though: http://www.snpp.com/guides/springfield.list.html

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
in case anyone is wondering, the pic puzzle2.jpg is from here:
http://home.wanadoo.nl/~schoelink/sunset%20tree.jpg
and here: http://home.wanadoo.nl/~schoelink/diary.htm
it was taken somewhere in a desert in Sudan, near its border with Ethiopia

Wow, grumpyboy's in with the breakaway win! Good job, grumpy.

I'll have puzzle #3 up soon (and since everyone was considerate enough to put their progress in spoiler tags, other people can try to solve this one as well Smile)

EDIT: Oh yeah, grumpyboy, how did you figure out where I got the picture from?

And yet again, this proves the unforum addage: if there is a puzzle to solve, go to bed and when you wake up, grumpyboy will have solved it.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I was just wondering if you had some sort of really cool picture searching/matching software that you used Smile.
